Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

Kee, "Pray Love Remember" is a very good episode. The great part comes at the end with the interrogation of the mentally-challenged Benny Apa. Ron Feinberg was excellent in the part and the revelation as to why he was lying all through the interrogation comes as quite a shock! "I don't got no driving license, mister". Great ending! He and his pet rooster ("Choo-choo" was it?) were great together!

Yes it was. I can remember the first time I saw this episode and how it hit you right at the end as to why he lied. 'I run some and I walk some.' That was something McGarrett could not believe. Ron Feinberg did say this was one of his most enjoyable roles. And you were right, the rooster was named Choo-Choo.

"I run some... and... and I walk. I'm... I'm... fast. Fast." That was some great stuff! McGarrett was rightly dumbfounded how someone could run and walk to Pearl City in such a short time (was it 20 minutes?). But Benny kept insisting that he was "fast... fast". McGarrett says "No one is that fast, Benny." I could watch those last 15 minutes over and over!!

There was an article somewhere about an interview with Ron Feinberg where he talks about how Leonard Freeman wanted him to play this role, or rather not play it. He says that Freeman told him that he doesn't want Lennie from OF MICE AND MEN. In other words he didn't want the cliched version of a mentally-challenged person. In any case Freeman was very happy with Feinberg's performance and later told him "That's what I wanted".

No, "A Matter of Mutual Concern" is not better than "No Bottles..." (be careful) but I do like it a lot. I like the infighting between the 4 crime families but I especially love the dialogue all throughout. The racial zingers are fantastic! Very not PC and that's what I love about it. Mike Quigley on his site calls the episode a Race-o-Rama and that's what makes it memorable! Manu Tupou (as the Samoan Tasi) is a hoot, saying he won't let the hands of a powdery Chinaman (Chin Ho) touch him! He also calls the Korean mobster a "gook" and Seth Sakai a "Jap". Then McGarrett puts him in his place, saying "Repeat after me - Chinese, Korean, Japanese". I always get a kick out of this episode!

I also really love the finale at the War Natatorium between the old man and the young Korean, as they barter over the remains of the criminal empire (with the other 2 mobsters out of play). They barter down to a nickel I think and the Korean says "I wouldn't pay you half a cent" or something like that. Anyway, the put-downs and insults that the Korean throws at the old man as he tries to barter with him are priceless! He keeps calling him "pop" and "old man". After the old man says he doesn't have a match to light up the Korean's cigarette the latter says "Man don't got a match but he wants me to pay him...". Something like that. Anyway great stuff! The zingers make this episode! The hit man at the airport who is sent back home packing tells our guys to "Ram it!" before he departs. I don't even know if it makes sense but it makes me chuckle. The man who wrote this one (Alvin Sapinsley) wrote the classic 3-parter Vashon trilogy in season 5.

T.Q. where did you get those pics of the HNL airport seats? From the episode? I know I sat in them but honestly can't remember what they looked like.

I definitely like "Is This Any Way to Run a Paradise?" more than "Nine, Ten, You're Dead".

The former has a cool environmentalist aspect to it and how far this individual will go to keep the island "clean". But there's a good mystery there because for a good half of the episode we have no idea who this "concerned" individual is. I like the messages he leaves behind - dumping trash, sealing up a smoke stack, but then it escalates to shooting down a crop duster, and eventually murder. Nephi Hannemann plays the culprit and he would be seen in many more episodes. He was probably on MPI too. He was a local actor and the brother of Honolulu's former mayor Mufi Hannemann.

The latter episode isn't as interesting story-wise for me (not a boxing fan, well except ROCKY lol) but what stands out there are the guest performances. Moses Gunn as the mentally damaged boxer Willy gave a very strong performance and Albert Paulsen as the mobster Matty Edmonds is always a thrill to watch. His blustering anger and smug demeanor is always a hoot! His performance here was very similar to his Charley Bombay mobster in "Just Lucky, I Guess" in season 2. But the best part of the episode was of course the twist at the end. Did NOT see that coming!!

Family has a time share in Maui and when I was a kid there were no direct flights and we always went through Oahu. So been there a million times. Enough to recognize the seats haven't changed (or a lot of the airport actually).

Looked up Nephi Hannemann and no MPI credits.

Yes, Moses Gunn was good in that episode.
