Yep, I like this one too. It's on par with "Turkey Shoot at Makapuu" for me. I mean this one is basically a sequel to that one. But surprisingly, as I recall, you did not care for "Turkey Shoot". But you like this one. Both are heavy on hang gliding and pretty Lee Purcell plays the same character (Molly Taggart) in both. Both even feature the same creep played by Chuck-Chuck Akamine. He played Tonker in "Turkey" and Joko in this one. All in all, a solid end to the 9th season. Much better than the 8th season finale. How did this season fare for you? Any burnout yet?
Yep, book me for burnout Danno.

Funny you asked. I was thinking this ending season 9.

So... many... episodes...

Enjoying the ride though.
Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

Yep, you have now gone one season more than the number of MPI seasons. :D

Personally I enjoy season 9 more than season 8. More "excellent" episodes in this one. But starting with season 10 you should see a pretty significant drop in quality. :? Or maybe you won't. :) I think the last 3 seasons in some ways feel more like MPI due to their more laid back nature and less gripping drama. There was a serious push around this time for TV networks to cut back on the violence. As a result a lot of those Five-O episodes lack the verve of the earlier seasons, feel repetitive, or a bit on the stale side. The cast also starts to look tired and just going through the motions. Jack Lord's age also begins to show. Then in season 11 he ditches his suits and begins wearing those hideous late 70s disco leisure suits.

Anyway, here is my season 9 ranking. Get yours ready!

1. A Capitol Crime
2. Target - A Cop
3. The Bells Toll at Noon
4. Man in a Steel Frame
5. Blood Money is Hard to Wash
6. Elegy in a Rain Forest
7. Tour De Force, Killer Aboard
8. The Last of the Great Paperhangers
9. To Die in Paradise
10. Nine Dragons
11. Assault on the Palace
12. Double Exposure
13. To Kill a Mind
14. Practical Jokes Can Kill You
15. Yes, My Deadly Daughter
16. Dealer's Choice... Blackmail
17. Heads, You're Dead
18. Oldest Profession - Latest Price
19. Requiem for a Saddle Bronc Rider
20. Ready, Aim...
21. Man on Fire
22. Let Death Do Us Part
23. See How She Runs (or the adventures of Osiris, Willow, Rainbow, Phoenix, Karma, Rhyme, Cassiopeia and Aquarius - GAG!!)

Was surprised almost out of your top ten.

On to Season 10.

Nah, it's far from being #1 for the season for me. I'm actually surprised that was your favorite. I thought you liked it, not loved it. While it may be one of the best Wo Fat episodes (though I still prefer "Cocoon" and "And a Time to Die") the season just offered many stronger episodes for me personally.

Up the Rebels

Wow. Reviews are high on IMDb.

I didn't think it was that great. Found it a tad boring actually.

Good opening heist.

Stephen Boyd played a good Irish terrorist (Priest). Heartless taking out his accomplices and doing anything for his cause.

I found Casey Fogarty (Elayne Heilveil) kinda annoying.

I liked the tug boat ending (ironically it's what reviewers didn't like haha).

You said be honest.

MPI: Edward Sheehan, John Stalker, Kathy Paulo

STEPHEN BOYD!! MESSALA from BEN-HUR!! One of the greatest films ever made!!!!!!

You're right about Stephen Boyd. He was very good as "Father" Daniel Costigan (Sean O'Roarke). Always enjoy seeing him in this role. And it helps greatly that he's a real Irish actor and not someone attempting a bad Irish accent. It's sad that he passed away before this episode even aired. This was the last thing he did, before collapsing on the golf course of a heart attack at the young age of just 45. Honestly though he looked older than 45 in this episode. More like 55.

Unfortunately Boyd is really the only standout thing about this episode. It's not a bad episode by any means but also far from excellent, great, or even very good. It's a good representation of most of season 10. Not bad but not great either. And this is actually among the better episodes of the season. I do like the Irish angle ("The Troubles") here and again it's Boyd who makes it all work. For fans of MPI's "No Need to Know" (like myself) this episode might be of interest for that reason. Of course your mileage may vary. I agree that Casey Fogarty was an annoying character. Someone once said they found her attractive or sexy. I sure don't. Annoying, naive, clingy, whiny, etc.

