A good example of watching a show from 40-50 years ago meaning the story has been done a million times since (was probably very original at the time) but a good episode and probably original at the time.

Good scene when Congressman Carr denies David Chung was the bad guy in McGarrett's office because his wife was snatched.

Like seeing the War Memorial.

Yep, this is definitely a better episode than the previous "Longshore" one. Beauty pageants, politics, and blackmail. That's alright in my book. David Birney is well cast as the politician with an image to protect. He just looks like the Washington type. Shades of Kennedy there I think. Not much else to say about it. Nothing great but not bad either.

What aspect did you think was original at the time? The feminism of the Shannon Wilcox character?

I reread what I posted this morning and it was worded so poorly even I don't understand it. Pre-coffee maybe.

Was trying to say an episode dealing with drugging and framing and blackmailing a politician must of been much more original when it aired in the late-70s.

It's a common story now (done a million times in various forms) but I try to view the episodes as if it were that time were it would have been very original..

Ah, I see. I wouldn't say it was too original at the time though. I remember shows in the 60s (especially westerns like BONANZA) that dealt with politicians being blackmailed or blackmailing others. In fact BONANZA had quite a few episodes like that. I think it's just because there have been way more political shows in the last decade or so than in the past (WEST WING, 24, HOUSE OF CARDS, SCANDAL, MADAM SECRETARY, DESIGNATED SURVIVOR, etc.) that it seems like political scandals are everywhere on TV. We've become way too political as a country and it's reflected in what is offered to us on our TVs. It's a shame really because I can't watch anything political on TV anymore. I used to be a huge fan of 24 and politics played a big part on the show and that was also a big draw for me as well, in addition to the suspense element of the show of course! But I guess back then it was more of a novelty. Something new. Nowadays everyone is doing politics and I can't stand it anymore. That's why I reverted strictly to the shows of yesteryear. Less politics, more "everyday" stuff that we can identify with. I'd rather follow McGarrett or Magnum around Hawaii doing their investigative work and catching bad guys than watching political maneuvering and back-stabbing that modern TV offers. I get enough of that on the news.

Yes, it's very important for people to learn and know about the Holodomor. Everyone knows about the Jewish Holocaust but so few know or hear about the Ukrainian one. Just as massive and horrific. Thank you for teaching about this.

Yep, those "Red Trains" took away all the people's belongings, took all of their grain away, leaving them to starve to death. They also took people away to the gulags. Whole families. My mother's entire family was almost taken away from their village. They were already on the train. My mom wasn't even born yet. But she had 9 other siblings who were already alive and whose lives would have forever been changed.

Putin is still pissed that Ukraine has renamed all of its Soviet-themed streets and names with those reflecting Ukrainian heritage, something that happened soon after the breakup of the Soviet Union and Ukrainian Independence in 1991. And every time a statue of Stepan Bandera goes up in Ukraine he can't help but boil with rage. I can't stand the arrogance of someone like this who thinks he can meddle in another country's affairs and dictate to us what statues we should or shouldn't erect. Unbelievable!! Bandera fought for Ukrainian independence and killed lots of Soviets. Good!

Perhaps the biggest disagreement in all the recent negotiations has been Putins insistence on a promise that Ukraine not be allowed to join NATO. It is his red line, excuse the unintended pun, and I agree, it is stunningly arrogant to force this issue. That is a decision to be made by the Ukrainian people and their leaders, and NATO member nations.

Absolutely! That's arrogance at its worst!!! So Ukraine, a sovereign nation, does not have a say in whether it wants to join NATO or not. Putin does. He speaks for the Ukrainian people. Of course if he annexes all of Ukraine (not just Crimea) to be a part of Mother Russia then that simplifies things for him, doesn't it? But then won't he still share a border with a NATO member? Poland. And Slovakia. So he'll still have NATO troops on his border. It's all just an excuse to reach into Ukraine and keep it under his grip. Out of all the former Soviet republics Ukraine was always the most important for Russia. Ukraine is so rich in resources. Russia is just one big barren and frozen landscape.

