Really?!? I have never paid for an autograph. And I would never pay!
That said, I would never buy one from an auction site either. An autograph to me is something personal, just for me, so ideally it should also have my name on too! Like Tom's says "To Wayne". That to me is a proper personalised autograph. What good is it to me if it says to Suzie and my name isn't Suzie???

I go to a lot of conventions (horror cons, mostly) and they can be quite expensive. In the early 90s, it was $5 for an autograph and now it's $20 or more. I don't normally get autographs anymore, I mostly go for the social aspects, since I have a lot of friends who also go. It's kind of frustrating, but for some actors it's their bread and butter, so I can't complain. Lots of my friends just love it. It's really the interaction they enjoy the most, but it's so awkward if you don't buy something.
That said, I paid about $20 for an autograph of an actor I love who is now deceased (David Warbeck) on eBay. It was ruined in a flood and I was heartbroken. That one was important to me...
I think it's SO beyond cool that Selleck sent this.

Didn't someone at some point mention that Larry Manetti was at a convention with a table charging for his autograph. (please correct me if I'm wrong)
Must be tough to be a well-known actor without an opportunity to practice your craft. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to capitalize on what you've got. Writing a book (like Larry did) is pretty smart.

"How fiendishly deceptive of you Magnum. I could have sworn I was hearing the emasculation of a large rodent."

I did "signings" when I designed for Harley-Davidson, some times people would bring in huge box's of my stuff wanting it all signed. I never charged for anything, no matter how little or how much, heck I was happy they liked it enough to even buy it!
It's a real kick to do signings, the only bummer is when no body shows up wanting your autograph.
