That's awesome, K Hale! Strange about a man sleeping in a hammock on the property. You sure it wasn't Kenji the gardener? My impression when I was there was that nobody was living there. I mean there isn't really any place to "live", since the main house is gone. I can't imagine the gatehouse or the boathouse are in "livable" condition. Wonder if the owner decided to pay a visit to his property and decided to relax in a hammock for a bit. Anyway, you should definitely come back there again and do the Magnum swim-and-sneak-to-the-gate as seen in the pilot. That's what I did. :D How were the waves in the tidal pool? Did the water splash all the way up against the wall? Was the surf high? Or was the tidal pool calm?

EDIT: Sounds like a certain MPI episodes doesn't it?
Haha, yes! :D

Rick was the Set Director for Season 4, 5, 6 and Assistant Decorator for Season 7.

From his blog... I built many items from Higgin's bridge on the River Kwai to crashed jet tail sections to battle axes at the theatre up the hill from the studio where I was the resident lighting and set designer. I have done most of the shows from Hawaii since Magnum including the pilot and first 60 episodes of "LOST" and the pilot and first 12 episodes of the new "5-0."

So that's why we're hoping he remembers the RM crest.

Here's his blog: http://magnumdecorator.blogspot.com/
Aha, I see. Thanks! Good to have someone intimately connected with the show lurking around here. :) In fact it's an honor.

Tidal pool was calm and warm as bathwater. Lots of people around including tiny kids in water wings. The man in the hammock was not on the property, he was on the beach side of the gate right in front of the "posted no trespassing keep out" sign.

What a disappointment! I hope you have the extra time and can get back there to look in before you leave the island.

We visit the Arizona Memorial and its associated museums today. We had planned to revisit Kaiona Beach Park and Pahonu Tuesday and spend the day there but it is looking like Tropical Storm/Hurricane Olivia may put paid to that. We fly out Wednesday night. (We hope...)

It wasn't me in the hammock - honest!
I'm too busy pruning the bushes for your next visit Ivan
The gatehouse is still in decent shape to live in. The owners did have renters in there during the demolition, not sure if they are still there though.
My vote is prop all the way on the crest.

Following is a link our member Golfmobile made after she and her husband went to Oahu and met up with a "crew member" that showed her many of the props used in the show..........
I sure would love to know what happened to those gates...

I remember walking past that fence on my way from the parking lot to the Estate...Their was a gentleman standing up there smoking a pipe that I gave a wave, a thumbs up and a nod to as I was so excited to get to our mecca I wanted to share my euphoria...Think they know something about the area that we don't????

Hi Steve,
That would be the one! :D
Here is what it probably looked like when you were there..........

They have done quite a few updates, but not worthy of that price tag.
I remember them running a B&B out of there at one time.
I don't think they know something that we don't......more wishful thinking on their part......sure, maybe when Pahonu is rebuilt and the new owners move in (assuming it's the Obamas) they could ask more, but I think at the moment they are way ahead of the curve and will be waiting quite sometime for any offer....time will tell.

I walked past it too last month. I definitely saw people on the property and on the balcony, from the ocean side. This house is next door to the Shriners house.

You're close Ivan.....there are two small homes between the Shriner's property and this listed one (41-537 and 41-541 K.Hwy). :)

I don't follow. Isn't that entire property with the open space, next to the pink property that's for sale, isn't that all Shriner's? First you have the Anderson Estate, next you have Shriners (which is pretty long with lots of open space), and then you have the pink property that's for sale. Then it's the beach park. There's nothing else there besides those 3 properties.

EDIT: I do see 2 additional gates but they seem to lead onto the Shriners property.

Hi Ivan,
Take a look at an aerial pic and you will see a wall between the Shriner's property and the other two.
Hope that helps.
