Season 1.. Don't Say Goodbye is the episode that the lads chewed through the wires...

Mondrago house is the Charles Cooke House on Manoa Road.

Here is a list of HFO filming locations..

What a nice site.

That someone would keep that up for so long is awesome.

Hope someone someday makes a www.RememberingTQfromMagnumMania.com site.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys! That's the house.

Didn't realize it was also used in season 7's "Ring of Life". I'll have to double check.

Also wasn't this used for the earliest exterior of the KKC? http://magnum-mania.com/images/1_13_i_full.jpg This is from "All Roads Lead to Floyd". It's actually the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki. I don't think that's the one T.Q. had in mind though when talking about the Mondrago residence. I think he was talking about the Marks Estate here http://magnum-mania.com/images/kkc_building_2_full.jpg, which was the standard "front exterior" of the KKC starting with season 2 and onwards.

The thing is you said "original KKC" and "early in Magnum" so I thought you were referring to one of the lesser-known early locations used in season 1. The location above is the well-established KKC exterior that we all know and love. :D

Yes, the first season used the Elks Lodge. According to JJ’s information page on the website, it proved too crowded and loud for regular filming. I’d love to pick the brains of the location scouts from the first few seasons about places they considered and didn’t choose, even more so for the pilot. Where else, if anywhere, did they look before deciding on Pahonu??? I remember an interview with Bellisario where he explained how they wanted to depict visually the Hawaii of the pre-war years as opposed to modern Hawaii. That would have limited possible locations.

I have a friend, who years ago worked on locations for the show Silk Stalkings. She was basically a liaison between the location property owners and the production, but she went on all the location scouting trips with the art director and others because she would take care of all the details and paperwork. She had some good stories about them trying to convince property owners of places that had never done such a thing before. Of course, Eve Anderson was familiar with this process, but she did end up placing new limitations on the production’s interior access that she hadn’t done before. That really explains why the pilot’s interiors were in other homes excepting the guest house set. Negotiating those details are exactly the kind of thing my friend had to negotiate with the owners.

My brain gets scrambled with that kinda stuff.

I saw the building and only flash backed to the scene of the front door and the roof over the drive-up area.

Where my pea brain went from there is anyone’s guess.

Wow, I think it's great! I think it's better than the previous episode. The trash disposal of the baddies was actually based on a true story if I recall correctly. I think Mike Quigley mentions this in his review. I think it even happened in Hawaii. I'm guessing organized crime isn't your favorite story-line, T.Q. Get ready for those because starting with season 4 there's a lot of them coming. Some of them are really great, in particular a 3-parter in season 5 which many consider to be the highlight of the series! You will soon notice also that the show becomes a bit more violent and seedy starting with season 4. You'll see a lot more downtown Honolulu and the seedy urban jungle of the Hotel Street area. Pimps, prostitution, extortion - that type of thing. I like to think seasons 1-3 are more "island-flavored" whereas 4-6 are more on the seedy/gritty urban side. Of course that's not to say that you won't get anymore ocean or mountain views. You'll still get plenty of those! :D But being as this was 1971 and ALL IN THE FAMILY became the #1 show in America and as more controversial TV programs began to air and push the limits I think FIVE-O followed suit. In fact the show got some flack for its violence (other crime dramas did too during this time, like MANNIX) until in the latter half of the 70s there was a conscious push to tone down the violence on TV, ushering in more light-hearted fare like CHARLIE'S ANGELS and CHiPs and DUKES OF HAZZARD and stuff like that. Or should I say "fluff" like that. That's why the last 3 seasons of FIVE-O feel watered down and lack the bite of the earlier seasons. Anyway, that's a little history for ya. :) Over on the FIVE-O boards there have been many discussions about which seasons are better and it seems that many gravitate more towards seasons 4-6. Of course the show peaked in the ratings during seasons 5 and 6. Me personally? I love the first 6 seasons pretty evenly. It's like choosing between your children. You can't pick a favorite. After that I would probably go with 7, 9, 8. Though overall the show was really strong for 9 seasons, before a noticeable decline starting with season 10.

Anyway, hope you noticed Henry Darrow playing the sleazy Johnny Oporta. He was on MPI. And another pre-good guy appearance by Al Harrington as one of Oporta's goons!

Henry Darrow played the police contact in early episodes of Harry O before being replaced by Anthony Zerbe.

The Vashon trilogy is outstanding.

It's an excellent episode!! I'd place it in my top 3 for the season! I like how it plays out like a typical serial killer story and then at the end there's a twist with a copycat killer who turns out to be someone you didn't expect. There's also shades of "Most Likely to Murder" (from season 2) here where we find out the husband, a "good guy" (Tom Skerritt/Monte Markham) who's been doggedly pursuing the "killer" isn't at all what he seemed. Soon-Teck Oh as the killer was really creepy, as was the face painting accompanied by that wonderfully creepy music by composer Richard Shores. One of his best scores! Also love the use of the car wash to get the keys to the women's homes. Very clever!

Hey T.Q. this season has my all-time favorite FIVE-O episode, but I ain't telling which one until after you see it. :P

Yep, and Anthony Zerbe also appears on HFO in the excellent season 6 episode "Mother's Deadly Helper".

The Vashon trilogy is definitely in my TOP 3 all-time HFO episodes! In particular the second part - "'V' for Vashon: The Father".

I remember the Zerbe episode well. He plays a vigilante going after criminals he believes got off. I pretty much DVR anything I see his name attached to. I’m not a Mannix fan but I enjoyed an episode with him recently.

Zerbe had those great facial features, it's hard to even explain it. He just looked unique. I suppose saying he looked "villainous" isn't really doing him justice. Didn't his one eye look kinda funny? Kinda squinty? Anyway, I remember Zerbe best as Milton Krest in the 1989 Timothy Dalton Bond flick LICENCE TO KILL! Poor guy got his head exploded in that one, yikes!!!

He definitely had a bit of a stray eye. He also had kind of craggy and angular features that made his face more expressive perhaps. He played a sort of Amish-type character in an episode of Kung Fu so it wasn’t always villainy.

He was also in a good Rockford Files episode as an alcoholic writer working on a new book who needs Jim’s help. There’s also a running gag in the episode about how his last and only successful novel is so long and complex that no one seems to have actually finished reading it. It was called Freefall to Ecstasy and was a stream of consciousness type of work like Joyce’s Ulysses.
