The Two-Faced Corpse is my favorite S7 episode. The combination of the cast, the music by Don B. Ray, and the beautifully vivid color cinematography brings it all together for me. There is something about this episode in that it evocatively “brings me back” to the ‘70s I remember, which adds to my enjoyment for this episode.

There's a stunningly gorgeous shot of a blue, cloudless sky and green areca palms about 6 minutes into the episode, and the beachfront estate where the foxy Carla Crystal lives is a splendid digs, indeed.

Paul Hamilton, the FBI agent played by Alan Fudge--is a character I would have liked to have seen in a recurring role. The ongoing “let’s have lunch” banter between McGarrett and Hamilton was amusing to me; Hamilton even gets the episode’s last word.

I found the repeated use of the names Julio Bocher and Howard Crystal funny; they would make for some good cat names!

This is the episode where McGarrett has his arm bandaged over his shirt!

There are some great lines here. Carla Crystal, in her conversation with McGarrett, states “There hasn't been anything between us for over a year”—meaning nothing physical— because of Howard’s steroid use. Carla asks McG if he “Know how that is?”, to which Steve responds, “I’ve heard.” Hilarious!

Danno gets a good (off camera) line about onetime football enthusiast and Syndicate man Julio Bocher/Howard Crystal: “I’d want to be a good ‘open field runner’ if the Syndicate was after me.” I like the Five-0 team’s office brainstorming sessions in this one, with Ben talking about his bad old football days, which amuses the crew.

Abe Vigoda cashes in on his “Tessio” Godfather credentials and plays Syndicate big shot Abe Kemper.

The Five-0 team once again eats Chinese takeout; this always has me craving Chinese food, which I almost never eat.

Carla Crystal’s Mustang is probably one of the nicer cars of the “Malaise Era.” I used to have a ‘75 Mustang and it was a lemon; don’t even get me started on my 1970 Pontiac LeMans!

Sure, there are flaws in the narrative, as it’s obviously Sam Elliott’s distinctive voice at the beginning when we see Howard Crystal’s murder. However, I don’t watch TV shows just for the plot lines, which can only surprise the viewer once. I like the episode for entirely different reasons.

My Rating: 10/10
Gonna have to call you out on this one, Garwood! You so crazy! :P  Liking this episode is one thing or having nostalgic memories of it is fine but calling it the best from season 7 is INSAAAAAAAANE!! Especially when you had before this "I'll Kill 'Em Again", "The Young Assassins", and the atmospheric "A Hawaiian Nightmare", "We Hang Our Own", and "Bomb, Bomb, Who's Got the Bomb?" :D Something wrong with your atmosphere on this one, buddy.

Haha! I actually don't remember that reply from Steve. But I agree it's funny. It basically confirms that Steve's love life is nonexistent. :|

-You know about sex, Steve?
-I've heard.

I never said it was the “best”, just my favorite. You probably criticize people who like different foods than you do!

You’d do well to break free from the cage that is your conventional opinions of episodes.

Not to worry…you’ll come around to this episode, though it may take you more than the 12 years it took you to warm up to The Jinn Who Clears the Way.

Favorite, best - simple semantics. It's still crazy that that's your favorite episode of the season. I mean REALLY crazy!! :P

True, I've warmed to "Jinn" but I just don't think "Corpse" has the story material that "Jinn" has. Nor does it have that iconic freeze-frame at the end. "Let's do lunch" just doesn't cut it.

D'uh! What was I thinking?? We're talking Steve the Stud here!

I’ll bump my review, lest it be buried under talk of T.Q’s weight-lifting regimen and everyone rattling on with their On the Spectrum memories.

Can’t change for everyone coming late to the party.

How to Steal a Masterpiece (S7 E9)

George Voskovec (Durkin) plays another expert. This episode is also the start of what I call “The Cultured McGarrett.”

This cultured McGarrett is a latter-season concept, where he expresses great interest in all things sophisticated: poetry, paintings, and sculptures being among them.

