Season 2 Episode 2 Mike & Pat

#31 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Season 2 Episode 2 Mike & Pat

This is one I vividly remember, especially the remote control boat with dynamite that Marlowe sniffs out before detonation. Good story with stealing a dolphin to do aquatic drug work.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 1 Charles Napier (singer and driver of the Winnebago!)
Key Supporting Characters: 3 Janet (she's a county prosecutor now), Myron, Cecilia
Contacts: 1 Gary (Exotic Animal Dealer)
Rick's Hats: 1 (regular banded cowboy, a little different)
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 1 Rick as sailor
Gadgets: 0 (I only count the Simon gadgets, but the remote control dynamite boat was great)
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 0
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers' Squabbles: 0
Total: 7

To me Charles Napier will always be the slimy Murdock in RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II.

One of my favorite scenes in the film has Rambo tightly clenching the microphone speaker in his hand (while his muscles are bulging and glistening with sweat and the thunder/lightning are flashing outside) and growling into the mic "I'm coming for you, Murdock..." Dang, I still get chills. :o And of course the climax at the army base where Rambo confronts Murdock and sticks his knife into the desk mere inches from Murdock's head and says "Mission accomplished". They sure don't make 'em like they used to. :)

Season 2 Episode 3 Guessing Game

#34 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

This is the mandatory psychic episode (I'm sure they'll probably have another one over the next six seasons). That said, it's a decent episode. The actress that plays Carol from Magnum is the psychic. We see Janet settled in as a prosecuting attorney and Myron is now retired (and working freelance for the Simons). I think I liked it better when Myron and Janet had the nearby competing agency, but I guess they didn't want to continue that direction (and Janet and Myron will soon mainly disappear from the show). A.J. shoots the killer at the end of the episode. I believe it is the first time one of the Simons successfully shoots someone on screen.

Famous Guest Stars: 1 Kathleen Lloyd (played Carol from Magnum)
Key Supporting Characters: 3 Janet, Myron, Cecilia
Contacts: 0
Rick's Hats: 1
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 0
Gadgets: 0
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 2 psychic's ex-husband stages a shooting by blowing out her window with rifle fire, Simons v serial killer
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0.5 (AJ shoots killer in the shoulder at the end, not clear if the wound is fatal)
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon Mexico Trips: 0
Brothers' Squabbles: 0
Total: 7.5

Season 2 Episode 4 Art for Arthur's Sake

A big cast of guest characters in this one. Some fun scenes with Rick in this one grabbing the mic and taking over negotiations with the art thieves and his experiences at a punk rock bar.

Famous Guest Stars: 1 Jake (Body by Jake) Steinfeld (plus a bunch of TV/film actors)
Key Supporting Characters: 1 Myron
Contacts: 1 Lester (mechanic)
Rick's Hats: 1
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 2 Rick fisherman, A.J. wearing pink wig and pancho
Gadgets: 1 (homing devices)
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 1 fired on by art thief at shipyard
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon Mexico Trips: 0
Brothers' Squabbles: 1 (A.J. wants Rick to get his boat out of his yard)

This is totally random, but related. Yesterday morning after reading your review, I drove past a red Camaro Z28 on the freeway like the one from the show! It was a T-top too, although it was closed up because of the rain. Don’t see many around anymore, but there it was.

Maybe Rick and AJ are in trouble again!

I think season 2 is where the show really found its footing. In fact I would say that seasons 2 and 3 are probably tied for being my favorite seasons of the show (and that's keeping in mind that Tim Reid as Downtown Brown, who I really like, doesn't even join the show until season 3). That's how strong I think season 2 is overall. The few episodes of season 1 that I had seen some years back didn't really impress me at all, with the exception of maybe "Trapdoors". But season 2 really turned things around. I don't think it was just the move to the Thursday night time-slot to follow Magnum (which certainly did help) but a visible improvement in the stories being told. Speaking of "Guessing Game" I'm not the biggest fan of psychic episodes but this one in particular is my favorite episode from season 2 and one of my favorites of the entire series. It's a pretty dark episode for so early in the show's run and the serial killer angle actually feels like it belongs more on an episode of Five-O than S&S but it really works here and really adds to the creepy mystery feel. Love it!

Some other favorites from season 2:

The Ten Thousand Dollar Deductible
Sometimes Dreams Come True
The Last Time I Saw Michael
Thin Air
Murder Between the Lines
The Club Murder Vacation
The List

A.J. touts the Simon's Courier service as never having failed in delivering a shipment -- trouble is this diamond delivery is there first one. Things go bad on the plane and in a plot inspired by DB Cooper, A.J. loses the diamonds at gunpoint, is blindfolded, and tagged by some masked parachuters. The Simons are up against their clients, the robbers, and a cutthroat insurance company in this one. Nice twist to the plot, too.

Contacts: 1 "Priest" a jewelry fence
Rick's Hats: 1

Season 2 Episode 7 Sometimes Dreams Come True

#43 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Good episode with good performances by guest stars -- an identical twin of an in-trouble stewardess and a creepy stalker. Janet finally asks and gets a favor. Myron ends up hit in the head working for the Simons for $30. Great final scene with the Simons crashing in to the rescue through a sky light.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 2 Lisa Eilbacher (again) and Johathan Banks (Wiseguy, etc., etc.)
Contacts: 0.5 (the sketch artist is probably Janet's contact, so I'll give it a 0.5)
Key Supporting Characters: 3 Janet, MyroGary (Exotic Animal Dealer)
Rick's Hats: 2 (camo cap + regular)
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 1 (A.J. officer of the court)

Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers' Squabbles: 1 (Rick's insomnia)

Key Supporting Characters: 3 Cecilia, Myron Janet
Contacts: 0 (I'm not going to count the handwriting expert Siggy, as he was Janet's contact)
