Golf - That sucks you aren't going to Hawaii but I'd take the Caribbean any day! The price for your 'Mission Beach Breach' seems very good. I'm assuming this would have to do with the proximity to it from where you live.....lucky devil! I of course on the other hand live a lot closer to Hawaii....so there  Enjoy the greens!

That's great you're into choppers! How was trying to control the torque with the foot pedals? I always thought that would be the most difficult. I'd love to have a go at helicopters. Growing up I was always interested in them do mainly to TC. I even went to the point of learning the basic helicopter handbook but flight school was a lot of money. I've done simulation too but I grew out of actually taking up flying as a career. My cousin though, ended up becoming an airline pilot and I've had a go at flying Cessnas. Of course I pretend I'm flying Spitfires
Icepick - Does it ever occur to you that you are always having to bail your friend Magnum out of trouble?

Well, we didn't make it to St. Croix -- flying standby, and the plane was full. So we lost one day and ended up flying to Cancun and staying at the Coral Ocean and Turquesa about halfway between Cancun and Tulum.

Personally, I don't like being in a place where I don't speak the language and feel that everyone is out to get your money because you can't quibble -- you're rather at their mercy, and they know that. We didn't get the price we thought we were booking at and virtually had to pay whatever they asked because we'd already paid the $56 shuttle ride from the airport to the resort. It was all-inclusive, which is convenient but somewhat of a waste for us, as we don't eat that much (I don't EAT three meals a day, barely two!), but we tried to make up for it by drinking as much as we could! And because of the mix-up on price, which we were able to get changed for the second night, they "cut off" our "swipe" room keys when the first night's price changed, which required two trips from our very distant-from-the-lobby room to the front desk to tell them the keys weren't working, then another to get the credit card again so they could approve re-activation. At least we walked off the big breakfast, but this was annoying in the heat!!

We got a good sunburn but couldn't snorkel because the reef was too far out to swim to, and you had to pay to have someone take you out to it in a boat (and we heard from two folks that it was disappointing, particularly for the price -- $70 per person). That's the main reason I go to the beach, as I don't tan and I don't swim. I was annoyed that I had to spend 2 hours (!!) with Guest Services on our only full day there, just arranging for a shuttle back to the airport the next day. Our mini-bar had no Diet Cokes, and it was a major chore to get them (inconvenient for me, because this is what I drink all day long -- so I made up for it by drinking frozen strawberry margaritas all day long, after mimosas at breakfast . . . . ). At least there was wireless internet access in the lobby, which was as far from our room as it could be, without going to the south end of the resort [we were on the far north end]). No ice machines for your sodas or drinks that you want to have in your room (but I learned where the ice machine was at the snack hut just outside our room by the kiddie pool, so I just crawled over the counter when the bar was closed and got my own ice -- probably not "kosher" but more convenient than calling for room service (had to do that THREE times, just to get a couple of Diet Cokes brought once, late on Friday night, they never brought them to us Thursday night and didn't stock them in the mini-bar as we requested twice).

And I just personally don't like having to put my "valuables" in a safe in my room! I don't like the idea that my locked room isn't a safe place to leave things.

The most annoying thing, which wasn't the resort's fault, fortunately, was that I managed to lose my koa wood pen I had gotten in Hawaii! I really loved that slim little pen, and I can't find one anywhere close to it online. Anyone going to Hawaii soon? We might not get there in September, after all, if airlines keep cutting flights back. We got it at a Long's Drug Store among all the souvenir stuff there, and it was about $15. If anyone is going and can find one for me, I'll be more than happy to reimburse you for the cost and for shipping to me. The ones I can find online are all "chubby," and I preferred my slim, straight one, very simple and elegant.

MGI made it this time, fortunately (I had him in my carry-on -- wonder what the x-ray screeners thought . . . but no one mentioned it. I guess they see weirder things than MGI). Pictures on his blog:

MGI in Mexico

Larry has another four days off the end of this month, and we're going to try St. Croix again but we don't know if we'll be able to get on that flight either. Might as well try. At least we can snorkel there AND drive around and explore in our own rental car AND play golf, if we can get the same deal we found last time. Now I really want to do that, since it was denied to me and I got stuck in Mexico.

Golf...sorry you didn't have the best of times.

Sure looks like the margaritas and the mimosas may have helped liven things up a bit. Loved that you brought MGI along for the trip. I was dying laughing at the pics. Loved in the beginning how he was all shy under the towel and then ended up standing on his head and doing syncronized swimming routines! Must have been the margaritas! I bet you're fun to party with!

Sorry Golf that you didnt have as great a vacation as expected. Know what you mean about those all-inclusives as one can get full up just looking at how some people eat! Some of the other things you mentioned are many of the reasons we keep going back to Hawaii as you know exactly what you get for your money.

