The pockets are hard to see most of the time.

If memory serves me, I think Magnum wore the type of shirt you describe in the episode Ghost Writer. Pink, I believe. It might be easier to see the pocket with the lighter color. I had exactly that type of shirt in the mid-eighties in navy blue. I had never heard of the term "kangaroo pocket" but it makes sense. They weren't long and meant to be tucked in, as you can see in the picture with the grease gun. By the way, I also had a banded collar shirt in light blue with stripes back then. Styles change and some of these things just aren't produced any more, I guess. Good luck finding one!

Sorry about the other thread, didn't see this one.

That's the top I'm talking about.

Will be posting some screengrabs shortly.

I see now. The pockets aren't like that front pouch in a hoodie. They're almost like jacket pockets in the side. Pretty odd design actually. Probably easier to buy a rugby shirt and take it to your local tailor with a photo.

Looks like they specifically chose a type with more buttons than usual to show of Selleck's burly chest!

For some reason, I couldn't see Thomas or his shirt in this one!

For some reason I feel like attending the University of Hawaii now.

Ha!

Just kidding.

Gotta love the fashions of the 80's.

Sorry for the late reply, just decided to join. The shirts in question were made my a company called Merona, in both short and long sleeve versions. The long sleeve versions had the kangaroo pocket, and both had vent holes at the armpit. First saw one in real life in 1980, disappeared by '85 or so. I owned a pink short sleeve ala' magnum, and yes, I was constantly trying to dress like him during this time, so I can provide other clues as to the stuff he wore. Unfortunately, can't find the shirsts anywhere. Merona is still in business, but now sells exclusively thru Target.

Anybody know what the patch is on Magnum's shirt? He wears this shirt for pretty much the entire "Old Acquaintance" episode:

"A dolphin is a mammal, not a fish."
"You... burned down the goalposts."
"Goldie!!"

"Old Acquaintance" cracks me up. :)

Ok good news and bad news, and perhaps all a bit too late. I too have been looking for one of these for over a year (Oh how this site makes me feel normal lol) with no luck, but with a few keywords I've picked up on in this thread I believe I have found THE shirt... drumroll please...

Now for the bad news, there doesn't seem to be any current buying info attached to this... so close, yet so so far :(

Close Jellyman, but no Montecristo. That one has the kangaroo pocket, but the pockets on Magnum's are fitted into the seam at the side of the shirt. Sort of like jacket pockets, rather than one long front pocket. It's a real weird one.
