How do you get your Magnum fix?
Besides watching Magnum episodes, I mean? Is there a hobby or activity you do that feels particularly Magnum-esque? A favorite restaurant or bar that feels like one of Thomas's favorite Honolulu haunts? Is your backyard a tropical paradise?
Here are mine:
1. Being out in Galveston Bay or the Gulf of Mexico on my SOT kayak on a warm summer day, feels like I'm crossing the Molokai Channel on a surfski. Also being out on my sailboat, though I don't think I ever saw Magnum sail.
2. Houston has a large Vietnamese community and "Little Saigon" not far from my house, with all sorts of Vietnamese restaurants and grocery stores, a few Buddhist temples, and the architecture of all the shopping centers is very evocative. Walking around, shopping, and getting some cha gio and a bowl of bun feels very Magnum-esque to me.
3. Thanks to the Gulf Coast climate, I can have a tropically landscaped backyard, with banana trees, ginger plants, plumeria, etc. and an ornamental pond, that feels a little like the grounds of Robin's Nest.
4. There is a Bennihana's near my house that's been around at least since the early 80s, that for some reason has a very Magnum vibe to me. A lot of sushi/Japanese restaurants can exude some degree of Magnumness, but this one especially.
5. There is a little Japanese grocery store near me (those of you on the West Coast may be familiar with Seiwa) where I can get Japanese ingredients and sushi-grade fish. Taking those down to my bay house and making my own sushi after a day on the kayak feels like a pretty complete Magnum day to me.
6. Just sitting and watching my fish aquarium, a 55 gallon high brackish (almost full seawater) with white crushed coral beach sand substrate, with its school of silver monos.

Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
I watch 1-3 episodes a week while working out at home in the garage.
Few times a day I will tell my dogs (Bundy and Griff), Hi Guys! when I let them in the house.
I live on a corner so I will tell the dogs, Bundy, Griff Patrol, and they will run back and forth between the gates looking for somebody walking a dog on one of the 2 streets.
Weekends I will sit in the backyard where I have fake grass that is nice and green with about 8 Plumeria and 4 Hawaiian Hibiscus growing, plus 1 Bird of Paradise and close my eyes for a moment think I am at Robins Nest.
Every once in a while I will buy Coors Light long necks in lieu of cans and think they are Coops. If I see regulars Coors long necks I will grab those. Just typing this means I will no doubt grab some on the way home from work.

I too watch a couple of episodes a week. I started collecting second hand (or vintage as they say now) Aloha shirts about 20 years ago. I have over a hundred. I stick to cotton. Mostly Tori Richard, Reyn Spooner, Quiksilver and Cooke Street. I wear them every day from June through September. I have a few of TM’s from the show; the red Jungle Bird and the purple Calla Lily. I don’t wear them though. That would be like wearing Superman’s cape. For years I have been searching for this one with no success. It’s my white whale. I would wear this shirt. I love it.

Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
I recently got my "estate", an ocean-front property with a long, curved driveway. Sometimes I like to "down-shift and accelerate" while driving my blue Bug past the main house. I've got my "surf-ski-equivalent", a catamaran that I can row or sail with. I've got my telephoto lenses, my Rolex-esque dive watch, my dive gear and my "Dracos III". This year, I'll get a couple kudu-buck "Lads" to patrol.
I run barefoot down the beach - but only in summer because I'm in Canada and it's f-ing cold trying to do it in winter.

Oh, I forgot - there's a Buddhist monastery across the street from my house and occasionally I hear gongs, like from the "Valley of the Temples". I haven't yet checked if there's a sumo wrestler and a midget (or a dwarf) there.

When you say you have a few from the show, do you mean just the same manufacturer and model, or are you talking the actual individual shirts that sat in wardrobe on the Magnum set?Fr. Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
In this suburban, traffic-filled hell that I live in? Not much! I guess it would be slugging down a longneck or enjoying a good "whiskey on ice!" "Paradise", and all that entails, is so far removed from me, it's sad! Disregarding all the fake crap that is out there, I guess I would have to say Howard's Pub on Ocracoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. That's real people down there! And that little island is indeed "Paradise"!Reef monkey wrote:Besides watching Magnum episodes, I mean? Is there a hobby or activity you do that feels particularly Magnum-esque? Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
Thanks RG, I remember reading that thread some time ago, but I had no idea where to find it. The last time I was in Honolulu I stopped by Baileys Antiques and Aloha Shirts. They claim to have over 15,000 Aloha shirts in stock. It’s a few minutes walk from the Honolulu Zoo. They told me they get a few people a year looking for this shirt but they’ve never come across one. I’ve heard Selleck say before that all his shirts were hand made so it may have been a “one of”. But I dream of finding it one day. I’ll check with LG. Thanks again for the link.Rembrandt's Girl wrote:Hi Fr. Paddy,Fr. Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
Ohhhhhhhh, for some reason I thought it was a Paradise Found shirt. Well, since that's not the case, I saw this comment on Lenkov's Instagram the other day. If it wasn't her who made the shirt maybe she knows who did or where to find one! Here's her website & Instagram - her name is Patti Tudisco...Fr. Being a landlubber, I have only a couple things.
I have a Steinhart Pepsi GMT watch -- https://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/dive ... d-968.html
There is a relatively local Hawaiian restaurant that I go to whenever I am in town: http://hawaiianbbqnc.com/
I too watch a few episodes a week.
I do not have any shirts or a team ring, but I would love to. Maybe someday.

Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
I come here and watch a few episodes a week like others have said. Beyond that, there are several Magnum references in my everyday life. My ringtone is the theme song, so I hear it every time someone calls me and every morning for my alarm. I own a 13 acre estate, situated between 3 different lakes, with a beach right across the driveway. The curved drive circles near the house, which has brick archways that remind me of the arches of Robin's Nest. Pahonu has always been my dream home, as I'm sure it is for many others here, and I wanted a home that at least reminded me of it in some way. The estate is located on Falcon Road and so I have appropriately named it, the Falcon's Nest. We also have several beach bars at different resorts on the lakes up here, which give you a Magnum feel during the summer months.
Bonus: My dad had a TM-esque mustache when I was growing up in the '80s/'90s and still does to this day.

Magnum, remember what I told you about Robin Masters?
I lied.
I lied.
Re: How do you get your Magnum fix?
When I was a kid my family used to vacation close there, in Hatteras (the next island northeast of Ocracoke). Our first year there we went crabbing on the northern part of Ocracoke, but never made it to the "city." I'd consider the whole Outer Banks "Paradise."J.J. Walters
