Magnum Wore Pink First!!

If this topic has already been discussed, then I appologize as I'm fairly new.

Anyway, I also love the 80's crime show "Miami Vice"...and that show will forever be known as the show that introduced pastel colors for everyone! Pink and teal, especially for the guys, was everywhere...even on buildings!

However, as I've been going through the seasons of "Magnum, p.i." again...I've noticed that Magnum has a couple pink polo type shirts that he also frequently wears besides his Hawaiian shirts! I did not originally remember this, and it kind of surprised me! :shock:

This is 2-3 years before Crockett and Tubbs took over the pink wardrobe :P ...so maybe Crockett and Tubbs watched "Magnum, p.i." and got ideas for some of their shirts?? :lol:

LOL! :lol: Sorry, but it's true. But, there's nothing wrong with wearing pink...I love "Miami Vice" too, and the pastel shirts were awesome! They're also back in style too...I have a few pink and teal shirts in my closet. :wink:

I just thought it was strange to see Magnum in a pink shirt...as I had not remembered that when watching the show in years past. :)

Pink and yellow polos were pretty commonplace from what I remember in the early '80s (i.e., before Miami Vice). Magnum wore a few Lacoste polos, from what I remember, and these colours were staples in their uber-popular line. Don't remember teal so much though.

LOL! :lol: True...the "Death Wish" movies (the first couple anyway) were okay eye-for-an-eye style movies. But, Bronson wasn't the type to wear anything but dark/drab, or unmemorable clothes. He looked scary and half dead :P , so the stocking cap and old work clothes to go around killing people was much more his style. :wink:

But, the Hawaiian shirts or pastel shirts of "Magnum" and "Miami Vice" are definitely more my style!! 8)

And as Styles Bitchley stated, Magnum did wear a few pastel Lacoste polos...but I don't think he wore a teal one. Mostly pink and yellow.

How about if we just say it started out white but TM washed it the red parrot shirt!

LOL! :lol: That was possible...but I don't think Magnum would have continued to wear it, and a couple others, if he'd accidently turned them pink from washing them with the Jungle Bird shirt.

Another popular 80's action/adventure series had the "cool" guy wearing pink sometimes--"Knight Rider"! David Hasselhoff, as 'Michael Knight' was also known to dorn a pink shirt or two under his "Joe-Cool" black leather jacket, in a couple episodes.

Wearing pink, and other pastel colors, was a style in the 80's...and like it or not it's back right now! You know what they say...real men wear pink. I say pink...and palm trees (or jungle birds)! :P

I sometimes wear pinks shirts.

Pink doesn't have to be a pastel color. There are many different kinds of pink. I prefer the bold, strongly saturated kind, over the lighter pastel kind:

I seem to recall Magnum wearing lavender as well. That has to rank up there among the popular 80's pastels.

Yeah, Magnum had some pink, yellow, and I think there was a lavender colored shirt as well!

It was a style...one that several TV shows used at the time. As I said before 'Michael Knight' on "Knight Rider" also had a pink and a yellow shirt or two along the way.

However, no other TV show can take any real claim to fame by wearing pastel colors except "Miami Vice"!! :) Pastel colored clothes, as well as the colors on buildings, lighting, etc...became the show's trademark and part of the "ingredients" that made that show so sizzlingly, explosively popular!

Magnum mostly wore his Hawaiian shirts...which I also love, and they were definitely part of that show's trademark. Fashion, color, setting, music, and captivating or mezmerizing characters are truly what "make" a show!

Three popular shows, in my opinion, that truly capitalized on the fashion as one angle to make them popular were of course "Miami Vice" (with the pastels), "Charlie's Angels" (with the Angel's tight shirts/bikinis and bell bottoms) and "Magnum, p.i." (with Magnum's aloha shirts--mainly the red Jungle Bird and purple Cala-Lilly ones).

I recall reading somewhere that the set decorators for Miami Vice were under strict orders to never use earth tones. They even repainted buildings to eliminate all traces of them.

This is true...Michael Mann did not want any earth tones used in "Miami Vice", and instructed set people to get rid of all of those colors--including repainting many of the downtown buildings...mostly the older art deco ones.

The show is credited for a large part of the interest in preserving and restoring much of the classic art deco buildings (along with the pink and teal color scheme) that Miami is known for.
