Season 1 - Magnum P.I. begins filming July 23th

#1 Post by Core 4 »

We know date when Magnum P.I. begins filming - July 26 (two weeks after Hawaii Five-0). Of course, the pilot is already filmed, so they that day begins filming episode 1.02. Just before the filming, a traditional blessing ceremony will take place. I hear that Magnum P.I. will not be in the same studio as Hawaii Five-0. But in Kapolei/Kalaeloa Film Studio, there was based the TV show The Inhumans last year (canceled by ABC after season 1).

OK, I know I've poo poohed this reboot, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to seeing production pics. :) So far the pilot looks very similar to the original series' pilot episode. Wondering how much more similarities we'll see?? :magnum:

My knowledge of film and TV production is limited, and my experience nonexistent, but I would say that 7.23 and 7.26 are both correct dates. If I had to bet, they begin production tomorrow, and they begin actual filming on 7.26. They likely have a couple / few days of table reads, production preparation, review story boards, final costume fittings, etc. IMO, the chances they shoot any scenes on day one of a new series / production has to be miniscule.
Trust Me!!!

I have some knowledge and experience in production. There are generally three major phases. Pre-production includes story development, writing and revision, casting, location scouting, etc... Basically anything that has to happen before the cameras roll. They've been doing this for many months already, basically since we all started talking about it. I knew a few people involved at this end. Production is everything that happens on set or location like sound, lighting, make-up and wardrobe, props, stunts, and of course filming. I worked for a couple of years as a production assistant on an hour-long drama and learned a lot about what everybody does. I can maybe answer some questions you guys might have. Post-production includes film editing, music, sound mixing, foley, and finally advertising and distribution. I know much less about this part.

The terms "filming" or "shooting" generally means the day the cameras roll. There isn't usually enough time to story board a weekly series. That's for feature films, especially those with many effects. Table reads are usually for developing comedies. As they read, they brainstorm new ideas and refine the jokes and timing. In dramas everybody gets scripts as they need them and as they are revised by the writer and director. The versions are sometimes referred to by color. Changes in dialogue wouldn't affect the set design or property department, for example, but clearly the actors and directors need those updates. Likewise, adding a new setup requires just about everybody on set or location to do something, so those changes are very limited and become very costly. There are lots of other positions in the production crew such as script supervisor, stand-ins, continuity, craft service, atmosphere, and other jobs many people may not be aware of, or don't understand what they do precisely. It's been nearly 25 years since I was involved, but a lot remains the same.
