I've never heard that before, but it does make a whole lot of sense. I don't think anyone would want to risk being a meal for a hungry Tiger Shark.Lily wrote:One has to wonder just what possessed Mrs. Anderson to have all those dogs there and who might have cleared up after all them?![]()
There are strict laws for dogs re beaches on Oahu, but unfortunately in the area of the Estate, those laws seem more relaxed.
Oh for the days of the lads!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the "rules" for this function at the estate, from this page (click on "Read more"). Below are some of the rules / guidelines.
And we have had accounts of her talking kindly about the show with fans visiting the beach. Think how many times that must have happened across two or even close to three decades.
Anyway, it's understandable both that fans want to see the estate, or at least the beach and tidal pool, and also that she would likely prefer a break after all these years.
#4 gives us another indication of how often she must meet Magnum fans. If I was her, I think I also would have grown tired of talking about the show. With so many tourists visiting Oahu, some of whom wish to see the estate, I picture fan encounters on some level as having happened every week (sometimes every day?) for the past 20+ years. She seems very nice, hosting these canine parties, and even waving hello to golf (or was she waving to Magnum GI?).To respect her privacy and generosity, we ask everyone to follow these basic “rules” during our outing:
1. Be prompt! Allow plenty of time to arrive here on time-this is a priority because there’s a whole system we have to adhere to when entering/exiting her property. She uses 2 gates that one of us will have to man during arrival/departures, so it’s a time consuming process and none of us wants to spend the entire time monitoring the gates as people meander in anytime.
So, we are requiring EVERYONE to arrive between 8:50-9am and be willing to stay until at least 12:45-1pm. If you cannot adhere to these stipulations, you will not be able to attend or you will have to park along the roadside across the street.
2. Up to 20 cars will be allowed to park on her property, after that, the rest may just park along the roadside across the street. If you are inviting guests, please carpool. Parking spots on the property are reserved for pug members. Be sure to lock your cars and pugs must be leashed while crossing this very busy street and until safely through both gates and onto the property.
4. Please do not promote this as visiting the “Magnum PI” house since Eve has grown tired of that reference all of these years. As you can imagine, there are still fanatical fans who try to access her property, surely convinced that Tom Selleck will appear any minute. So limit this discussion to ourselves, not to her.
8. For recreation, there is tether ball, vball, tennis courts, playground equipment-anyone using this, esp. children, have to be monitored at all times. Eve is not liable for any accident, injury, falling coconut, etc. while on her property.
9. Bathrooms will be available-signs will be posted to access them in an outer bldg. You have to enter a small gate that overlooks the seawall, so pugs that follow you to the bathroom have to be in your control at all times so as not to jump off of the seawall.
10. Eve asked that no one pick the flowers or seagrapes please.
11. We hope everyone will be respectful and follow these guidelines-this will allow us to continue the use of this site for the future-we want to make a good impression. Eve LOVES pugs, we want her to love the owners as well…

Anyway, it's understandable both that fans want to see the estate, or at least the beach and tidal pool, and also that she would likely prefer a break after all these years.

Lily,
Just ask what she's doing to fix the place up! I'm very curious about that, and that's what I would have asked had she stopped to talk to me. I think I wouldn't even have mentioned MPI as I'm sure we here know more about it than she does (or wants to!), since we "study" it all the time. Besides, I wouldn't even know what to say to her or ask her about MPI. And it'd probably be too personal to ask her about when she bought (acquired? moved into?) the property and who had it before she did, just the history of the property itself, who actually built it.
James, I'm sure she wasn't waving at MGI! I guess I'm just lucky she waved at all. She wasn't looking at me when she just sort of threw her arm up. Maybe she was just slightly surprised to see a female, because it seems from most of the posts, here at least, that most persons visiting the tidal pool are guys. You think?
Now, we know how to get access to the estate -- just move to Hawaii, buy a pug, and join the pug club.

Golf,
While my husband is playing golf, I plan to go and search the records of the Estate and see what I can find out. Think it would be quite interesting to find out who initially owned the land all along that beach area before it was subdivided into lots, information on the tidal pool and of course first owners of the Estate. Have a good friend in Honolulu who works at the Bishop Museum, so am hoping to get some advice and help from him, re the tidal pool.
I dont know how you felt when you were at the Estate, but I get this overwhelming feeling of being so close, yet so far? Would give anything to be able to go through the gates and just walk around the house and grounds. Can but dream!

