To Kill a Mind

Good ol' Ormsbee is back and is as entertaining as ever.

I found the episode itself was kinda blah in general although kidnapping, murder and blackmail is always fun. :P

Good but not the best.

McGarrett booking the Doc AGAIN at the end was funny.

Lots of rehashed elements.

Pretty good episode though.

Liked the slimy mobster and the back-n-forth with McGarrett (he never would have trusted that horse).

Was also funny the scenes when they were following him around the Island.

Good plan to get close to McGarrett in the hospital (don't forget the medical-alert bracelet Jovanko DOH!).

MPI: Jim Demarest, Edward Sheehan, Tommy Fujiwara
Another great episode! I rank it at #5 for the season. While it's true that in some ways it's a rehash, particularly of season 7's "A Gun for McGarrett" (which also makes my top 5 for that season), it's still a crackling episode! In fact the bomb blowing up inside McGarrett's office and McG getting tossed over his desk is directly lifted from the earlier episode. Still doesn't take anything away from my enjoyment of this episode. But what really makes it work is the excellent performance by Dane Clark as the mobster Victor Jovanko (love that name!!). His back and forth with McG is some classic stuff and the Five-O crew bugging him (literally) everywhere he goes is just great. Love seeing Jovanko's exasperation growing as McG really gets under his skin! :D

Also really good was Terry Kiser (dead man Bernie in the Weekend at Bernie's movies) as Jovanko's stooge Augie. Their scenes together are great and Kiser is very good with his "bored and lazy" routine, as he seems both bored with following Jovanko's orders and following McG around. Loved him reaching for his notepad with his bare toes and taking a shot at McG with a stocking on his head.

MPI connection: You missed Terry Kiser/Augie. :P

Happy New Year!!!!!! :D

Requiem for a Saddle Bronc Rider

Not ranked high but I liked it even though rodeo/ranch stories ain't my thing partner.

Pretty simple story but executed nicely.

Bodies dumped at outset. Missing brother and girlfriend. Putting the pieces together from nothing.

Len Jessup was a creep.

Chin on the bus was funny.

P.S. Weird I missed Terry Kiser (Tran Quoc Jones - Dennis Redfield) earlier. Was well aware when viewing. Just forgot. I always remember him from Three's Company reruns as a kid for some reason.

Yep, Terry Kiser was probably one of the best guest stars on THREE'S COMPANY. He was great in both of his appearances! First as the jealous boyfriend (causing Jack to pretend he's dead) and then as the mobster who likes Jack's cooking. :)

This one doesn't get much praise but it's actually my favorite of the 3 Ormsbee episodes. Pat Hingle is great as always but I really like the Cold War/Soviet plot here. The idea of scattering pieces of "top-secret" Soviet wreckage along the shores of Oahu in order to pique the US Navy's interest and to get them to put these items together and plug them into "something" which will actually sabotage the US Navy's equipment is pretty clever. Ok, it's a bit far-fetched and confusing but the idea is still pretty cool. Plus as you mentioned you have a kidnapping along the way and a murder and Pauly Gardner! :D I also liked Mel Ferrer as the head bad guy - the Soviet spy master.

MPI: Let's not forget the Makai Research Pier, where a lot of the action takes place.

I guess this one is just okay in my book. I don't mind the rodeo/ranch stuff (certainly much better than MPI's "Adelaide") but I wish the story had a bit more oomph to it. More suspense. The flashbacks at the end are pretty effective and I also remember the scene with Chin on the bus being funny. The opening with the buckboard when the bodies are dumped I believe was shot right above Hanauma Bay. Jessup getting gored by the bull at the end was a fitting end for him!

See How She Runs

You get the dreaded "okay" with this one.

The story was alright I guess.

Kwan Hi Lim was funny as the Pepping Tom.

Image

Creepy "Jesus" (could they have tried harder?) and the cult was kinda weird but interesting.

I liked Babe and the ending was good.

MPI: Kwan Hi Lim, Roland Nip (no non-PC joke here haha), James McInerny, Roland Naauao, Jack Hisatake

Ok, this episode SUCKS! There you go. I think you're being way too kind to it. :P

Easily my worst episode of season 9. It used to be "Let Death Do Us Part" (the one with the flaky lady with the ouija board) but now it's definitely this one. Last time I saw it (when I got my season 9 DVD set) I had a really hard time sitting through it. It's funny that you found the cult "weird but interesting" because that's the part I HATED the most! Nothing remotely interesting about them for me. Those are the parts I really wanted to fast-forward through. I called this episode "The Adventures of Osiris, Willow, Rainbow, Phoenix, Karma, Rhyme, Cassiopeia and Aquarius". GAG!! I actually don't mind seeing counter-culture elements on Five-O. In fact that's what gave the early seasons (late 60s/early 70s) their appeal and it's a cool time capsule to look at. But this here was just too much. Such mawkish nonsense! I want the crime drama front and center, not this stuff.

The ONLY good thing about this one (which you noted) was Kwan Hi Lim as the peeping Tom! He really was funny! As well as his wife there next to him.

But the rest was crap.

Practical Jokes Can Kill You

I liked this one.

Strange meeting of two storylines works for me because it keeps me guessing.

I liked how Danno was easy on the prankster thieves.

Was kinda dumb the elaborate plan to extort a paraglider just to open a gate though.

I have an ability to ignore a lot of dumb stuff and just enjoy it. I'm not a nit-picky plot hole, continuity, too far-fetched Grinch when it comes to old TV shows. I let it slide.

Yep, I like this one too. It's on par with "Turkey Shoot at Makapuu" for me. I mean this one is basically a sequel to that one. But surprisingly, as I recall, you did not care for "Turkey Shoot". But you like this one. Both are heavy on hang gliding and pretty Lee Purcell plays the same character (Molly Taggart) in both. Both even feature the same creep played by Chuck-Chuck Akamine. He played Tonker in "Turkey" and Joko in this one. All in all, a solid end to the 9th season. Much better than the 8th season finale. How did this season fare for you? Any burnout yet?
