With Mini-Mag making it to 4 seasons I thought we'd see a lot more newbies (younger crowd) that would end up checking out our Magnum PI and maybe join Magnum Mania.
Didn't seem to happen.
Maybe they just aren't interested in giving older series a chance?
Anyways, thought a whole new generation would "discover" the original. Too bad it didn't seem to happen. They're missing out.
Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.
Agreed. They are really missing out. But young people have different tastes these days. I, myself, am happy to watch the original almost anytime, but you couldn't pay me enough to watch that new pos.
I think there aren't any "newbies" on here checking out the old show because there aren't many interested in the new show either. Pretty sure the young crowd today doesn't watch network TV. They're either watching more "edgy" stuff on cable or sitting on their smart phones 24/7. I would guess those checking out the new show are most likely those familiar with the old show. Or those who really like Hawaii. Because the show just can't stand on its own legs as it currently is.

I guess.
Still... Gets 5 million views a week.
Poor in the 18-49 key demo (and I don't know how the number translates from the total viewers) but even if it's just half that could still be 2.5M.
Just say half of those are under 30. Still 1.25M people.
You'd think a bunch would check out the real Magnum.
Although, it is hard to find since Netflix and Amazon don't have them anymore.
Any of that make sense?

I agree with Ivan and NotthatRick . . . IMO anyone who gets turned on to Magnum through Mini-Mag isn't going to get the OG show. The biggest interest on this site came from either plants to push the show prior to it's premiere and the 1st season or OG fans who just liked the idea something Magnum has returned, Pet Cemetery version or not.
It's tough to say how many guests are newbies lurking, but my guess is any ground floor Mini-Mag fans are sharing info about the show on platforms other than this old forum . . .
I mentioned it on another thread somewhere, but I have to be brutally honest. We maniacs are just a TINY fraction of the original show’s audience and comparisons to the current show’s audience is pretty meaningless. Most of the millions who watched the original series moved on and don’t care about the show anymore. The same will be true of the new series whenever it ends. Millions of people watch it each week and the vast majority will never come back to it. I don’t believe there is a lot of crossover for that reason. The real comparison of fandom and show quality, that I think we all agree on, will come in many years, if or when a fan forum develops for the new series.
I wasn't curious if huge masses would come over to a 40 year old show or anything btw.
Just thinking 5M weekly viewers had to translate to some kind of bump in interest for the original Magnum.
Either by rekindling something in older viewers who remember they liked Magnum or new younger viewers just checking out the original (because of their parents or Google) and enjoying it.
Was talking in the thousands. And, over 4 years, thought maybe just a few would trickle in here.

I understand what your saying. Conch may have said it best. We don’t really know how many guests are visiting for the reasons you described, nor can we, unless they join and tell us.

Agreed Pahonu. I was a guest for a number of years before I joined.

Well I'm a newbie here, but only came across this great place because of the original show.
And have to agree, that you have to be a pretty big Magnum fan to actually join a Magnum website and forum.
But this site shows that the original series made a big enough impact to have a site dedicated to it, 20 years after it was off the air.

Same here. I visited this site MANY times over the years before finally biting the bullet and joining this year.
I seriously doubt the "Miggy" fans would be interested in the original Magnum, PI or this site. It will be interesting to watch and see if they eventually build a fan site for the reboot.
Here's to fine cigars, top shelf Scotch and watching the one and only Magnum, PI on DVD.
I think that's the problem with today's shows. Everything is serialized and expected to lead somewhere. People keep watching to see "will they or won't they?" Will Miggy ( ) happen or won't it?
Back in the day it was mostly standalone episodes. I suppose MPI was a bit of a rarity in that it actually had stories which were sometimes revisited later in the series. But this wasn't overdone. When we saw Michelle in "Memories Are Forever" I don't think there was this anticipation that we would revisit this story very soon, or ever at all. And when Michelle finally came back, what was it... season 7? In today's shows this type of story would expect to be revisited regularly. You can't give your hero a significant other and not keep going back to it again and again and again and again. With the new Five-Zero they also kept giving McGarrett new girlfriends every season it seemed like and then they would drag that whole relationship throughout the season - will they or won't they? I hate that stuff.
With classic MPI it was about the weekly story and the escape to paradise and to vicariously live the life of Thomas Magnum and his adventures. There was no on-going romance that we followed week to week. That's soap opera stuff that has infected every show these days. Didn't used to be this way. Ah, the good old days. Now, get off my lawn!

Hey Ivan,
I would argue that series TV today is simply responding to what viewers want/expect in a series today. Times change and preferences from 40 years ago aren’t as popular, no matter how much you or I or any of the Maniacs disagree. The very large number of “miggy” Instagram links above seems far greater in number than our fan base, and pretty clear evidence of the popularity of that kind of storyline. Wishing for a return to the good old days is ultimately an exercise in futility. The past will not return. Enjoying those things from the past that we loved seems far more rewarding than wasting time and energy being critical of change. Change is inevitable. That said, you know I very much enjoy older detective series, but have also found many newer series that are very well done also. There’s a whole lot out there to choose from today.