Good Morton Stevens score too, especially the part at the end where McG in his Mercury is chasing Boyd's tugboat. A very catchy piece which plays a few times over the course of season 10.

Good news for those without access to Hawaii 5-0 on TV or thru having bought the series. Beginning January 21 the H & I Network
is going to run it. Hurrah, I won't be sitting here anymore jealously reading posts from such as Ivan about how good the series is.
I know where I will be a week from this friday, watching the two part opener. I can recall watching that when it originally
premiered, I was a kid and everybody was talking about it at school.

Great news for those like you who don't have access to the DVDs. I might check it out just as a curiosity but won't be watching. I prefer my DVD quality, with no commercials or cuts/edits.

Question - did you ever own a single season of this show on DVD? You sound like a big fan. They're so cheap these days, like $9 bucks a season that it's almost a sin not to own it. That's how much I spend for my lunch at the drive-thru. Eat it and it's gone. But these DVDs will be with you for a long time. I bought them as they came out and they were like $39 at the time and even then I thought it was a steal. To own the entire season (24 hours of entertainment) for just $39 bucks. Compare it to any new movie release on DVD where they charge you like $20 for just 2 hours of entertainment. These old shows that we love are super cheap these days.

Hi Ivan,
For the longest time Hawaii 5-0 and Combat had sky high prices for the DVD sets so I put them out of my mind. Then a year would go by and I'd check and they were still high.
I will have to check them out again. You seem happy with your set, can I ask you who put it out? I ask because years ago Roxbury put out the first 3 seasons(but not the 4th and
last season) of Route 66 and they had a lot of problems. Stuttering starts, grinding noises. SHOUT Factory then did a competent 4 season issue, so I tell people to avoid the
Roxbury ones even though you can find them for $6 in a supermarket bin.
Just an aside but around 3 years ago Me-TV ran Hawaii 5-0 for 4 months. I was floored - after not seeing it since the late 80's - by it's quality, especially a early episode
with Simon Oakland as a WW 2 vet(The Reunion), outstanding!
I don't know what CBS spent on the shows but it must have have been a packet, what we see on the screen is visually
one of the best ever! Check out that color. The writing, the acting, great guest stars!
I guess I am preaching to the choir here. You know what Ivan, you are 100% correct, I need to get the set.

I don't know when was the last time that you checked the prices but they've been around 10 bucks for probably 10 years now, especially the early seasons which of course are the best! That's dirt cheap, especially for an official release, not some bootleg copy. Here are some links:
https://www.amazon.com/Hawaii-Five-Seas ... 680&sr=8-3
https://www.amazon.com/Hawaii-Five-Seas ... TPC8&psc=1
https://www.amazon.com/Hawaii-Five-Seas ... WPSM&psc=1

These are the sets that I purchased as they came out. Of course they were like $39 when they first came out, which I still thought was a bargain considering the quality of the show and the audio/video itself. These are the Paramount releases which are known for their high quality. Picture and sound remastered, same as for MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and MANNIX on DVD. Same treatment. They look like they were filmed yesterday. So I can vouch for these. The only season that wasn't remastered (for whatever reason) was season 10, for which Paramount got a lot of backlash. But I think for the box sets that were released later season 10 was remastered.

You should definitely own these! :) At least the first 6 seasons.

Thank you so much for the information, Ivan. You are definitely one of the nice guys. I hope to nudge the family into getting me the DVD's for my birthday,
but like Baldrick from "Black Adder" I will need a cunning plan.
Meantime earlier today I mentioned to my buddy the Hawaii 5-0 set and he told me the streaming Peacock service was free on my Comcast, and that it had Hawaii 5-0.
So I watched the pilot film - now designated episodes 1 and 2 - again. That "cocoon water tank" scared the hell out of me when I watched the premiere back
on Sept. 20, 1968 and it still creeps me out a mere 54 years later. Peacock interrupts for ads promoting it's content, which you can't forward thru.
So getting the DVDs is still my preferred plan.

That still remains one of the best lines from the show!!!! LOVE IT!! :)

Right up there with "Don't you EVER call me COP. The name is McGarrett and the title is MISTER."
