You Don't See Many Pirates These Days

Not bad. Okay episode. Nothing spectacular.

"No need to know" reminded me of something.

I liked Stavrik. Cool as a cucumber.

I see Charlie has taken over for Che.

I always like references to Maui. There was even a little stock clip of old Front Street in Lahaina. Way it looked when I was a kid going there.

Best thing about the episode? McGarrett's Aloha shirt.

Image

Pretty standard story but enjoyable enough.

MPI: Robert Apisa, Joe Moore, Beau Vanden Ecker, Lord James Blears, Josie Over, Don Pomes, Ed Fernandez
Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

Yep, I do like McG's Aloha shirt here. :D Never took note of it before. It's certainly different from the typical MPI Aloha shirts.

As for the episode yep it's pretty standard fare. Nothing special here. The ship hijacking story should have been more exciting than it was. I liked "Up the Rebels" more. Like Stephen Boyd in the previous one, we get another high profile name here - Rossanno Brazzi as Zeno Stavrik, the Greek shipping tycoon. He was "cool" but didn't have all that much to do or that much screen time. Just a man pulling the strings in the background.

I see you noticed that Che Fong is gone. I believe Harry Endo's last appearance was in "Up the Rebels". Also gone is Doc Bergman and John Manicote. Season 9 was their last season. Jenny (the Five-O secretary) was gone after season 8. Not sure if you noticed. She was replaced by a rotating roster of secretaries - Lani, Luana, etc. who weren't even played by the same actresses either.

The Cop on the Cover

Really liked this episode so, of course, it's trashed on IMDb.

Framing Joe Moala for apparently no reason. Moe Keale did a good job.

I like the interplay between McGarrett and Terri O'Brien. Was fun to me.

Confucius? No McGarrett.

Funny Josie Over was literally back-to-back episodes.

MPI: Henry Darrow, Connie Kissinger, Rodney Philip Aiu, Jo Pruden, Moe & Josie.

IMdb doesn't seem to agree with you on quite a bit.

For me it's more of the same in terms of quality, like the previous 2 episodes. Not bad but not great. Good, I suppose.

Another big name from "Old Hollywood" - Jean Simmons. Spartacus, The Robe, Elmer Gantry, etc. She was good enough as the annoying feminist Terri O'Brien who bucked horns with "the man". I really liked the Confucius line too! I agree that Moe Keale was good. The music score is credited to Richard Markowitz (who did a lot of the WILD WILD WEST scores, including the main theme) but the cool piece that plays during the money drop on the bus I believe is by Morton Stevens. It's used extensively in the next episode whose score is credited to Morton Stevens.

The Friends of Joey Kalima

Liked it a lot.

There's a pattern developing here again.

Season 10 episodes 1 & 2 didn't like much. 3 & 4 I really did. Lighter episodes?

Good local Hawaiian angle with Kalima and his adopted O'hana and his role in the community.

Good back-n-forth throughout with McGarrett and the IA officer.

The tunneling thing is a bit overdone but oh well.

Enjoyed the episode.

Weird they changed Charlie so fast especially consider how much Josie Over was used.

MPI: Elaine Giftos, Seth Sakai, Kimo Kahoano, Jimmy Borges, Ernest Chan, Brian Fong, Kwan Hi Lim, Elizabeth Smith (love her)

Yeah this one is pretty good. I liked it more than the previous 2 and it's about on par with the first one ("Up the Rebels"). It's funny because you liked the whole "ohana" bit and didn't care for the tunneling caper, while I didn't care much for "ohana" (reminds me of the new Five-0 with all its "ohana" nonsense) and really liked the tunneling caper. Love the music by Morton Stevens that plays during the tunneling scenes. Really catchy! It's in my head as I type this and I haven't seen this episode in years.

You know, you may actually really like these last 3 seasons. By this point the series' glory days were behind and season 10 started the downward spiral. But as a MPI fan if you like the lighter stories then this stuff might just be for you. Also the time frame of these episodes (late 70s) is getting pretty close to the start of MPI's run. We're a whole decade later here than when the show began (1968).

The tunnel was good for bringing all the elements together.

The lava dust angle was cool.
new Five-0 with all its "ohana" nonsense
Funny, the instant I read this I knew exactly what you meant. They did overkill it.

That sounds good.

I never watched the new H5-O beyond the first couple of episodes. I know ohana refers to extended family and even those not blood-related but have become close to the family. Multigenerational families living together under the same roof are also very common and part of Hawaiian culture, and ohana. A friend of mine from Lahaina also described it to me in terms of small towns not on Oahu. Ohana is the closeness of small town communities to him. He attended UCLA and we met through friends. He couldn’t wait to get back to the small town lifestyle and out of the LA metropolis.

So I’m not really understanding what “ohana nonsense” refers to. What was the new show depicting?

Oh, everything about the new show was about "ohana". I started getting nauseous just hearing that word. Everything from the stupid bromance/dumb "car-guments" between Steve and Danno, the Five-O team, the fat shrimp guy Kamekona (who was just about the only funny thing about the show), the same never-ending soap opera arcs with the main characters, the cutesy endings with the gang drinking beers on the beach, etc. They kept hammering it in that this is all about "ohana". I'm like PUHLEESE, I'm here to watch a cop show, not all these "ohana" subplots. Yeah we get it. Y'all are tight. Ohana. Yeah, okay. Now, how about devoting as much time to the actual cases/weekly crimes as you do to this ohana nonsense. Gee, maybe the show would be more watchable. Maybe the writing for the actual weekly cases would be tighter and more interesting, like on the old show. Instead of the same old trope of (a) a crime is committed, (b) the super-duper smart computer spits out a list of suspects (seemingly out of nowhere), (c) none of the suspects is the culprit, (d) then waste a whole lot of time on various "ohana" subplots, (e) then in the final 5 minutes of the show we remember that we still have a case to solve so we somehow find the real culprit who of course was someone you never suspected. Repeat this same cycle week after week.

Was just overused.

They got their Hawaiian term they liked and repeated it ad nauseam.

Seems like it was fairly mediocre writing in general.

While I don’t agree with Ivan that the the original H-5O was the best show ever, because he’s clearly wrong as it was actually The Rockford Files, which Selleck knew well enough to appear on, twice, while the opposite isn’t true, I do enjoy many episodes of the series, and have also really enjoyed following both of your disagreements. How’s that for a run-on sentence!

Actually Selleck begged Jack Lord to appear on Five-O (because he obviously knew it was the best show ever) but Jack turned him down. So then Selleck resigned to appearing on that other show with Jimmy whats-his-name. But Tommy always regretted not appearing on the most revered show of all time, even referring to McGarrett and Five-O on his own show. :) Tommy even wanted Magnum to drive a black Mercury Grand Brougham but Bellisario nixed that idea. Tommy even wanted Higgins to be named Danno Quayle Williams.

Best show in history was Magnum, P.I.

You both deserve the bamboo cage for this.

But somehow Ivan being inside the cage doesn't look right. Who's outside then? T.Q.? With his pistol and non-Soviet hat? :D
