Excellent. Loved it.
The whole scam was well thought out.
Helen Hayes was great as Aunt Clara. From the start being quick on her toes when Mr. Miller was not Mr. Miller to her insertion into the sting.
The story was well done from start to finish.
Last scene didn't disappoint with nurse being undercover and the cute last exchange between Aunt Clara and McGarrett.
Cool seeing Charles Durning - I always think of Tootsie.
Ian Wolfe - Hirsch from WKRP (one of my favourite shows of all time).
MPI: No new ones I don't think.
Excellent. Loved it.

I always really enjoyed this episode too, and of course the chemistry between Helen Hayes and James MacArthur is quite natural!T.Q. wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 8:35 pm Retire in Sunny Hawaii... Forever

Yes, definitely one of the highlights of the season! Another light-hearted classic. Helen Hayes I believe was Emmy-nominated for this role (deservedly so). JMac must have had a blast acting on screen alongside his mother, a stage and screen legend. They had great chemistry together! Always a treat seeing Charles Durning too. He was great in everything. And Ian Wolfe just has this unforgettable face, a guy who's been in just about everything! From films in the 30s to television in the 80s. I remember him on CHEERS.T.Q. wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 8:35 pm Retire in Sunny Hawaii... Forever

I was about to say Helen Hayes was on MPI but then I remembered that I was thinking of either Mildred Natwick or Martha Scott in "Limited Engagement". Hayes and Natwick starred together in a short-lived 70s mystery show called THE SNOOP SISTERS. And Natwick herself later guest starred twice on FIVE-O - as an elderly snoopster type, similar to Hayes in this episode.

Years ago I saw a Snoop Sisters episode with Alice Cooper as a cult leader of some sort. I really enjoyed it. It was a very short-lived series but I think I’d like to find the episodes now that you reminded me about it.IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 1:04 amYes, definitely one of the highlights of the season! Never saw an episode. I just know that it was very short-lived, just a few episodes. Liked both actresses though, both appearing on Five-O.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
I found that they’re all available on YouTube. Apparently there was a two-hour TV movie and just four 90-minute “episodes” in the rotating NBC Mystery of the Week. Mildred Natwick won an Emmy and Helen Hayes was nominated for their performances. It seems it was inspired by another TV movie called Do Not Fold, Spindle or Mutilate with both of them, Sylvia Sidney (also of MPI), and Myrna Loy! I’m very intrigued.IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Tue Oct 12, 2021 10:40 pmNever saw an episode. I just know that it was very short-lived, just a few episodes. The same mystery series had a show called Tenafly, starring James McEachin, that I’ve always wanted to see but have not been able to find. It lasted just four episodes as well.
Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Two episodes today.
A So-so and an OK.
How to Steal a Submarine
Not sure I love the ocean based stories which is weird because I'm a new boater.
Started good. Was a great idea to drop the drugs. With GPS this is probably the way now.
Great idea using the submarine to retrieve them.
Didn't quite feel this episode though.
MPI: Ed Ka'ahea, Island Hoppers building/pier.
The Waterfront Steal
Richard Hatch is back.
It was alright.
The side story with Danno and Kimura (poor guy) was good.
MPI: Tommy Fujiwara, Ric Marlow
A So-so and an OK.

Agreed. Not a fan of either episode. I've said it before and I'll say it again - if the episode has the word "steal" in it then it's a good bet I won't like it.T.Q. wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 10:11 pm Two episodes today.

Actually "Submarine" had a pretty interesting premise with dropping the drugs overboard and then retrieving them later with a submarine. But somehow the episode just bogs down in the middle, with the school principal somehow being involved in all this. Jack Cassidy (father of David and Shaun Cassidy) of course is probably best know as the ultimate COLUMBO villain!
And "Waterfront" is yet another warehouse thefts episode, which to me is really boring. We've seen this before and we'll see it again.

What is it about the ocean-based stories that you don't like? Any particular ocean-based ones? Aside from this one. You said you liked "The Defector" (with Pat Hingle and Soon Taik-Oh), a lot of which took place on a Navy ship at sea.

72 episodes in 6 months.
There was the one on the cruise ship.
There was the recent two-parter where McGarrett joins the Navy with the long drawn out ocean scenes.
Then Submarine.
Just popped into my head.

Ah yes, "Killer at Sea" and "Murder--Eyes Only (part 1). Yes, not among the best.T.Q. wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 5:06 pmNow, you know my memory can't handle that.IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Thu Oct 14, 2021 4:10 pm

And now I recall that you didn't care for "Follow the White Brick Road" either (about drug smuggling aboard a Navy ship) back in season 4. But I'm sure you no longer remember that one.

Honor Is an Unmarked Grave
Pretty good.
Whole different vibe to this episode. Good piano music.
Was halfway through and wasn't sure about it but it turned out very interesting.
Pretty edgy dealing with the rape of a 15 year old.
A lot went on in this whodunit from greasy Travis Marshall (James Olson) to Koji to Paul to Kono to Mr. Henderson to Mrs. Henderson at the end.
MPI: Hoopai, Moe Keale

The Snoop Sisters even has an almost “Blaxploitation” episode “Fear is a Free Throw”). Its cast includes Bernie Casey and Gloria Hendry.Pahonu wrote: ↑Wed Oct 13, 2021 2:47 am Years ago I saw a Snoop Sisters episode with Alice Cooper as a cult leader of some sort. I really enjoyed it. The Snoop Sisters was included with the McMillan & Wife DVD set…other than the pilot film, my copy of “Snoop” wouldn’t play on a regular DVD player, but it does on my Blu-ray. Anyway, “Snoop” is a solid Universal production though there are some awkward attempts at humor (I blame the writing), but the cast is game and the production values are superb. Just don’t expect any life-transformative television!
I’ve always liked the NBC Mystery Movie series, and I would like to see Tenafly and Hec Ramsey someday.

I’ve only watched the movie and first episode so far. Fear is a Free Throw is next, I think. I’ve looked for Tenafly many times over the years to no avail.

A Touch of Guilt
Good episode. Hard episode to watch.
I fast forwarded the rape scene. Teared up a few times. I've said before I have two daughters and these types of episodes are very hard.
Quick story: When I was a teen I was shagging baseballs in the local park with a friend. We were the only one there. It was a Sunday morning. A girl was raped in the woods behind us. Still think about it to this day. If only we had heard her.
Anyways, a fine performance from Beverly Kushida (I could have sworn she was a Magnum guest star but it's not listed so maybe she just looks super similar to one of the actresses I was thinking of) as Lani.
The cultural angle was sad too. Lani's parents. Glad that has changed over the decades. Hopefully too in the Asian community.
The story was very interesting. The cleaner coming in. Rich and powerful protecting themselves.
Good other guest stars I recognized: Richard Masur, Adam Arkin as the scumballs.
Rest in Pieces BINK!
MPI: Seth Sakai

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Another solid episode, one that I didn't care for when I was younger. It's just one of those episodes that you appreciate more as you get older, your taste buds mature, and you're able to follow a more complex plot - one that doesn't involve serial killers, snipers, psychos, etc. Eileen Heckart, James Olson, all the local stock actors all do a fine job in this one! There's a great Morton Stevens score here too! And again Jack Lord directs and gets Mort to score his episode! This is another sort-of "cultured McGarrett" episode (like the one Jack Lord directed the previous season - "How to Steal a Masterpiece") where McGarrett gets involved with the wealthy and powerful, privileged upper-crust high society of Hawaii.T.Q. wrote: ↑Sat Oct 16, 2021 12:36 am Honor Is an Unmarked Grave
