Fantastic episode.

Literally had everything. So much in this episode.

Great bad guy, great creepiness, love the slow and deliberate making of the name plates, great car chase, great music, the apartment, the phone call.

The music was top notch a la Magnum investigating the Ripper too.

And did he get away? Well, did he?

Close to a 10/10 for me. Right up my alley.
They remade the episode on the new series. I heard it was well done, but never saw the new one. The original was excellent.

I think I remember now that you mention it. As soon as I read it thought of Peter Weller.

I watched the new one basically until Wo Fat died and it got cheesier and cheesier.

Was a good season.

Dig up those DVDs.

A screen cap would just be a picture of the Estate.
How would you rate season 5 compared to the previous seasons? Better or about the same?

Seasons 1 and 5 used to be my favorites but these days I might actually go with season 6 as the cream of the crop! You're in for a great season, as demonstrated by "Hookman". I still do love season 1 for the freshness of the whole thing and that cool late 60s vibe! In the Nielsen ratings season 6 came in second after season 5 so those middle years with Ben were VERY popular!

It's really hard to say.

Not ever seeing it before and watching 3 or 4 episodes a week it all kinda gets mushed together.

I can tell you Season 5, being so fresh in my head, was really really good. Stood out to me.

It's a stone cold classic for sure!! Pretty much tied for 1st place with season 4's "Rest in Peace, Somebody". I love these episodes where someone has a personal grudge against McGarrett! You mentioned "Death and Taxes" but I think "Rest in Peace" has more in common with that one because there you have a mysterious caller who keeps harassing McGarrett with phone calls. Hookman is pretty much a silent killer who doesn't contact McGarrett. But yes, he's a creepy villain. So was Cameron in "Rest in Peace". I love the opening with the slow build-up where you watch the Hookman walking through the cemetery and then up to his perch where he sets up his rifle, scope, etc. All this is intercut with the funeral procession as the vehicles make their way down Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki, then down some other streets, then going through the Diamond Head tunnel (which in reality doesn't make sense lol, why would they be inside Diamond Head crater?). All this is so well done (like a feature film!) and accompanied by a fantastic music score by Morton Stevens (his series best!) for which he won an Emmy award. His earlier Emmy win was for the season 2 opener "A Thousand Pardons -- You're Dead!" which was another awesome score.

Close to a 10/10? Why close? What's missing? I'd give it an 11.

P.S. Jay J. Armes, who played Hookman, is (or was) something of a celebrity I believe. He was a real-life private investigator and a very successful one at that who solved some pretty high profile crimes. There was a cool article about him somewhere. He really did have hooks for hands and really mastered them. Could hold a gun no problem. There's even a book about him on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Jay-J-Armes-Inve ... 0025032003

He’s still around and apparently still pretty active.

He had to have his hands amputated as a child when they were badly damaged by railroad warning detonators, that he and a friend stole, blew up.

The Hookman remake was inferior in every way possible! First of all, without Morton Stevens iconic score it's an entirely different thing. The remake opens with Robocop... err... Peter Weller walking and listening to some kind of heavy metal garbage on his ear buds. No scoring whatsoever. And whatever score there was in the episode it was the same generic recycled droning sound that you heard in every single episode. Nothing at all to differentiate this one from the rest. Then there's the very basic idea behind the title of "Hookman" - where were his hooks? He had some sort of prosthetic plastic hands with fingers and everything. Doesn't that make him "Handman"???? I mean he has hands. There are no hooks. What's the point of the title then? Also Peter Weller (great actor that he is - check him out in season 5 of "24") simply isn't creepy enough, not when compared to Jay J. Armes! And of course I could just never get past the grating "dynamic" between the new McGarrett and Danno. Their grade school "bantering" and "carguments" were simply awful. So forced beyond belief. The writing on the show was awful. In this episode Danno gets into a stupid anti-gun rant with a gun store owner which doesn't have any kind of meaning to it. It has nothing to do with the story. It's just there because Danno is a whiner and has to constantly b!tch and moan about something. The original Five-O had 2 pretty strong anti-gun episodes which were handled well. The new show treats everything on a grade school level.

Yep, it's amazing that he's still active. Still looks good for his age. I don't even know how old he is but almost 50 years have passed since that Five-O episode and even then he didn't exactly look young. Looked middle aged. Maybe in his late 40s.

Oh so you're one of those... nothing is perfect.

For me if I loved it enough to warrant multiple viewings it's an easy 10/10.

So he was 41 when the episode aired. He actually looked a decade older. Could pass for 51 easy. But I guess people looked older back in the day. You have Tom Cruise today pushing 60 who doesn't look older than 40.

Draw Me a Killer

Another excellent episode.

We see the actor from Grandstand again (I remember liking it and you not so much?).

Loved the scene where the cartoonist was drawing the comic strip as the kid was reading.

Very creative episode. Good stuff.

I wish Danno had said "Don't worry, I'll take care of Judy". I was waiting for it.

Charter for Death

Didn't like it that much.

Nothing special.

Burt Convey was pretty good.

I think the reboot ripped this one. Saw an episode once on a boat and then they were quarantined.

Speaking of quarantine/plagues/viruses... Pretty burned out. Maybe why I didn't like this one much. Find it ridiculous they treated Covid-19 like it was the bubonic plaque and I kept thinking that.

The pretty Asian nurses in the episode perked me up a bit though. :P

MPI: Nehemiah Persoff again.

Superb episode! Yes, another 10/10!! :D

With "Hookman" and this one it's definitely the best start of any season! These 2 I would say are the best of season 6. Although there's another one late in the season which is just as great, one that I would say is also the most disturbing one in the entire series.

Yep, Elliott Street is back from "Grandstand Play" (where I also liked him, if not the episode) and again here he plays a mentally challenged individual, albeit one more disturbed and deadly. His Arthur character here is really "out there". Loved the comic strip angle and the joke about Danno the crooked cop stealing apples and sending the cores to Judy Moon. Anyway, it's just a perfect episode. The series at its best! The score by Richard Shores was very good, especially the inclusion of the thumping sound (for Arthur's heartbeat I guess) right before he kills someone.
