This one is below than good for me (average at best). The story have some flaws and far-fetched leading events and outputs:

- how did the father in law knew about the sea side shack ? It would have been nice to explain it more than "he was a fisherman";
- I know that traditionnalism in Japan could be difficult to understand for occidental cultures, but from my point of view, if one was dishonored, it was the father in law who loose control of himself and commited the killing of McWilliams, therfore, made her daughter a widow;
- The reasons why McWilliams quit are ambivalent in the episode: fiscal fraud/ fed up with husband life/ preserve his wife's honor ?;
- Higgins should be a company law specialist, all right. But his two minutes conclusions concerning the fiscal situation of McWilliams Ownings/savings are a bit ... far fetched !
- During the Kidnapping, the 1965 ford galaxie in REALLY reckonizable WITH his COMPLETE and not Hidden License plate !! The cop just aside would had NO difficulty to note it: BBR 877 !
- The orange Jeep driver is either blind, deaf or really stupid: The Hugues 500 is just two hundreds yards behind him, flying at 12 feets !! Just in his RW mirror !!
- after the tunnel near-collision scene, how could TM and TC be sure that the the perticular car they chased was the right one ??? There were numerous cars passing by at that precise moment (abour 1 minute 1minute and half of time spread) !
- either the bribe attempt of the captain was a plain failure either TM was short of twenty bucks... as a result TC had 13 islands to scout !!

Moreover, i have to agree that Irene Yah-Ling-Sun's play was dull ad that the post-wedding scene was one of the worst i have seen for the whole show !

For the good point, i really enjoyed the scenes where TC, Rick and Higgins assist the poor Magnum with filling his income-tax return !!

Hi Strife, and welcome among the Magnum Maniacs !

As you can imagine, forty years passing, MacWilliams Shack is no more visible today. Besides, you have to consider that the place was probably set in purpose for the episode.

However, years ago, Rubber's Chicken, in his guide, was able to locate its former location, at Pua'ena Point, north of Waialua Bay, and SW of the remnant of Haleiwa abandonned airstrip.

I would add that Hawaii’s beachfront property values seem to be similar to Southern California’s, where I’m at. That being the case, there are essentially no beach shacks left here. The property values are too high. When I was a child in the 70’s you still could find a few of these left, most often built decades earlier and passed down to the next generation. With very few exceptions, these have since been sold and remodeled beyond recognition into much larger homes, typically two stories with roof decks. Their values are largely in the land, as beachfront property is a finite resource. You see very few old properties, if any, right on the beach. Beyond just remodeling, land value also makes tearing down the old structures completely and entirely rebuilding financially profitable, witness Pahonu. That wouldn’t be so for more typical properties.

My wife and I have discussed this before and on occasion while traveling have noticed the rare old house on the sand. These tend to be far from any populated areas and they are often in complete disrepair or abandoned entirely. This is typically because the California Coastal Commission will not approve any renovation permits because of the particular location of the structure. No new development would be legal in that location so a future sale is nearly impossible because it can’t be insured. Therefore, any improvements would be unrecoverable financially. I think these types of limitations are in play with the boathouse at Pahonu. Hawaii has pretty strict coastal development laws like California. Perhaps it will be allowed to remain and be restored, but I don’t see any way they will allow it to be remodeled or expanded.

The fact is that nowodays most beachfronts are public domain. It could help explain why, if there was once an old shack there, it was removed long time ago...

Nice catch Sam ! i think there are some old photos from the time where the mansion was arranged for private bedding. Besides, 15 M$ is not so much it would represents around 3300 € per square meter, not so much for french luxury housing standard.

I enjoyed reading the notes for this episode describing MPI as not another “muscle head “ 80’s detective show. That was why I didn’t start watching the show until about season 4, when I caught my then husband watching and got hooked myself. It wasn’t until 2020 that I caught the reruns and picked up where I left off, somewhere after early season 7. I love the show! And though I’ve tried to watch other 80’s shows, nothing compares to Magnum, even today.
I wish that I’d found this forum when it started! I could see being totally immersed in Magnum-Mania!
