My boss and Magnum PI

#1 Post by Doc Ibold »

Funny story.

Was chatting with my boss about ebay and buying things there and it came up that I renewed my PayPal account so I could buy Larry Manetti's "Aloha Magnum" book.

Which, the only one by the way is $174!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was amazed that someone would even pay that for a book and one about Magnum PI nonetheless. His comment was "Man, there's got to be some REAL Magnum PI freaks out there to pay that much. How many can there be?"

I laughed and said "Dude, you need to check out Magnum-Mania.com". There's TONS of us (Magnum Freaks) out there. I'm Doc Ibold on the forums. I have a rapport with a lot of the forumites and the webmaster!

He looked at me oddly and I told him that he too would be addicted. He said he was too addicted to Star Wars to have a 2nd one.

Just thought I'd share!

He said he'd check it out, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Great story Doc.

$174.00 for Aloha Magnum. Wow. The price has really gone up drastically recently. That must be the edition with the gold-foil cover and hologram. :)

LOL!!

You should have replied with, "Yeah, well after those last three movies, how many Star Wars fans can there be?" [ba-dum-bah!] ;)

There are millions of Magnum fans! MILLIONS!

Heh!

Wow, that is incredible. Thanks for posting that Sam.

A word of warning. To my surprise, the copy I purchased on-line had an inscription and signature supposedly from Larry Manetti. The inscription was supposedly to his Aunt. Thinking that he may want this copy back for sentimental reasons, I emailed Larry Manetti at his website regarding the inscription and his signature. I described the inscription verbatim, and he kindly replied and said it wasn't authentic. If you are thinking about buying an autographed copy, you may want to see if you can authenticate the signature before you pay big bucks. Just a thought.

IH
, is it worth it?

I'll pay $99 for it if it is.

Hey Doc,

I think I paid between $40 and $60 for mine, I can't remember for sure. Is it worth $99? I'd hate to say either way, because as fans we each assess different values to different things. What is worth $100 to one person is not worth it to another. If you look at the book as a piece of MPI history, then it is probably worth $100. If you are looking at the book strictly for its writing and content, then probably not. A fair portion of the book does not deal with MPI at all (most of it does). LM has certain insights that we as fans will never have, so again, in that regard it is worth it. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Sounds good.

Thanks IH!

(I'll probably get it, but it would be a better "library read")

My goodness, I paid just the regular list price for this book several years ago and now I can't find it! I changed jobs in 2000 and when I packed up my office never did unpack everything because the job I went to provided me only with a cubie :P not a real office like I have been used to. (I don't like leaving my personal stuff in an unsecure area) I know it is around here some place, I never would have given or thrown it away.
Thank goodness since I changed jobs again recently I am on the verge of getting back into a regular secure office again!!
