Ask a kid what this is. Guaranteed you’ll stump them!
I'm guessing a kid might know what this is. According to Biden, kids should turn on their record players at night before going to bed. So if kids today still listen to record players I'm sure they also listen to reel-to-reel tapes.
Hold on now. Vinyl records have made a big comeback lately so the President was not wrong in what he said. It’s funny, I remember when CD’s first came out. They were supposed to sound better than vinyl. Now I hear that vinyl has a better sound than CD’s. What gives?
I still have lots of old vinyl LP’s from the 80’s and earlier so during the pandemic I decided to look for a turntable. I got one hooked up and listened to some of my albums for the first time in about 25 years! I’m not an audiophile but I’ve read a bit. I think the argument that many make is that vinyl has more nuance and subtleties of sound than CD’s had the capacity for recording digitally. They say that vinyl without any damage has this quality missing in digital.
That said, I can’t comment because I was listing to old albums with scratches that hissed and popped in places. I can’t make the comparison then, but would be interested in whether I could hear any differences. It’s also important to remember that with any analog method, there is degradation from simply playing it because of the physical contact required by the needle, or tape head as may be the case. Flawless new vinyl recordings MIGHT? be better but they can’t be kept that way unless they’re rarely played.

Love the Wo Fat episodes.
Felt a lull in this episode and I thought hmm, what am I gonna say to Ivan.
Scene from Tom Wong being brought in until the end made up for it though.
Ending was great. MCGarrett’s righteous indignation.
MPI: Bunch of the regular crew and sited Joe Moore (I’m a fan growing up going to Hawaii every year and watching the news there).
I'm honestly not one of the biggest fans of the Wo Fat episodes in general. I do think the pilot episode "Cocoon" was great and I also love both the season 3 opener "...And a Time to Die" and the season 9 opener "Nine Dragons" but the rest of the Wo Fat episodes are of varying quality for me. I prefer many of the other interesting villains that we saw on the show. Wo Fat was a good villain but give me the likes of Big Chicken or Lewis Avery Filer or the Vashons or Hookman any day.
Now, this episode I must admit I've warmed up to quite a bit over the years. As you say, especially the second half is VERY good. And that ending where McGarrett gets into a heated argument with Jonathan Kaye, culminating with him slamming Fat's passport on his desk followed by a freeze-frame is an absolute classic! But there was a time when I found this episode pretty boring. I know, I'm ashamed. I should probably climb into my own bamboo cage.
Joe Moore was in so many episodes of Five-O, even in some fairly prominent roles later in the series. Heh, I think he was the one I watched on YouTube when news broke of Robin's Nest being demolished. I think he covered that story. Or maybe it was the story of Robin's Nest being sold and the connection to Obama.
So funny how I’m an Ivan pleaser.
I try to think if I say an episode is good will he say I should have said great.
If I say an episode stinks will he throw me in the bamboo cage.
Yes, beginning was good. I agree, middle was weak, last 10 minutes was great.
And I should have clarified. I love Wo Fat. Shouldn’t have necessarily said the Wo Fat episodes.
Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.
It's important to please Ivan and to respect his bamboo cage.
Both Wo Fat and his episodes are on equal footing to me. Perhaps if I thought Wo Fat was SUPER great then the episodes would have fared better as well. As it is, they are often hit-and-miss. For instance I always have trouble getting through "F.O.B. Honolulu". It's a solid story but I just struggle with the length of it. Maybe it shouldn't have been a 2-parter. "The Ninety Second War" (part 2) I also struggle with, especially since it's so disconnected from part 1 and pretty boring to boot.

Liked this episode.
Good setup in the beginning. Good ruse for the kidnapping.
Didn’t count on bulletproof Michael Conrad (Hill Street Blues) or background noises, eh?
Realized this episode I miss Kono. Thought of that for some reason.
MPI: Clu Gulager from Way of the Slaking Horse (one of my favourites).
Clu Gulager must be in another episode because I remember him in another episode about a big bank heist. He’s been in so many things, including a really good Streets of San Francisco episode called Poisoned Snow. It seems like he was in every 60’s-80’s TV drama there was.

Yep, good episode! Better than "Jinn" before it. Good guest stars in Clu Gulager and Michael Conrad. Really liked the parallel heists going on. Nice intricate plot! "Watch the birdie".

Clu (apparently he was named after clu-clu birds - whatever they are - when he was a kid) did guest star again in season 9, again as a heavy, in "Assault on the Palace" where he masterminded a bank heist during the King Kamehameha Day parade. That was another good one!
Yes, "Poisoned Snow" was a pretty strong SOSF ep. High body count in that one. Loved the twist with his kid (Mark Hamill) at the end, although you could see that was coming.

Now I remember more clearly! The King Kam Parade was the diversion for the heist. I enjoyed that one.
The premise of Poisoned Snow is interesting to me: the narcotics cop so jaded that he acts out under the tragic assumption that the world of addiction is only in his work life, not his personal life.

Yep that's the tragedy of the episode. I do wish that they weren't so obvious and heavy-handed with Mark Hamill sniffling and wiping his nose all the time and his dad keeps on telling him to do something about that cold of his. I mean you know right there that's no cold, the kid is sniffing something. You know that twist is coming. But it's not much of a twist or a shock - not for us anyway.

Way of the Slaking Horse? LOL!
Haha.
Yes. The way of the slacking horse. lol
The lazy hitman who procrastinates on his pre-hit homework. Smokes weed, gets directions wrong and is always late for his hits.
I gotta start proof reading my posts.

Doesn't "slaking" mean quenching your thirst? The hitman who is always thirsty and needs a drink in order to complete his assignment. TM just needs to shoot the bottle out of his hand and all is good.

I just read it quickly as sla[c]king. It was early before my first coffee.
Now I'm in really deep.
Need to pay better attention.
Can't believe I'm taking English lessons from a Russian torturer. A new low point in my life.

Good connect the dots episode with an interesting topic especially for the time.
Was a bit silly the secretary willingly signing the name at the end though.
Otherwise it was good.
Great seeing Starbuck/Face Dirk Benedict.
MPI: Ray Buktenica (Ice Pick's accountant).
Yep, good episode overall. Topical. We get Dirk Benedict from THE A-TEAM (who really got beaten to a bloody pulp by the dead girl's father) and Mary Frann from NEWHART as the real culprit. Not much else to say about this one I don't think. The next one is excellent - one of my favorite's of the season! So be careful...
