Tom Selleck on Battle of The Network Stars 1980-1981

#1 Post by Brian »

Has anyone seen Battle of the Network Stars # 9 & # 10?

Special # 9 Dec. 1980 they showed a cool promo reel for Selleck, included were 8mm home movies of Tom when he was a kid.

CBS won both years. Selleck was the team captain in May 1981.

It's a must see if your a Magnum fan.

looks like somebody made it into a dvd set.

the mag was on the team in the 1980 one and was the captain for
cbs in the 1981 episode - looks like they would be complete in this set.

one of the youtube links i posted had a teaser in there where they started
to do a bio of TS with some cool old footage, but it cuts off. the end of the
swimming relay from 1981 link.....

This is the same set of dvds I got from ioffer, the quaity is not very good on these dvds but it is worth seeing. I also just bought a dvd of "Don't Eat the Snow in Hawaii" orginal network broadcast with orginal commercials. I think I'll wait and watch it in Dec. for the 31 year anniversary.

This is great stuff! Talk about your trip in the time machine! I couldn't help but laugh out loud (the good kind of laugh out loud) when hearing Howard Cosell say, "...And Tom Selleck for C-B-S. He'll be in the left lane." Like I'm getting ready to watch a Saturday Night Fight at the MGM Grand or something! :)

Man, kind of surprised Scott Baio beat Selleck (by a hair) in a freestyle swim! Baio was really moving! Even more surprise Willie Aames beat Selleck (again by a hair)!!

They should bring back Battle of the Network Stars. Cable vs. Network, or Reality vs. Non-Reality Stars, or something like that. ;)

Funny you mention it. I was thinking the same thing. I really liked watching these things way back then. I bet they could never afford it now with agents bargaining so hard for their clients. Shame.

Great clips! I'm trying to figure out what in heavens name happened to me in the seventies to cause me to skip watching Magum, PI in 1980 and instead watch many of those awfull shows that the Stars were on at the time.

Real People (how is Byron Allen even still around!)

BJ and the Bear (Wouldn't you have loved to have heard the pitch......."No, it will be great, a show about a Trucker and a Monkey")

Buck Rogers (okay, Erin Grey)

And I could go on and on............

ESPN classic shows the reruns on Monday nights. Last night was #9. I didn't catch the entire show but did tune in to see Tom throw two touchdown passes in the football competition, but he also threw two interceptions. The best part was when he was on defense he sacked Scott Baio "real good". There were even a couple of future Magnum guest stars including Erin Gray, Phyllis Davis and John Beck.............

I actually caught a bit of that race the other night too. It's on Youtube:

That is one fast stalking horse...

p.s. Howard Cosell was awful. How he managed to be so successful is mind boggling.

Oh yeah, I have fond memories of when my DirecTV packge also included ESPN Classic, Trio, Cloo, and ... :(

I'm sure I saw the Magnum/Chachi battle originally but don't recall, as a young teen I watched BNS regularly, as well HB/ND Mysteries :D The BNS that makes me laugh is Conrad versus Mr. Kotter from 1976 ??? - too funny.

Ha! Selleck smoked John Beck in the final leg! That's what he gets for fooling around with Michelle in "Limbo" (eight years in the future)! :)
