Robins Nest Visit
Greetings all, I am doing my "Bucket List" and my first trip is to Hawaii, leaving Jan 6th. We will be doing several islands along with Oahu. My wife is not a big Magnum fan, so to keep the peace I don't think I can squeeze in more than a stop at Robins Nest. To that end; what is the address of the house, isn't there a public park nearby, and, is it sallow enough to wade up to the beach from the park? Any other tips will be appreciated. Thanks
Yes, I will take photos.

Hi Karnut,
Look at Robin's Nest under Articles in Magnum Mania and you will find all the info needed. I've been there many times....easy to find....I would park your car in the park just after the estate (doors down) and walk into the water from there and it will take you the tidal pool. Sometimes the water is ankle deep and a few times it has been waist high. B.K. might know the tides schedule to help with your quick visit. Enjoy!

I will give you the (estimated by the big brains) low tide times and days:
Sun 6th 4 pm low tide.
Mon 7th, 7 am low tide. (Beware, they tell me then at 9 am it is high tide. Moves wikiwiki eh?!)
Tuesday 8th, 7;50 am. and at 6 pm.
Wednesday 9th, 8:28 am. and at 6.49.
Thurs. 10th of Jan: 9; am and at 7:35 pm.
Friday 9:37 am and at 8:18 pm.
Saturday 10;12 am and at 8:59 pm.
At the estate, If at the fence mauka or makai side, don't stare in peering like a kid gawking at animals at the zoo. Be discrete, polite, nonobvious. If you see Ms. Anderson, say aloha auntie, how you!? do NOT block the gate or park anywhere near it. This is done too often as it is. At the Anderson estate as well as Kaha'aina. The Cooke estate.
When there, don't wear shoes on the beach. Don't wear that stupid shell lei or any lei. Taking pics with your android phone? keep the phone in pocket until ready to shoot, not aiming at things all the time at arms length. Not cool around residential area.
Park in the beach parking lot or across the street where there is ample car space, away from the road. The beach parking lot is about one house or so to the left of Pahonu. Show no valuables visible within the car. As mentioned, best to leave car windows open. Leave em open half way. Be friendly to the locals. Nod upwards with a smile and say whussup! to da braddahs if they look your direction. Ignore the blalahs and get planny pilikia maybe.
Enjoy yer trip, lemme know if you need more days tide info.
Oh, while in Waimanalo, check out Keneke's plate lunch if ono for some local grinds, If you want Mexican, I recommend Serge's. They are down a mile or so towards Kailua. Go into the market for six pack, Serge's is BYOB (yaaay!)
Eat at Wailana coffee shop., (60's style cafe) Ala Moana Blvd/Ena Rd.
Drinks in their bar across from the register, it's a cool 60's style Polynesian bar in the round. Happy hour specials on the greazy food. yum.
Up that street, Ena road, Irish Rose saloon, live rock music every nite no cover, fun place. behind it best dive bar around; Hideaway. (If smoke bothers ya, don't bother.)
Hang out on the beach before sunset near Hilton Hawaiian Village any Friday eve for the fireworks. Check out Cuz Henry at Duke's Waikiki beach for Duke's on Sunday. It is a party. Henry Kapono, good friend for years. Our contemporary local Ambassador of Aloha.
Cool local farmers market at International market Place every Thursday TIME: 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m . Worth a visit.
Then go over to that wacky tiki bar a few feet away and have a drink, beer, froufrou cocktail... and askem why do they have effigies of Hawai'i's sacred revered gods decorating an alcohol venue. (haha).
Check out the Aloha Stadium swap meet. Wednesdays, Saturdays Sundays. Pick up rubbah slippahz, (do not call em flip flops.) Aloha wear and carvings, necklaces and souvenirs of all kinds at near wholesale. Be polite and bargain if you picking up planny stuffs from one vendor but in a friendly manner. If rude, They don't need you, cuz tourists flood the place. They want you only if you are cool and don't say stuff like "I will give you three dollars!" or "Well I can get this a lot cheaper at the other place!" (go there then!) I say this cuz it's so prevalent. We don't like demands, commands or complaining.
hmmm where else. Oh yea. DO visit the zoo. That was the first job I had at age 15. 1970. Not that that is the reason. But it's quite nice.
Ono's Hawaiian plate lunch on Kapahulu up the road. Or Haili's Hawaiian food. For 5 dallah pitcher beer, fabulous Mexican food and live local music, it's OnStage / Lulu's mexican Grill. Best time 5 to 7, everything 2 dollars off the menu price. All three within two blocks or so, Ewa side of Kapahulu. (left side as ya go up.)
Best local plate lunch, Rainbow drive In. Diamond head side on Kapahulu before all this.
For a huge selection of Hawaiian collectables and aloha wear, Bailey's antiques on Kapahulu.
Take a cruise all the way up from Waimanalo along the coast through La'ie, (Polynesian Cultural center is a must) and then end up at Hale'iwa. Great shops and grinds. Along the way up from Kane'ohe, you will pass Waiahole Poi Factory. Chance 'um. Bestest Hawaiian plate lunch around.
(Start here for any O'ahu reviews. http://www.yelp.com/biz/waiahole-poi-factory-kaneohe)
Do visit Foster Botanical Gardens, Vineyard and Nu'uanu.
Have fun. Happy New Year.

That could be seen as shorthand implying we have a different culture here. What is acceptable on mainland USA may not be, here. It may be the 50th state. But many locals take pride in the fact it is a wholly other ethnological historical sovereign national feel with different ways & means wholly foreign to outsiders and many locals look at Hawai'i as a different country. Notwithstanding the appropriation by america in 1889 and then again in 1959 and the resultant gradual and accelerating dissolution of Hawaii's spiritual and physical culture.
Karrnut, I do not agree if you park your car in the parking lot just past the estate, that you leave the windows of the car open. To do so is asking for trouble. We always put the top up on the car, close windows and leave nothing of any value in the trunk, as is advised throughout the islands.
If we see any of the local people we always smile and say hello and have sat and talked with some. In the eleven years we have visited, have never had any problems.
One year we saw Mrs. Anderson with her dogs and she waved. Would like to have spoken to her, but she deserved her privacy. Just my opinion but tourists, calling anyone 'Auntie' is, unacceptable, even though seniors are called this in the islands and it sounds endearing. Again, we are tourists not residents!
Have a wonderful holiday! We aren't far behind as we leave here February 10th! Aloha!

Karrnut,
I have been visiting the estate end of november:
Try to be there at low tide because the view is nicer and the way to Robins nest is easier.Parts of the normal path are damaged and it's not much of fun to walk over the stones and rocks on high tide.
If you have a GPS, just search for 41-505 Kalanianaole Highway.
More infos here:

If you can squeeze it in, try to visit the Kahala resort. The KKC beach bar is there and you can see the place a lot in the series.
You don't have necessarily to tell your better half that it's an MPI location, just have a coffee or tea with here there
Enjoy your trip and Rubberchickens guide is most helpful to find more.

Thanks a lot Guys!
Esp. to you Kimo.
I have printed everything off and will take it with me.
This may be my last trip, though I sure hope not, but "health" has a lot to do with it. I have already changed my schedule to add an extra day (3 total) to Oahu, and another day added to Maui (Also 3).
I already have reservations for the Polynesian Cultural Center, and plans to check out the Byodo-In Temple.
It should be a great trip, thanks again!