James,this from a radio interview in 2005.
"then when you go through the back part of the house, there is almost like a public restroom where there is stalls as well as place to shower off."

Hey Golf, Kind of a personal question here, What are your husband's feelings about MPI? Does he like the show at all, or just tolerate your liking it? Just curious?Lily wrote:Golf,

"But Higgins, I can explain."
I was thinking to myself if and when I ever get back there, and would happen to have the good fortune of visiting the tidal pool when Ms. Anderson is around, I would probaly be trying in vain to come up with respectfull questions about herself, her love of dogs, the properties history, the history of Cox Communications and maybe slip in a question about the "square slab". No questions or mention of Magnum,p.i. but all the while standing there in too short-shorts, a red parrot Hawaiian Shirt and wearing a mustache......LOL...James J. Walters wrote:4. Lily,
My feeling when there was more "why has it been allowed to run down like this" than "close but yet so far." In a way, I would have liked to have been able to explore the grounds, but from what I could see of them and the house, I think I would have been disappointed again at how much they no longer look as they did during MPI (and particularly H-50) days. Even in those picnic pictures on Picasa, there were tarps on the upper level of the house. How long have they been there? Why are they there? Protecting damage? Why hasn't it been fixed? Yes, it was AWESOME to be there, but there was a little niggling "little voice" saying, "You can't go home again." I kept thinking, "Higgins would be APPALLED!"
I kind of wish I HAD done the private helicopter flight now, so we could hover over the estate (as you can't do on a paid tour or in an airplane) and I could really see what was going on with it.
In the long run, it boils down to the fact that it's not what we tend to expect it to be from seeing it on MPI. That doesn't really detract at all from actually BEING at the tidal pool -- I would still do that again. But at the same time, it's not exactly what you would like to see. If that makes any sense . . . .
However, it seems that Ms. Anderson is willing to allow visitors in groups on the grounds under certain circumstances. Maybe if enough of us could ever get there at the same time for our MM reunion, it could be worked out somehow? However, if she's resentful of the MPI fan intrusions, maybe not. Open to anyone BUT MPI fans?
I'm very ambivalent about the entire situation.
Mike, as to Larry's attitude about my fan-dom, he likes the show well enough. E.g., if there's NOTHING on TV to watch, even he will occasionally say, "Let's watch Magnum" (because he knows I always have a few episodes DVR'ed). And he probably won't admit it, but he's more interested in watching them now that we have been to the tidal pool and seen the props -- as he really enjoyed watching "Rapture," simply because of the necklace we saw. And remember, our next to last morning there when we were going to snorkel at Kaupo Beach, just four buildings away, when I went back to the car to get the snorkel stuff and got back to the beach, he had disappeared, and HE was down at the tidal pool checking it out. Bless his heart, also remember, he's not embarrassed to be seen with me and MGI! That in and of itself makes him a "keeper." Plus he lets me decorate our living room with Island Hoppers-scheme painted helicopters.
Also he's gotten rather accustomed over the last 15 years to my various obsessions (some of which he has to take the blame for because he taught me to snow-ski and then to golf and he suggested I buy Microsoft Flight Simulator to learn to fly virtual helicopters before I tried it in a real one). Maybe he just loves me because I entertain him and I always have some kind of project or obsession going on, so I'm not boring. And, currently, of all my obsessions, this one is probably the cheapest (we would have taken a Hawaii vacation anyway)!! This costs a LOT less than collecting vintage Madame Alexander dolls or buying all the state-of-the-art computer equipment for flight simming.

Golf,
What I meant was that while you find yourself actually standing at the Estate, with the lovely beach and the tidal pool...its what is over the other side of the fence which is what you would really love to see, hence
'close but yet so far'.
Very first time I was there and saw this property, I too wondered just why it was so run down...the boat house especially, really got to me. Since then, each year, it appears nothing has been done at all to maintain the property. Will look for the tarps when I am there and see if I can see any new developments...probably not!
Steve,
Funny at the thought of you standing in your Magnum get up, while talking to Mrs. Anderson! Yes, you are right, keep the conversation to all the things she loves, before going in with the questions we really want to know!