Here are the episodes where McGarrett deals with stolen treasures:

Flash of Color, Flash of Death (S6)
Ring of Life (S7)
How to Steal a Masterpiece (S7)
Wooden Model of a Rat (S8)
Death Mask (S11)

Michael Anderson, Jr., who plays Jeff Koestler, a former Vietnam combat medic—it’s a nice of-the-era touch, continues with his ability to fool me into thinking he is an American. I like how Koestler irritates Chin Ho Kelly, who doesn’t care one whit that Koestler is supposed to be an heir to some fortune. Koestler refers to Chin as Charlie Chan…contemporary TV is sadly bereft of such straight-faced sarcasm.

I also liked how Danno can be sarcastic without batting a lash, as he does with Durkin in one scene. Danno also unloads with the sarcasm in the office scene. “He doesn’t seem to be able to cut it in the big world out there; keeps bouncing back to his rich old granddaddy. His mother is into her sixth marriage[…]..he might get a little confused around Father’s Day.” If Williams keeps up this level of snark, he could share office space with Luther Gillis!

Gail Strickland (Forbes) is best known by me from her M*A*S*H episode in which she was a serious boozeaholic.

Luther Adler (Charles Ogden) was far too memorable as the Vashon patriarch to have shown up after his epic role there, but he’s a welcome presence.

Danielle—no surname—plays reporter Evvy Bernstein, who comes on bright-eyed and bushy-tailed: “I’m Evvy Bernstein, Star Bulletin. Remember me? I’m doing color on this robbery. I’m the paper’s art expert. That means everybody knows less than me.” These days, know-it-all Evvy would be working for an online rag like Vice.

The lengthy pursuit cue which begins at the 21:46 mark is superb Five-0 music scoring. Ms. Forbes wears a hip outfit. I also like the MidMod bank which she and Ogden exit. I’d like to believe Hawaii looks just like it is in Five-0 and MPI, until I realize it probably doesn’t.

My Rating: 7/10

Small Witness, Large Crime

Ivan, my Season 7 files are all mixed up.

I watched S07Ep09 today but it was actually episode 17. Gonna be confusing.

Was pretty good.

The story of the little "Menehune" witnessing the hit.

I've said before I love how the show wasn't shy about spotlighting the Hawaiian culture, language, expressions, etc.

Side note: My cats are all Hawaiian names. And one is Menehune (Mene for short). I know, I know, my ramblings and little stories do bore some but I do enjoy it and can't help myself. :P :P :P

Anyways, the infighting between the two good sides was interesting. The tug-o-war.

Ms. Frances thinking McGarrett was only out to get young offenders and him setting her straight and her realizing her mistake. That he only wanted to protect him.

Arnold Hubbard (Bert Convy) rolled over a bit too easy.

Was fun the little Moki had a hand in nailing the bad guy.

Edit: Forgot to mention (have I ever mentioned my bad memory?)

Love the closing lines:
“Sure makes a difference doesn’t it.”
“What makes a difference.”
“Papa”

True in the 70s. True today.

