I've been watching since '80 and I just noticed this.

This scene has always perplexed me, as well. Selleck is clearly driving, as it is one continuous shot, and with the car passing on the other side of the road just as he comes out of his power slide, it is quite dangerous! With all those horses, and shifting into 2nd gear off of a dirt surface, it wouldn't be that hard to over-correct (or under-correct) and veer into the other lane!

Now I know that the 308 handles better than a cougar climbing a mountain, but, still, even if Selleck is a good driver, that is a surprising take. Gutsy!

I wouldn't be surprised if Selleck, probably just a month or two away from handyman work (and six failed pilots), was begging the director to let him do the scene himself! I can just see him now, "Put me in there. I can do it!" :)
Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!

From the looks of that scene MPI could have ended before it even got started. I always thought that when they did driving stunts like that, the crew blocked off the roadway for several blocks (except for other stunt drivers), as we saw in the beginning of "Echoes of the Mind" where we saw the crew member at the bottom of the screen run across the road beofre the Porsche comes racing down the road. I know there were driving scenes that did incorporate normal traffic, but this was a fairly risky driving stunt as James described. So, was the car that passed Magnum as he was peeling out a stunt driver or some bystander who just happened to drive by at that exact moment?
The answer is obvious, old man. Logic is irrelevant. It's simply Tropical Madness. (J.Q. Higgins)
