KENJI wrote:Hi Steve,

The Naval Intel. Mac and Maggie factor is totally there! I think Steve has it better than Thomas on this one!

James also makes a good point about the breaking of the laws, it makes them borderline criminals themselves. I wish they would've made the new Steve M., the grandson of the original and come up with different names for the rest of the cast. It is confusing and disappointing at the same time.
Lets hope they connect the dots a bit better in future episodes!!
I like it. Everybody liked dirty harry calahan because he got shit done and didn't worry about the rules. Same goes for jack bauer. thats why 24 sucked the last couple seasons, they made him follow the rules and do less badass stuff. The world today is way too uptight. They aren't official cops anyway, so "there's no red tape." And in the end, do you not approve of the way they got stuff done? They haven't killed anyone who wasn't a terrorist yet, and torture has been pretty tame, mcgarrett usually gives them a choice first, and no ones been gutted like a pig.
You gonna give a pardon or sympathy to someone that murders or rapes innocent people?
Not me.

Hi Zebra3,

I'm not saying I don't like the show or how they get "things done", but by trying to keep it more real/true to what 5-0 stood for back in the day helps us believe it ties into the 2010 version.
As for 24/ Jack Bauer /CIA and his interrogation tactics, I thought they were very fitting at that level and had no problem with how he got "things done".
As for the world today being uptight - Look at the L.A. riots/Rodney King/police episode, you can see that laws are there for a reason and when they are broken by the people we are suppose to trust the most (the police), there is going to be public backlash! We can debate it until we are blue in the face......I'd rather not. :)

It's all the "Hollywood factor" that's in play here. Of course it's not realistic. A special "task force" that can basically do anything it wants?! Not bloody likely in real life.

Amazing coincidences/timing?! Of course it doesn't happen in real life.

Being able to bust the bad guys in half a day or one full day?! Ha!

That's the magic. Suspension of disbelief. Would anyone watch a true police show if it was just like real life? Of course not.

I also get hung up on the details sometimes but then have to tell myself, this is a story. Not realilty.

Enjoy or not enjoy. YMMV.

Is the show COPS still on the air? Now there's a reality police show. Gotta love drugs and domestic abuse stories, however.

Cops is still on and I heard that it and America's Most wanted are two of the longest running shows on Television. Watching a whacked out on Meth, trailer trash guy running naked from the police just never get old does it!
And youare right about the Hollywood factor taking liberties. Funny thing is, the public cheers for those methods in movies and TV, but when it happens in real life, as it does here in Chicago a few times per year, the public cries police brutality........

J.J. Walters wrote:I finally watched the new Hawaii Five-0 (first two episodes). I'm kind of on the fence about it, truthfully. I like the cast, the production quality and the Oahu filming locations, but I'm having a hard time getting past the whole "reboot" thing. I REALLY don't like how there is no connection to the original! Why was there such a need to use the same character names (and change the original role of Steve McGarrett to Jack McGarrett)? Why not simply call some of them the sons/daughters/friends (whatever) of the original characters, as well as adding in a few new characters? You could then have all sorts of tie-ins to the original show. It's just too weird; it's like the original never happened. This kind of thing is ok for a one-off movie (Miami Vice, etc.), but it seems disrespectful to the original in a weekly television series!

Some of the dialogue is a little too cliched for my liking, and I don't like how there is just a reckless disregard for so many laws! It's ok to stretch it a little bit, but come on!

The Oahu filming locations is definitely the highlight for me. ;)
that's easy......brand recognition. The characters are iconic in the world of Tv. They are simply looking for that boost out of the gate. Ultimately the show will pass/fail on its' own merits......but in the game of ratings, every hook helps. In the music world, covering old songs is a quick way to get recognition.

I, myself, don't have any ties to the old Five-O.......too young to watch originals and never got hooked on syndication like other shows. Mondays are a bad night with football in full swing.

I know Magnum P.I. execs tried to get Jack Lord for a cameo back in the day, but it failed. That would've been cool.......................that said..........wouldn't a current Magnum cameo be even better? Just sayin'.

I'm in the same boat. I only saw a few of the original episodes. If you can't watch it Monday night, you can always watch it at cbs.com

Also, it might not be hard to get TS to do a cameo on the new 5-0 since his show and 5-0 are on the same network. The only hoop you might have to go through is if he wants to do it.

Before this past Monday's episode began, CBS put up this brief tribute to the late James MacArthur:

I was hoping they would do something like that.
Thanks L.G.

Finally a Rabbit Island shot! There is a quick shot of the island as HFO storms a house where an assasin is staying. It has to be very close to the estate based on the island shot, unless it is trick camera work making us think it is there....

Steve was wearing a real cool chest holster for his gun in this episode.
The rest of the team have standard holsters, so his really stood out.

At the end of the show there was a quick MPI connection, where Steve says to Dano that they should go for a couple of Longboards (beer) and he would pay, Dano quickly says let me see your wallet.....last time you said that you conveniently didn't have any money.......and I had to pay!
It isn't word for word, but Thomas never had any money either and Rick and T.C. were either paying for something or doing favours for him too.

I hadn't even thought of Magnum at the end of the ep. Now that you mention it, it's even funnier.

Did anyone see Scott Caan on Letterman the same night?

Letterman asked him, "What's it like living in Hawaii?"

Caan replied, "The first three weeks are great, but after a month, you begin to miss angry people."

I kept rewinding my DVR to see if they possibly were coming up the grounds of The Estate and used a different house for the interior shots. As you said from the perspective of where Rabbit Island was located, it had to be very close to The Anderson Estate............
