This scene has always perplexed me, as well. Selleck is clearly driving, as it is one continuous shot, and with the car passing on the other side of the road just as he comes out of his power slide, it is quite dangerous! With all those horses, and shifting into 2nd gear off of a dirt surface, it wouldn't be that hard to over-correct (or under-correct) and veer into the other lane!
Now I know that the 308 handles better than a cougar climbing a mountain, but, still, even if Selleck is a good driver, that is a surprising take. Gutsy!
I wouldn't be surprised if Selleck, probably just a month or two away from handyman work (and six failed pilots), was begging the director to let him do the scene himself! I can just see him now, "Put me in there. I can do it!"