Will be in Hawaii next February, and if you cant find a replacement pen by then, I would be more than happy to find you one, and send it on.

Sorry your trip turned out so badly, Golf. It sounds as if you handled it with more composure than I would have managed! The pictures of Magnum GI are fabulous. :D I'm so glad he was able to travel in your carry-on luggage, this time.

Well . . . . . hopefully we're off again tomorrow -- who knows where? We're listed for flights to St. Croix and to Honolulu. Wonder which one we can get on . . . . maybe neither

Will report more if we get anywhere.

Life's an adventure -- at least when you fly stand-by!

Golf,

How do you make arrangements for accomodations if you aren't sure where you will end up? Make two sets of reservations and then cancel the one you don't need?

Only asking because my husband swears that I treat every trip as if it is the invasion of Normandy. (Just a tiny bit OCD here)

Have a great trip!

MPS,

I wrote the below two hours ago before the power went out at my house and I was incommunicado for that length of time. During that time, our flights to Hawaii got TOTALLY OVERSOLD by about 20 people, plus another 20 non-revenue (employee) passengers listed ahead of us (governed by seniority). So it looks as though we aren't going anywhere. I still post the below message to show how we WOULD get accommodations if we COULD get there (which apparently we now canNOT).

I am seriously bummed . . . . I spent two hours in a hot, muggy, dark house, packing by flash- and candle-light only to find out I wasted that time. Oh, well, what else could I do? Couldn't even watch MPI reruns on the DVR (with no power!!) I guess I could have watched them on the laptop, but I didn't want to use up the batteries which I would hope to use on the airplane IF WE COULD EVER GET ON AN AIRPLANE TO GO ANYWHERE!!

Boy, this working for Delta for minimum wage and "flight privileges" sure isn't doing US any good with current gas prices killing airlines! :x :(

Anyway, here's what I wrote when I had hope. I was really planning on a picture of MGI in the surf, holding his wrist up to look at his watch to re-create "Home from the Sea" -- "Dad, I'm going to make it, just ten more minutes."

PREVIOUSLY COMPOSED MESSAGE:

MPS,

Usually I am like you -- have to have everything locked and loaded before I set foot in the airport. I can make a rental car reservation without a credit card (and oddly enough, an SUV in Hawaii is the cheapest thing to rent because, I guess, gas prices have made all the little cars more desirable!! Usually you can't GET an SUV or you pay close to $75 a day for it.)

However, again, that which is messing us up on getting ON a flight to start with (airlines cutting back on flights so all flights are full) is working to our benefit when it comes to accommodations -- no one is traveling (except, apparently, for those who want to be on the flights we want), so hotels/resorts, etc., are nearly 50 percent empty, so you can find someplace nice fairly cheaply and on short notice.

For example, it appears that we MAY be going to Honolulu after all, as the most available flights for us, as of right now (7 p.m. EDST) is a flight out of Atlanta at 7:05 a.m., via Salt Lake City, into Honolulu. There are nearly 20 empty seats on both legs of that trip. Of course, that means I have to get up at 3 a.m. to shower, get ready, etc., get to the airport two hours in advance, etc., etc. (and Larry won't get HOME from work until 1 a.m. - he might as well not even go to bed at all -- just sleep on the flights over).

The bad news about taking connecting flights back is that it takes so much longer, so we lose one day in paradise. If we could get the direct flight back late in the evening on Sat., Aug. 2, which gets back into Atlanta at 6 a.m. Sunday morning, that would give us Wed. afternoon, all day Friday, and all day Saturday there, which is a short time, but we'd have time to hit the Eve Anderson estate beach and maybe a few other sites, plus snorkeling on two mornings. That would work for us because Larry doesn't have to go back to work till 2 p.m. on Sunday. However, that flight is oversold, so we can’t count on getting on that flight. So we have to come back FRIDAY night via LAX, which gets us in Sat. at 2:48 p.m., which would be too late if we got in on the same flight on Sun. for Larry to be at work on time. So that gives us only Wed. afternoon, all day Thursday, and most of Friday there (as the flight out Fri. night is after 10 p.m.). So it’s better than not being able to get to St. Croix.

As for accommodations, the smaller number of people traveling this summer helps us in that respect, because most hotels/resorts are probably not close to anywhere near full, so they have availability on short notice. There’s a Holiday Inn in Honolulu with available rooms, but they’re $149/night. NOT! And who stays in a Holiday Inn in paradise??? I found the Aqua Waikiki Marina (which got decent reviews on www.tripadvisor.com – check it out) for $75/night. No, it’s not IDEAL, but for a couple of nights, I’m sure it will do. And I feel fairly sure we can get in and call from the airport and get a room. Worst case scenario: Get in, pick up our rental car, and go someplace where there is wireless internet access (lobby of some hotel? – say we’re waiting for “our friends” to arrive), get online with the laptop and find a place online and make the reservations, then go there and check in.

