Pretty sure Ivan’s just provoking you for a laugh, Pahonu. This old mocking guys for liking things that aren’t macho enough is an anachronism. That was part of the humour of TC liking ballet, of course. Even in 1981 that old John Wayne stuff was becoming laughable.

Relax. No need for a long spiel. It's just a joke.Pahonu wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 12:29 amQuite the simplistic stereo type there Ivan. You seem easily surprised that people like all kinds of things that you don’t like or understand. The great singer and actor Paul Robeson performed as Othello in London and in early Hollywood musicals such as Showboat, for which his rendition of Old Man River became renowned worldwide. He was also an All-American football player from Rutgers and received a law degree from Columbia. Pay Gasol is an opera fan, David Beckham enjoys the symphony, and former Oiler’s tackle Lawrence Harris actually sang opera! I’m not comparing myself in any way to these incredible talents, but your assumption that an athlete who enjoys music of any type is bizarre, is simply narrow-minded. Also, whatever that truly bizarre Tarzan/Jane quip means is beyond me unless you believe only women enjoy opera or perform in it. Why not try to learn about different things rather that criticize them with poor jokes because you’re unfamiliar?IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 4:06 pmBig burly guy like yourself is into opera?????Pahonu wrote: ↑Sat Dec 18, 2021 1:21 amI don’t find it bizarre at all that a character might have widely varied interests rather than being narrow minded or dismissive of unfamiliar things. I’m a 6-8 former college basketball player and high school coach who was introduced to opera long ago by my wife. We have attended many over the last 25+ years and I have come to enjoy live performances very much. Because of her French ancestry, she also introduced me to French opera (and wineIvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Fri Dec 17, 2021 7:36 pm It's probably my least favorite episode of the season (no wait, that would be "One More Summer"). Andrea Marcovicci is EXTREMELY annoying and unlikable in this one! And T.C.'s infatuation with ballet is downright bizarre.![]()
) which invariably has a ballet in it. I completely appreciate the athleticism of the dancers, which is amazing. Those who disparage it are not athletes themselves, I feel. I think TC as a character was more interesting because of it.
I do agree that Kendall was an annoying character, but that was the point. Magnum had to deal with a difficult personality. If she was a very pleasant person, much of the conflict and interest would have been lost. On a humorous side note, Magnum was absolutely correct that she walked like a duck!I had a student 15 or more years ago when my daughter was about 5 or 6. She was a very talented dancer and was teaching ballet lessons her senior year before leaving for college. Her pupils included my daughter. I recall more than once noting her walking with turnout. I suppose a dancer can only hold all the positions for so long before it becomes normalized!

T.C. can't like ballet. He's macho. He even demanded a macho lei.Styles Bitchley wrote: ↑Tue Dec 21, 2021 4:45 am Pretty sure Ivan’s just provoking you for a laugh, Pahonu. Re: 40th Anniversary Watch Party
Surprised there was no Christmas pause in the 80s like they do these days (never understood with the number of eyeballs on the idiot box).
So here it be:

December 24th, 1981
[CBS 8:00] Magnum, P.I.
Ghost Writer
Season 2, episode 11
With Patch Mackenzie (Virginia Fowler), Elisha Cook Jr. (Harold W. Farber), Alan Fudge (Security Chief), Louise Fitch (Mrs. Ballard), Jon Lormer (Barker), Edward Sheehan (Emerson White), Randy Spangler (Mike), L. Christian Moore (Oscar).
Virginia Fowler is ghost writing the autobiography of the elusive, wealthy eccentric Harold Farber. She hires Magnum after her apartment is ransacked and her notes and tapes of the book are stolen.

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

I'm with you TQ -- It's so interesting how times have changed -- new eps of Magnum aired on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but today you're lucky to get more than one new ep in December. I'll probably take this ep camping too.

I actually like Ghost Writer. One of those simple episodes that doesn't take itself too seriously. Very 80s somehow.

Re: 40th Anniversary Watch Party
Ghost Writer has a pretty wacky storyline. Some things are downright preposterous! TC shows up a day later and is hovering above the building just on a hunch? Really?
Okay, let’s not go there. There are some cool things to see here. The opening sequence with the chopper and jovial magnum score is one of the more delightful ones of the series. Magnum’s pink fashion choices (the rugby shirt and pink tie) are very much if the era and I think really fun. Magnum’s iconic laugh gets one of its best features of the series when he walks out in surgical scrubs to first meet “Farber.” TC also gives a perfect 4th wall break when Magnum asks him why he thinks he could get shot at when he flies to the roof to pick him up. So may great moments in this episode, despite the actual script.
Does anyone know the hotel Virginia stays at right on the water? It looks incredible.

If it's wacky, boring, uninteresting, or I don't like the speaker, I still look for the hidden gems.
Why I basically like every Magnum episode save 2 or 3 I probably will never re-watch.

Re: 40th Anniversary Watch Party
Well, I watched "The Sixth Position" on my "VCR" last night, and I'm watching "Ghost Writer" tonight. I enjoy both of these episodes, especially TC's parts in them. The Chronosport closeup in "Ghost Writer" is really fun, to me anyway.

Yeah. That’s the snippet that allowed for a clear ID of what watch he wore before the Rolex.
Fun light episodes.