MPI: Elizabeth Smith, Tommy Fujiwara, Douglas Mossman

We saw flashes of the cultured McGarrett earlier too, most notably in "Highest Castle, Deepest Grave" where he falls in love with the woman in the painting. But yes he did get more culture as he got older. :D
Koestler refers to Chin as Charlie Chan…contemporary TV is sadly bereft of such straight-faced sarcasm.
Oh no we can't have that today. Politically incorrect. How I loathe that word and the whole idea behind it. :x You're not allowed to have a good chuckle anymore, lest ye reveal yourself to be some sort of monster in the eyes of others. I still remember over on the Knight Rider IMDB board a few years back someone getting terribly offended because Michael referred to his 2 Asian karate attackers as the "eggroll brothers". To me that means absolutely nothing. A joke that produces maybe a slight chuckle or just a smile. But to someone else it's something terribly offensive. Go figure. I guess simple concepts like "humor" or "levity" don't exist for some. Everything has to be screened through some type of made-up PC filter. I'm Ukrainian and if someone referred to 2 Ukrainians as the "pierogie brothers" I'd be the first to chuckle. Wouldn't offend me in the slightest. But I guess it all depends on how you were raised and whether you've been brainwashed by the PC police.
The lengthy pursuit cue which begins at the 21:46 mark is superb Five-0 music scoring.
That's a great piece by Morton Stevens! Also the piece that plays at the opening during the theft! As I said earlier, Jack Lord liked using Stevens to score the episodes he himself directed.
I’d like to believe Hawaii looks just like it is in Five-0 and MPI, until I realize it probably doesn’t.
To me it does once you get out of Waikiki and Honolulu. Well, actually some parts of Honolulu you can still find buildings that are largely untouched and entire neighborhoods that have seen little change. The one that immediately comes to mind is the apartment building from "Secret Witness" where Cindy Williams and her baby were taken hostage by the hitman. It looks exactly as it did in 73/74 - down to the paint color, everything. I really got a kick out of it, as I always do when I find locations unchanged! When I walked up to it and started snapping pictures there were some folks on the balcony who probably thought I'd been out in the sun too long, wondering why I'm taking pics of their building like it's the Arizona Memorial or something. But mostly I get the feel for the REAL Hawaii, the unchanged Hawaii, out in the boonies. :) As you travel along Kalanianaole Hwy along the windward side of the island and watch the waves crashing against the rocks and the turquoise waters of the Pacific, when you gaze upon the beauty of the Ko'olau mountain range and the blue sky with fluffy white clouds drifting by, when you see shacks along the road or simple houses sitting on the water, and the rest of the flora and fauna that's the Hawaii of yesterday for me. That stuff doesn't change. Even Robin's Nest and the Waimanalo area evokes that period of yesterday that Honolulu and glitzy Waikiki don't. Landmarks like the Makapu'u Lighthouse, Koko Head Crater, Hanauma Bay, Rabbit Island, Makai Pier, Diamond Head and the tunnel entrance, etc. just remind you of the days when you used to see all this on your rabbit-ear antenna TV. :D

Ok, jumping ahead I see. :D

I like this episode. I think I liked it more when I first saw it because I always liked the "killer out to get the witness" types of stories. It's just that after several viewings I realize it isn't as strong as "Secret Witness" or some of the earlier ones like "Deathwatch" or "Thanks for the Honeymoon". But it's still very good. The addition of the "menehune" character was something different this time around. And cute! :) Elizabeth Smith as the lady whose donuts (or milk was it?) the little guy steals is always a joy to watch! She just embodies the mumu-wearing big Hawaiian woman like no one else! :D She's also always very outspoken and loud in all her appearances LOL. Bert Convy and France Nuyen each make a second appearance on the show. France would make one more. And does anyone else get a kick out of the fact that John Kerry plays the hitman??  First he tries to kill a menehune, then he runs for President??? Shame on him! :P

You have a cat named "Menehune"?? :) Does that mean you're familiar with this word? I first heard it in this episode and don't think I ever heard it again.

The score is by Harry Geller who mostly plays that sweet, innocent "menehune" theme throughout. It works just fine in that context. But the score as a whole is nowhere near as memorable or suspenseful as what he composed for "I'll Kill 'Em Again".

Yes. Familiar.
Grewing up going to Hawai'i every year picked up a lot of words.

Our cats are
Duke Kahanamoku
Kona Kākini (Socks)
Kimo Koa 'Ino (Storm Warrior)
and Menehune

Ironically, Menehune is the fat overweight one in the house. Not so little. :P

I see. Sounds like your Menehune cat is the equivalent of big burly dudes named "Tiny".

By the way, how did you guys manage to travel to Hawaii every year? Especially back then, in the 80s? Your family must have been loaded. :D And how did you end up in the Bahamas anyway? I'd trade places with you in a sec! Can't stand this rainy jungle anymore, pacing back and forth around the bamboo cage. :x

Yeah, just lucky.

Parents honeymooned in Honolulu. Fell in love with Hawaii.

Bought a month Maui condo pre-construction in 1976.

We still have it 45 years later.

My Grandparents retired in the Bahamas in the 90s and we just kinda ended up down here. Little house on a canal.

Ring of Life

A weak episode IMHO.

Don Knight (my MPI) did a good job but just didn’t like the episode much. Can’t put my finger on it.
