The next one is excellent - one of my favorite's of the season! So be careful... :|
Oh oh...

Glad I saw this before commenting so I can temper my thoughts.

Thought it was kinda boring.

Interesting beginning... very exciting ending with the dummies and assassination attempt.

The in-between 30 minutes had me zombified like I had amnesia.

I imagine I'm in quite a bit of trouble now.

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

Wait... whaaaat????

How did you find the middle stuff boring??? Those are the best parts of the episode! Where Danno slowly begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I find all that stuff pretty riveting, including McGarrett using his chalkboard again and jotting down bits of information that they know and then filling in the blanks. That's vintage Five-O right there! Before the modern CSI crap. Maybe you were in a foul mood or something or were distracted by something else? Hmm... :? If anything I thought you would say this was great and reminded you of MPI's "Try to Remember" where Magnum suffered amnesia. I like both episodes (also KNIGHT RIDER's "Knightmares" - I guess I like amnesia stories) but I like this episode much more! So sorry...

Anyway, the next 3 episodes (the only 3-parter in the series!) is not only the best of this season but of the entire 12-year run! Stone-cold CLASSIC! There's no way you won't like it. Noooooooooo waaaaaaaay!!!!!!!!

LOL

I thought all-in-all was a good episode. Just felt it dragged quite a bit. The slow reveal.

Try To Remember is one of my favourite episodes so... can't explain it.

I will not disappoint re. the 3-parter.

Already watched 20 minutes of part one The Son (left for a swim before a quick Zoom thing) and it's good so far.

Will resume tomorrow.

I have to say as a teacher for 25 years, that I’ve never heard the use of a chalkboard described as “riveting”.

The Vashon trilogy is great, though.

Thanks for bolding my expressions of shock and disbelief in my previous post. Now you know how I feel. :D Anyway, it's IMPOSSIBLE to say anything negative about the upcoming 3-parter. If you do you can forget the bamboo cage. You're getting shipped straight to the gulag!

If I had only known the power of the chalkboard back then. Maybe no one said it was riveting because I print everything!

I don’t remember this scene in particular but I do remember him using a chalkboard on occasion.

'V' for Vashon: The Son

You're right.

Very, very good.

I'm loving Harold Gould in this. I only really automatically know him from The Sting but he's really good.

The family dynamics really interests me too so far (Son, Father, Patriarch). Extra punch to the storyline.

And, of course, family loyalties dictate it's all McGarrett's fault. They can't see their own kid/grandson as being the spoiled brat that he is.

Solid.

MPI: Love Tanaka in this.

I knew the gulag comment would set you straight! :P

Excellent episode, right? The second part is the best of the trilogy, however. So things are only revving up!

Harold Gould is indeed great as Honore Vashon. But greater still is Luther Adler as Dominick Vashon. He's a real snake as you will soon see. You don't want to cross that old codger! It's interesting but Robert Drivas who played the son Chris was nearing 40 years old at the time but he's supposed to be playing someone in his late teens/early 20s I think. That's really pushing it by casting him. Still, he's very good in the part. Agreed on Kwan Hi Lim as Tosaki, the very loyal Vashon servant/henchman/fixer/what-have-you. He's just slimy enough to be working for the Vashons. Everything in these episodes is Emmy-worthy - from the writing to the acting to the music to the photography to the direction (by Charles Dubin). Just a complete package!

I often wondered if the release of THE GODFATHER in 1972 wasn't an inspiration for this trilogy. The Vashon crime family was perhaps inspired by the Corleones? Both follow their own family code and are ruthless in protecting their family. Both murdered their way to the top and now see themselves as "legit" (as the son says to his pop that they only skim on taxes now). Both attend church and seem to be devout Catholics while dabbling in murder on the side - utter hypocrisy! I see lots of parallels. There was also some discussion in the Five-O community about what nationality the Vashons are supposed to be. It's not explicitly stated but there's a scene in either this episode or the next one where old Dom Vashon says "avec plaisir" which means "with pleasure" in French. So the Corleones were Italian and the Vashons are French. I think old Dom says he came to the islands (from Corsica perhaps?) and had to teach everyone to respect him. I'm guessing Honore was probably born in the islands. Certainly Chris was. Again the parallels with old Vito Corleone coming to the U.S. from Sicily as a young boy and rising to the top while raising his family here.

Here you go:

https://ibb.co/HCvR9rj

The surname Vashon was an occupational name for a cow herder. Originally the name Vashon was derived from the Old French word "vache," meaning "cow."

Thanks! There you go. Old Nick was a cow herder in Corsica. He got tired of it and left for Hawaii in search of a better life - a life of murder, extortion, prostitution, intimidation, etc.

Love filling in these pieces of the puzzle. :D
