Good episode.
Shades of Magnum P.I. Vietnam flashback episodes.
Oh yeah that was a great one! Very tense and Yaphet Kotto gave an Emmy-worthy gut-wrenching performance as the shell-shocked marine lance corporal. I loved how McGarrett was able to play to his hallucinations and pretend to be a part of the rescue mission at the end to end the whole standoff. Well done! You may have noticed that they filmed at the Castle Memorial Hospital (today called Adventist Health Castle) in Kailua, same hospital where they filmed MPI's "Heal Thyself" -

What did you think of "Deathwatch"? One of the very best. I love it more and more each time I watch it! Nehemiah Persoff and James Shigeta really nail their roles as the hoods Harry Cardonus and Joe Matsukino. You can see how disgusted McGarrett is at having to protect this creep who ordered the hit on McGarrett's friend but he has no choice because he wants to nail the bigger fish Matsukino! Fantastic episode! I love those episodes where they have to protect someone long enough so they can testify. They did a few of these.
Darn you Ivan, T.Q. etc,
You guys got me jonesing so bad for this great series I might have to go out and buy it. I just can't understand why it isn't shown more when crud like Barnaby
Jones with Buddy Ebsen sleep walking thru the title role goes on and on. I might have mentioned it somewhere on Magnum Mania before but 2 years ago when
MeTV ran Hawaii 5-0 for a few months(I hadn't seen it in 30 years) I was astounded by the quality of season one.
Simon Oakland in particular was brilliant as an WW 2 vet, it might have been the best thing he ever did.
Ivan, you mentioned James Shigeta, for my money he was one of the top character actors. When he was on a Burkes Law, whose every episode teemed with
great old actors trying to out ham each other, he stole the show. That's another reason to appreciate 5-0, all the great guest stars, big and not so big.
Hey Dobie,
Simon Oakland did guest star in the first season, playing a native Hawaiian named Benny Kalua in "Strangers in Our Own Land", but the one you're talking about where he played a crippled WWII vet (or was it Korean War vet??) was season 3's "The Reunion". I love that episode and I agree that it's his best acting on the show. You really feel for him there! He made a total of 5 appearances on the show. But I'm also reminded of his 2 appearances on BONANZA where both times he played a particularly unsettling serial killer, first in season 4's "Thunder Man" (a real highlight!!) and then in season 9's "Justice Deferred" where he plays dual roles. In both episodes he preys on women and can't control himself. Sexual assault is implied. Pretty rank stuff for a show like BONANZA. Kinda pops the balloon of those who like to dismiss BONANZA as mindless fluff, contrasting it to GUNSMOKE for instance. Who can forget Lee Marvin in full psychotic mode in the classic episode "The Crucible"? The result was Pernell Roberts giving what is no doubt the best performance of his career! It's no easy task holding your own against someone like Lee Marvin. But I digressed.... sorry

Nice post, Ivan! "The Reunion", yes, just outstanding. Oakland's whistling absolutely creeped me out in "Justice Deferred".
It's silly but I never quite trusted him after that, I wanted to tell Carl Kolchak to watch it when around him as the two serial killer parts you cited come
to mind whenever I see him. Now that's acting.
I am chuffed you talked about the Lee Marvin episode! I think you are right, Pernell probably took it as a professional challenge to not just keep up but outdo
Marvin, and Lee must have felt the same way. Two pros circling each other like wolves, no quarter given and the viewers were the winners.
I am surprised nobody has started a Bonanza thread as yet on Magnum Mania. It's still a huge hit around the world.
But you are right, we digress, Conch will have Dan-o escort us out of this thread.
