Thought this one was pretty entertaining.

The crazy main bad guy Karl was good. Little over-the-top but good.

McGarrett negotiating and trying to deal with him was good too.

I loved the Koko head shooting location.

This used to be tied with "Though the Heavens Fall" as my favorite for the season. Butt (sorry, wrong thread ) on my last watch it actually fell out of my top 5. For some reason I had a hard time enjoying it. The bad guy Karl (Marx?) was waaaaay over the top!! The crazy revolutionary angle has been done before and much better in previous seasons. His constant ranting and raving at McG over the police radio grew tiresome. I liked the actor Cal Bellini more in season 11's "A Distant Thunder" (the Nut-zi episode lol) where he played the candidate Bobby Tamara who was the target of the neo-Nazi group (they ran over his dog for crying out loud! ). Here he's just a generic raving mad revolutionary. No good acting here. I do agree with you that the filming location for the standoff was nice. Good scenery. Except it's not Koko Head. It's the ridge above Hanauma Bay, which sadly is no longer accessible to either drive or walk. Everything used to be accessible back in the day. Today everything is blocked and gated off. Wimps!

I dunno... maybe if I saw it again I would like it more. I typically like hostage/standoff stories. But it just didn't work for me last time I saw it. There were some cool chase and shootout scenes early on with the police cars. Not surprising since the director here is again stunt coordinator Beau Van Den Ecker.

Right. Koko Crater. I wrote Koko Head.

Nope, that's not it either. Koko Crater would be the inside of the actual crater of Koko Head (the one that people climb up those steep railroad ties). This is the ridge above Hanauma Bay. Not sure what it's called. Hanauma Bay is across from Koko Head/Crater.

I’m no expert on Hawaii’s geology.

I do know that a “head”, or “headland”, as in Diamond Head, would be used to describe the slope that drops to the sea. By definition though, a headland typically projects out more into the water, as in a promontory. Think of a bay and a headland as opposites.

Diamond Crater, or “cone” more specifically in vulcanology, would describe the entire geological form.

Caveat: This all comes from memory of what my wife taught in her geoscience classes, but that’s been quite a few years.

I also always use Koko Head and Koko Crater interchangeably, as being the entire formation. But in my mind I always thought Koko Head was the actual highest point of that entire formation, hence "Head" which would mean the highest point (to me at least). So that would be the summit or the scenic point that folks climb (and which I climbed) and hang out up there and take pics and videos from up there. So then the "crater" would be the actual hollow thing inside this formation - the interior.

But that's neither here nor there because none of this has anything to do with Hanauma Bay, which is across the way - on the other side of Kalanianaole Hwy.

Jack Lord with gray highlights in his hair? Wasn't this filmed just around the time season 12 was wrapping? I don't remember this much gray hair on him. Unless he was dying his hair for the show.

First reaction (first 30 minutes) was thinking "Noooo, not another silly supernatural episode".

So much was lame.

It was somewhat saved by the explanation and last 15 minutes once they found out he was adopted and that his ESP (or whatever) were actual memories.

Not a very good episode though. Fair rating: 5.5/10

I agree it's not a very good episode but I actually always liked (even as a kid) those flashbacks that he kept having. Always found them creepy. Limbs going up and down in his mind. That kinda thing can freak you out! I think even as a kid I knew it meant something (because I knew Five-O wasn't a supernatural show, which was never my thing **) so it was a creepy little mystery for me, as I watched to see what it all meant. I liked the revelation when we find out about the shack and what happened inside. I definitely prefer this to those horoscope episodes. Don Ray's score is pretty good too and works well with those flashback scenes. Eh, maybe it's not that bad after all. I guess it's kind of a middling season 12 episode, overall.

** I still remember one summer sometime in the mid-90s running into the house (after playing with friends outside) at around 1:30pm and turning on our local FOX channel (it's channel 29 here in Philly) to catch an episode of Five-O, as was my daily custom. I think MPI followed at 2:30 but I wasn't into the show back then. Anyway, you can imagine my horror when instead of that Hawaiian opening wave rolling across my screen... I get "Spaaace... the final frontier". And for the rest of that summer they were showing reruns of STAR TREK instead. Oh I was pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hated anything STAR TREK related and still do. What a bunch of malarkey!

I think MPI followed at 2:30 but I wasn't into the show back then. Anyway, you can imagine my horror when instead of that Hawaiian opening wave rolling across my screen... I get "Spaaace... the final frontier". And for the rest of that summer they were showing reruns of STAR TREK instead. Oh I was pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hated anything STAR TREK related and still do. What a bunch of malarkey!

Hey Ivan, your introduction to Hawaii Five-O was as a child? My introduction to both Magnum pi and The Rockford Files was as a child too, though a decade earlier. Rockford was as reruns like you saw H5-O, and MPI was as it aired live. I think those experiences have a profound nostalgic effect. I would have called MPI my favorite show when I was 10-15 years old, but I grew to love Rockford more as I matured. I didn’t watch much H5-O until I saw some reruns in college, and I enjoy it, it’s just not the perfect show you love to claim.

I find it fascinating that such shows can have such a nostalgic hold on us. I think the mass airing of older series in the last couple of decades and now streaming has made me rethink some of my favorites from the past. As I have rewatched so many shows from my childhood, some have aged very well surprisingly, others very poorly. I know you have mentioned The A-Team and Knight Rider on the forum. I watched them live in the day, but find them almost unwatchable today. H5-O holds up much better as does Rockford, and Harry-O, a series I didn’t find until about 15 years ago. It’s a funny thing, nostalgia.

I find both KNIGHT RIDER and THE A-TEAM still very rewatchable even today. Ok, maybe THE A-TEAM more than KNIGHT RIDER. The former was wittier and better acted by its leads. Lots of funny zingers in there and I still love to see those cars and trucks flipping through the air. Some great stunt work there!

But other shows that I loved watching during my early teen years in the 90s (during their first run) like RENEGADE (with Lorenzo Lamas) or KUNG FU: THE LEGEND CONTINUES have not aged well at all. RENEGADE was a syndicated show produced by Stephen J. Cannell. Back then it was probably my favorite out of Cannell's stable of shows but today I'd watch just about any other Cannell show over that one. It's interesting how shows affect us. KNIGHT RIDER is cheesy but there's still some kind of magic there. RENEGADE is cheesy but has no magic. Just a lousy actor playing a biker on his Harley. But I think the decade/time-frame also helps. KNIGHT RIDER is from that early 80s period which I really love. Whereas RENEGADE is from the early-to-mid 90s which is a time period that I watch almost nothing from. I did as a kid. But as a grown-up that time period just has zero appeal for me. Lots of syndicated actions shows shot in Canada which I loved as a kid. But not today. Ok, maybe STREET JUSTICE (with Carl Weathers) and COBRA (with Michael Dudikoff) are exceptions. But even those I can only take in small doses. But you've probably never even heard of those.
