Question about J.J. Walters

#1 Post by ZelenskyTheValiant (Ivan) »

So who is J.J. Walters and what happened to him?

It appears he was the creator of this wonderful oasis that we all love to frequent. :D But why did he disappear? Does he ever drop by for a visit?

A few years ago JJ passed the site over to Doc Ibold, who later passed it on to me. Things had gotten pretty busy for JJ and he didn't have the ability to keep up with the site. I am still in contact with him from time to time, we last exchanged messages a couple of months ago, he is doing well and sounds happy. He checks in occasionally, the last time was the fall of last year.

James is super cool. He basically created everything. He used to be really active but that faded, along with the participation on many. There's only so many times some people can watch our old favourite before it's too much. The enthusiasm in the early years (in the wake of the DVD releases) was something to behold, however.

JJ’s a good guy. His passion for the show gave us all of this. The enthusiasm was definitely much higher in the past. I agree that many members have come and gone, many making great contributions, but interest wanes. Certain events have led to increases in participation more recently, but sadly I think, they have been fairly negative. The razing of the estate and many members response to the reboot are two topics that come to mind. I also remember a lot of posts when Rick Romer was posting on his blog. That’s been a long time now!

Hi S.B.,
You are so right about reaching a point of diminishing returns with rerun watching. After Hallmark channel got the rights and butchered plot points lest they offend some 6 year old watching,
I have watched maybe two episodes. I will wait a few years before taking up Magnum again, just like the Andy Griffith Show. You become too familiar with an episode, all the magic is gone.
I haven't watched the immortal Maltese Falcon in a good decade because I knew all the lines, they just became quotes to me and the dialog no longer had any effect.
I still enjoy Magnum Mania, as many of the posters have interesting takes on all sorts of things besides Magnum, such as Little Garwood's insights on other series.
By the way, THE classic example cited in media classes of a network running a TV series into the ground is the Odd Couple. When it went off the air as a middling success, channel 11 WPIX
in NYC started running it every day and it became a huge hit, generating more press in the local papers than when it was first run. After awhile it was aired 5 times a day, reaping ad
dollars and ratings. I remember going to my brother's Rutgers frat party and the band played the "Oscar" song from the series,"once there was a man named Oscar" and most every
one knew the words. Two years later the ratings tanked, people were sick of it and it never regained it's mojo again.
Magnum PI is an evergreen, still being watched after 40 years. New fans yet to be born will discover Magnum Mania in the future and will be thanking then elder statesmen Conch and Styles
for keeping the joint running.

I regularly watch Magnum, PI on DVD with my two teenagers. Yes, teenagers. I introduced them to the original when they were in middle school. We had "Magnum Mondays" for several months. It was a family event. We started with "Don't Eat the Snow" and went through the entire eight seasons in order. Now, we regularly watch different episodes. Just last night, we watched "The Eighth Part of the Village." So for us, Magnum, PI is still relevant and fresh. My 17-year-old son loves wearing rugby shirts and asked for a Team Ring in place of a high school class ring. How's that for a new generation of fans?

Best,

Thanks guys! Appreciate the input on our elusive friend J.J. or James. He certainly made a great contribution here!

I can imagine this place was buzzing when the DVDs started coming out in the mid 2000s. It looks like the site launched in 2006? Going by the date on the bottom of the main page. But I could have sworn I stumbled on this site a few years before the DVDs came out. Maybe as early as 2000 or 2001? Or am I way off? I was active on Mike Quigley's Hawaii Five-O site at the time and I could have sworn I stumbled on this site around the same time as well. I wasn't even a Magnum fan at the time but remember thinking this site looked cool, with each episode having its own page and screencaps.

Anyone remember when this site first appeared? Who was here from the beginning?

James joined the forum on Tue Jan 02, 2007 at 4:54 pm (according to his profile). So we can safely assume that was the launch date for the forum. The website may have been earlier, but I'm not sure. I didn't find it until 2008 and then finally joined in 2009. There was a big group of active people already here at the time, including JJ, IKnowWhatYoureThinking, Steve, Doc Ibold, N1095A, Sam, ConchRepublican, golfmobile, SelleckLover, and rubber chicken. I guess that makes Conch and Sam the true survivors!

Like Styles, I was a lurker in 2008, but didn’t join until 2009. I enjoyed the website as much as the forum early on. That summer of 09 I decided to resurrect my Pahonu floor plan project and created a 3D model. By the end of summer I had done everything I could on the model, but had lots of missing elements. So I joined the forum and asked if anyone could help. Wow, did I get a lot of help! :D. JJ was so encouraging and excited about my model, as were many other members who provided me a flood of information over the years.

I joined in 2011 but was aware of the site long before that. I see that the forum starts in 2007 but I guess that doesn't mean the website was created then. I guess I'm not mistaken in that I visited this site long before 2006 or 2007. I'm guessing the site existed earlier but without the forum.

I also don't see guys like MaiTaiMan and Jay-Firestorm (who I believe had his own A-TEAM site). Those 2 reviewed every episode I believe. Always saw their names as I went through each episode.

Styles,
It looks to me you just about nailed the original company of ring bearers (as in Magnum's team ring) but what about Braddah Kimo, the Sauron of the bunch? Sure he still lurks in the shadows, ready
to strike back from his exile on Mount Doom in Mordor, but wasn't he one of the originals? Credit where credit is due.

No. He just popped up one day and then disappeared, from my recollection. Grating arrogance, but quite a character.

And then there was MACattack, the guy who seemed to only post about weed. Funny guy. He was obsessed with the pot growers they stumble upon in Ugliest Dog. ;-)

Yeah, Kimo was a character, but not an early member. I forgot all about MACattack! You know who else was an early member: 308GTS. I remember clearly because he started the now ginormous estate thread in 2007 but was never a big poster. He has been around in the last year though, I think. I didn’t post much in the first couple of years myself but that’s changed a bit!

Yes! Another Hall of Famer!

Yep, Braddah Kimo was a trouble-maker. He liked to start trouble over on the Five-O forum too. Argued with everybody and nitpicked everything everybody said, giving himself off as the ultimate authority on everything Hawaiian. Basically he was right on everything and everybody else was just a stupid haole. But apparently he wasn't even Hawaiian. Just another "haole". Go figure...
