Yep, I am so proud to be the son of P-38 pilot from WWII. Luckily we forced him to write down his experience about when he was shot down 10 days after d-day in northern France before he passed away. His was an incredible story like so many others and included in a chapter on the 55th fighter squadron of the 8th Army Air Force. The Greatest Generation for sure!!!

Wow, you two are amazing! A couple of quick addendums to my fathers story in Double Nickels. In the early sixties when we were still in Walnut Creek, CA, Madame Heller, the great woman that cared for so many allies including my father, came to San Francisco and visited us. I was probably 7 or 8 years old so the enormity of that event was lost on my youth.
The other story is, back in the nineties my father received a letter from a Frenchman that had tracked him down through a painstaking internet search in the early days of search engines. He was 16 years old at the time of my fathers squadrons attempt to take out the bridge, saw my fathers plane hit, watched him bail out too low and never knew if he had died on impact, was captured or escaped. The two started up a correspondence that culminated in my father and his wife being invited over to the town in Northern France where he was first hidden. They had a Parade in his honor, presented him with the key to the town and even had a few pieces of his wrecked P-38 they had kept and later shipped to him.
As so many of that generation, my father was magnanimous, humble and had a sly sense of humor. As such, he always made sure he ended this story by saying that when he visited the railroad bridge they were trying to bomb into oblivion there wasn't a mark on it and yet was still a hero.........LOL!

This morning on the Hawaii News Now Sunrise show they had an interview with Tim Gray, the producer of "Remember Pearl Harbor", and he discusses the documentary and mentions how great TS is narrating it...

Thanks for sharing these truly amazing addendums with us Steve! I think it's great that he was invited back to France where they rolled out the red carpet for him! Too bad you were so young when Madame Heller visited.....I can just imagine the stories that were shared that day!
Have you done anything special with the few pieces of his P-38 that he was given (in a glass case, hanging up etc)?

Everything is safe and secure with his wife (widow) at their property in North Carolina where he moved to after he retired from 3M company. The only item I would like to have someday is his Purple Heart but we want to keep all of the mementos together for now. By the way, Kenji, he was one of only four salesman for 3M that sold adhesives to the aerospace industry so even though he never flew again after the war he stayed up on the latest in aviation. My most vivid memory was when I was 16 and we saw Apollo 15 blast off.

The original article and the interview on Hawaii News Now both said it would air on about 125 PBS stations around the country after the premiere, which was on December 4th on Ford Island on Oahu. I see it's listed at 8 pm on December 7th on Hawaii's PBS station but I don't think I can get there in time (ha-ha, dream on!)