My understanding is that Ukraine has some of the best farmland in the whole region, perhaps all of Europe, plus significant mineral and petroleum deposits. I also think part of Putins goal is simply restoring the once large influence Moscow had before the collapse of the Soviet Union. This is about regional hegemony at a very basic level.

This is true. Ukraine has very fertile soil, called "chornozem" (which means "black soil"). This is why Ukraine is often called the "bread basket of Europe". With an abundance of other resources. It's also pretty much the largest country land-wise in all of Europe. This is something that many for some reason don't realize. My neighbor asked me what does Putin want with a small country like Ukraine. I'm guessing he hasn't looked at the map recently. Maybe compared to Russia it's small (what country isn't?) but compared to other European countries it's the largest of the bunch, larger than France or Spain.

You have experienced a very common American trait… poor geography knowledge. I have experienced this so frequently in my life, and not just with my students. They’re still learning, so I have hope. I’m talking about neighbors, friends, and even colleagues in other departments. I’m not at all surprised your neighbor made that comment… sadly.

I try to include lots of geography lessons in my history courses to make up for this. I love maps and include them as much as I can in my curriculum.

Needless to say my middle school Social Studies teacher loved me! I was the only one in the class who genuinely seemed to love the subject and to point things out on the map. She had one of those pull-down maps attached to the blackboard. Of course that was my favorite class. I always hated Math and Science. Social Studies (history, geography) was my thing! Still is.

I have lots of maps on my classroom walls and I always keep an eye out for kids that walk up to look at them. A surprising number do and I quickly ask if they have any questions which the often do. Those students typically do pretty well in my classes. You can see genuine curiosity in students, pretty easily actually. I don’t ever worry about those kids. I know they’ll do well in life. It’s the disaffected kids that seem interested in almost nothing that concern me. Sometimes it just makes me so sad thinking about what they’ll never learn in life once formal schooling ends.

Yes, it's sad to see kids who are just not into anything in life. Their life must feel so empty. No wonder depression is so high among kids. I don't ever remember being depressed as a kid. I often wonder what does a kid have to be depressed about? My childhood seemed so carefree and worry-free. Parents take care of everything. All that a kid has to do, aside from school, is have fun and play. But I suppose a lot depends on what kind of home you're raised in. If a kid dreads returning home to his/her parents (for whatever reason) that can certainly mess with their psyche and also rob them of any interest in anything life has to offer. Man, this is a downer of a subject to discuss. But I suppose there may also be kids that come from normal homes and for whatever reason don't have an interest in anything. Wonder why that is?

Yep, I'd be in that age range. I'm 41.

Yep, I'd say it's about on par with "The Silk Trap". Fairly solid episode. George Grizzard is pretty good as the Fed, and especially sympathetic by the end. Sad end for him. Charles Cioffi is good as always. I love his 2 names - Jack Fabian/Fred Jackman. Cool alias! I think Lyle Bettger plays Jonathan Kaye in this one. Can't remember if this was his first one or if he was in the previous one too. I know he did a couple as Kaye. I think this was the end for Bill Edwards playing Kaye.

Yep, I like this one too. Among the better episodes of the season actually. I like the surfing stuff and the competition and the scenes on the cliffs were suspenseful. I like that we're out of Honolulu for this one. More outdoorsy/beach action. This is probably Kimo Kahoano's biggest role on the show. He did good. Yep, that's the Beverly Hills Cop girl - Lisa Eilbacher!

Mr. Mike is confused by the line "your macho is bleeding". Or at least he used to be.

Yep, that's the funny thing. Hawaii Five-O will not be seen this week. Instead we're doing a Special Presentation to the tune of Morton Stevens' Hawaii Five-O music. That particular snippet of music is actually from the pilot episode "Cocoon". I think it's called "Call to Danger".
