Maui Mystery Gamebook

#1 Post by Stirzy »

Hi everyone, I've just converted my copy of 'Maui Mystery' into a version you can play in a web browser and I thought that would be of interest to people here!
Maybe you could try it before you spend $500 on a vintage copy!

And you think in this day and age people are dumb enough to open a random google drive link?

Are we supposed to know what this game is?

How about an introduction and explanation of what you’re trying to share. In case you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of Russian bots spamming the boards lately.

So, you're saying that you created a website out of the mysterious old choose your own adventure book?

Where did you pick it up and why an html file and not a pdf or something like that?

I'm still not trusting enough to click through! You're not a Nigerian prince by any chance?

Looks like a legit Magnum thing (I have good anti-virus so checked).

Doesn't work for me though.

With his heavy eyebrows drawn together in thought, he stared gloomily down at the island of Molokai. The tall, brawny private investigator had never gotten over how alien Molokai appeared from the air. Most of the eastern end of the island was covered with a thick layer of rust-red lava, raw and hostile, as though smeared with strawberry jam. Hate to go down there, he thought. The voice of the beautiful young flight attendant came over the intercom. "We are approaching the island of Maui, the second largest in the Hawaiian chain. Like all our other islands, it was formed by volcanic action. The main volcanoes are Haleakala, at ten thousand feet on the eastern end, and Puu Kukui in the western end, at fifty-seven hundred and ninety feet.” Magnum wasn't listening to her. She went smoothly on, about the climate and produce of Maui and how you could see the smoking tip of Mauna Loa on the distant island of Hawaii, and that if the base of Mauna Loa were at sea level it would be the highest mountain in the world. Why me? Magnum thought. Surely there must be other investigators on Maui. But Magnum knew why. I'm not Nigerian, but I'm certainly a prince! :D

I turned it into an html file as it was just the easiest to do using google drive's optical character recognition and 'Twine' (software for mapping out interactive fiction.)

It's not currently a website as it's not hosted anywhere, it's just an html file in a shared folder that needs to be downloaded and then opened in a browser to work.

I bought it on the uk abebooks years ago, for not a lot of money.

Once you click the link, there should be a download button at the top right, once you've saved it locally you can then open 'Magnum P.I. Maui Mystery.html' in your web browser and then it should work.

Okay, I went ahead and did it. That's fantastic!

Hope you don't mind the initial skepticism. I don't trust any mysterious files on the internet.

Such a fun treasure you've put together here. Maybe it's something Conch can put on the website so it can be accessed by everyone. Can you post a few good photos of the front and back of the book? Was your copy published in the UK?
