Most of Waikiki beach has been closed after half a million gallons of sewage spilled near the famous tourist resort following heavy rain.
Lori Kahikina, Honolulu director of environmental services, said that storm water had overwhelmed the sewage system, causing the wastewater to spew from manholes and into the ocean.
Authorities have said it could be days before the ocean is clear enough for people to enter the water safely.