Hey, at least it’s better than trying to do this in Cancun, where we didn’t speak the language and didn’t have a rental car AND didn’t know where to go to start with. Being in the good ole U.S. of A. has its advantages when you’re a U.S. citizen!! So we certainly will NOT have to spend $260 for one night “all-inclusive” as we had to do in Cancun, when we arrived without plans. I can live on McDonald’s and Burger King for two days!! For $75/night, if we can’t STAND it, we can leave and find somewhere else. These options weren’t open in Cancun.

Now I have to go pack. Maybe I’ll post something here in 24 from Honolulu!! Reportedly the Aqua Waikiki Marina has wireless internet access in all rooms, so after we wear ourselves out GETTING there and exploring for a few hours, by dark, we’ll be back in the room and crashing/burning, but I’ll try to get online and let everyone know if we’re there (WITH Magnum GI, of course! – I’ll post a picture of him sitting on the balcony with the night-time city lights of Honolulu showing!! If we have a balcony . . . . But I’ll be sure not to drop him off the ledge – shades of John Wang!!)

OH!!! I am SO glad I just switched to the laptop to post this message. We are having thunderstorms in Atlanta right now and the power just got knocked out. If I were on the laptop, this entire message would be GONE! I really wouldn’t want to recreate this entire post!!! (Actually, I did lose the internet because the hub for the wireless runs on electricity, but I was typing this in Word on the computer to copy and paste to the forum, so at least I still have this message, even if I don’t have the internet right now.)

Of course, now it’s too dark to see what I’m packing.

Wish us luck! golf

Aha...An Airline Employee, that is why you go standby. I was wondering myself and thinking perhaps you and your Husband had vouchers from being bumped off of flights. Not like the old days is it Golf, I own a small AirFreight comapny and I used to joke with the United Airlines Employees that had become my friends that they lived life like Shieks and Kings. The ones that had been around over 20 years had accumulated almost 4 months in vacation, sick leave and personal time /year. I would say if they were actually at work, they all had there calenders out planning their next exotic trip wherein they would more than likely be in first class, get to their destination and stay at a partnered up property for next to nothing and get a rental car for next to nothing. Not like that any longer is it, in fact I used to get a large coupon book from my Sales rep every year with First Class upgrades, now she takes me to a Bulls Game. Don't get me started on Frequent Flyers either, the bottom feeding scum that expect seats for flying on their comapnies dime!!!!!
Good Luck, I want to see and read about Magnum GI's next adventure with tropical concoctions.............LOL.......

Golf,

I am so sorry that your trip was cancelled. :( :( . Airline employees always seemd to have a great deal; being able to fly off to exotic locations on a whim. It doesn't seem to be easy these days. I keep hoping to see more flights open up, but I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.

Thanks for the tips for traveling without reservations. I need to loosen up and try them. It's going to take some work, but it could make vacations much more spontaneous.

It seems as if flying standby should be easier in the fall. (Kids back in school and all). We will look forward to further adventures with Magnum G.I. :) He is destined to accompany you to Hawaii. He has to wait a bit longer, that's all.

Well, here I sit in my house, typing this response. TECHNICALLY, we might have made the Honolulu flight (other nonrevs did get on), but we ended up not even going to the airport. The St. Croix flight was overbooked and no nonrevs got on, ditto for the first two HNL flights. So had we gotten up at 3 a.m., we would have had to wait at the airport until the 10 a.m. flight -- that probably would have been a miserable wait. AND because of the bad weather here that knocked out my electricity, Larry didn't get home till nearly 2 a.m. He was whupped and in no condition to get up after a couple of hours and go BACK to the airport.

Well, the September trip is only 6-7 weeks away and, MPS, I think you're right that seats then will be more available after school starts (at least I'm hoping so!!). So we just saved about $600 by not doing this trip so we can spend that in Hawaii in September, and it's never a BAD thing to save a little for the NEXT trip. So no adventures for MGI this weekend (though he was hiding in the luggage in the dark last night -- I had to go check to see if he was still wearing his watch and ring, because I hadn't noticed if they had fallen off in the water in the pool in Cancun, and they had not, so he still has his bling).

Thanks for the sympathy and support, guys and gals! We'll get there sooner or later (and, Steve, yes, it IS a lot different now, though we did fly down to St. Thomas last March and Cancun a couple of weeks ago in first class, though we didn't come back in first class). I'm not counting on FC for Hawaii in Sept., though it would be nice for such a long trip (if we can get on the direct flight from ATL to HNL -- however, remember we're smokers, so one stop isn't a real problem for us. That's one small advantage in going to non-U.S. places -- you can smoke, at least outside. However, when we were in Cancun, we were told that was changing THERE in 90 days! Mexico can't control its drug problems or its immigrating population, but it's going to be policing smoking? Go figure.
