I came here looking if anyone else thought the same, but haven't seen anything. Do you think it was just a result of his drinking and past events, or could our detective have been smoking up some devil's lettuce?
It doesn’t really fit with his character in my view. I think the implication is that he’s on a mega-bender with little to no sleep for many days. In the first season episode The Ugliest Dog in Hawaii he takes the time to remember the location of a marijuana patch to report it to the authorities. That says something about the character’s view on the topic, I think.
I agree with this assessment. That was precisely my interpretation when I watched this scene.

Any ideas how Selleck got his eyes to be that red? He can't be THAT good an actor. LOL! Was he rubbing them hard for hours and trying to squeeze every tear out in order to achieve that effect? Or are there eye drops that can create that redness? Just wondering. It's very believable. Gotta give 'em some props!

I can't believe I never noticed the alternate theme song until this viewing. I have gone through the series at least 4 times before this one, and I never noticed it until today. I wasn't really sure until I started episode 5.4 and heard the regular theme song -- then I went back to 5.3 and listened to the theme song again -- then I came here and saw the chatter about it. Still can't believe I missed it all those times. My only guess is that I skipped the intro in previous viewings -- I definitely would have caught this before.

Yes, it's very noticeable. I'm watching season 5 for the very first time and it immediately jumped out at me as being very different. Apparently there were some subtle differences between the season 1, 2, and 3 opening themes but I can barely notice the differences they are so minor. But this one was a big change!

First post, but I use the site all the time for MPI trivia.

Though, like many of you, I've seen this episode a hundred times over the years, I noticed something new today that I had never spotted before. Not sure if it's been discussed, I didn't see it on the episode summary. I guess it would be considered a "flub."

After Magnum catches up with Father Jim/not-Mac when the latter comes to pick up his watch, Magnum drags him around the corner to the Ferrari. When Magnum is saying, "...no more bull! I want answers!" there is the shadow of a boom microphone on the ground in front of and to the left of the Ferrari.

It's as plain as day, but I had never noticed it before today. I know I'll never "not" see it again.

Anyway, happy to be here and glad to maybe be able to contribute something to the fandom, for all that it's given me.
I looked at this scene and could not see the boom mic. Let me know a time-stamp if I'm missing it. We're you watching on TV, or DVD? My video comes from the full-series box set of DVDs that came out in 2013 (after they had released each season individually from 2004-2008). I have both sets, of course! Perhaps they did some cleaning up either before the initial DVD release or between releasing the individual seasons and the box set.

It's right there in the video you posted. Next to the Ferrari on the ground to the left of Mac. Can't miss it. :) You can even see its shadow on the ground moving as Mag drags Mac to the Ferrari.

But I don't know if these things are real flubs or not. Visible boom mic's and shadows of equipment or crew are seen all too often in these shows from the 80s. Seen so many of them over the years.

Doh! You are correct. I didn't read the post closely enough. I read "boom mic" and immediately began looking for something overhead/along the top of the screen. My bad. And I get irritated when it's clear people haven't read my text messages closely enough! #hypocrite

Good point about the question of whether it rises to the level of "flub". If nobody spotted it while they were shooting the scene (did they have monitors back then?), it was surely cost prohibitive to go back and re-shoot the scene. So it's more of a "technical error". I guess one could limit "flubs" to larger continuity errors or plot holes.
