I had my own ideas about how it should have been done - as a tie in to the original show where Magnum's daughter Lilly would have taken up the family business after her own stint in the Navy. She could have been a graduate of the Naval Academy, etc. I would have loved for the producers to have bought the old Eve Anderson estate, a.k.a. Robbins Nest. But I guess trying to come up with another story line idea for a helicopter pilot and a club manager wingman to replace T.C. and Rick would have been difficult. It would have been ridiculous for them to be the children of the original T.C. and Rick. Not to mention how do you come up with another Higgins? Although it would have been funny for a new Higgins to have been the child of one of Jonathan's four illegitimate half-brothers.

Anyway, I still don't think that the Magnum reboot is great, and I'm still skeptical about casting Jay Hernandez as Magnum (too old, short), but I'm enjoying the scenery, plots, and cameos. So maybe the reboot is better than no new Magnum at all!
KingKamehameha, nothing wrong with a change of heart.

I think it would be fun to have Roger Moseley come back more often as a recurring character. If I recall correctly he was the barber in one episode in season 1, and I remember thinking he did a good job. Plus the meta aspect of old and new MPI joining forces was nice to see.

I've finally got access to the reboot and... I didn't loathe it, but I don't know if I'll keep watching.

Only seen two episodes so far, however.

There's plenty that I don't like/stuff that doesn't really seem to work (especially the loss of the Magnum/Higgins father-son surrogate aspect) but it's still nice to see the setting and some action too. Ultimately, it just feels 'off' but I'm curious to check out any cameos featuring folks from the original series.
Make it two weeks.

I would recommend Six Paintings, One Frame and The Cat Who Cried Wolf from the first part of the season . From the second part of the season I would go with Ties That Bind and Blood In The Water .

Ok it has been a few years now since the new Magnum PI came and went. I ended up enjoying it once I stopped comparing to the original. In fact, I was sorry they canceled it. The Old Magnum was ground-breaking in the way that it dealt with issues from the Vietnam War like PTSD, racism, MIA (missing in action), women in combat zones, etc. The new Magnum did a nice job with taking up some of those same issues related to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was too bad that there weren't many helicopter action scenes. I assume the cost was just too high. It was great to see Larry Manetti and the late, great Roger E. Mosley make cameos! The show was definitely aimed at a different audience in different times. Growing up in the 1980's, I loved watching Magnum get all the chicks, take his surf-ski out with his Vuarnet sunglasses on, borrow bottles of wine from the Robin's Nest cellar, heat up chili dogs in the microwave, and sport his father's Rolex GMT Master like a boss. I'd guess that everyone who has ever bothered to post on this board owns at least one of the following: Cross of Lorraine Team Ring, Rolex GMT Master watch, Detroit Tigers baseball cap, rubber chicken, gorilla mask, authentic red Paradise Found "Junglebird" Hawaiian shirt (bonus if you own the Star Orchid or Calla Lily shirt, VMO2 Da Nang baseball cap, Puma Easy Rider jogging shoes, King Kamehameha Paddlers softball team t-shirt, Vuarnet sunglasses, a mustache, surf-ski, or a red Ferrari 308!)

IS anyone still updating the main pages for Magnum-Mania? It looks like nothing new has been posted in several years.

Still think a "reboot' should be done with Jason Mamoa as TM, Ricky Gervais as Higgins, not sure about the TC or Rick roles, but same premise as the original, sort of pick up where the original left off...with TM again leaving the Navy and moving back to Robins nest (of course they'd have to build a new one, or use AI to replicate it on screen) but not gonna hold my breath....I just think they missed by a mile with the shiggens role and the casting of Hernandez as TM......oh well....we will always have the disc sets.... :geek:
"C'mon TC...nothing can go wrong!"

In the end I watched every episode of the reboot, and I found it to be like other "filler" shows: not great, not terrible, not memorable, not something I'll miss, not something I'll watch again.

I was pretty severe with my reactions to the reboot when CBS brought it back. Jay and TC would be sporting sloppy 6 day beards in scenes where it called for them to be in full dress uniform,
the mass fire fights with little or no damage to the surrounding area much less human beings after the expenditure of thousands of rounds from weapons on full automatic that spat out rounds
without running out. Lenkov and his team not getting that the premise of Magnum and friends even being in Hawaii was to turn the page, put behind them the war and the bloodshed and heal.
All Lenkov could see was "hey lets make big boom booms and keep focus on the service angle" instead of the next stage of the guys journey.
Not to mention Lenkov making an utter hash of the Luther Gillis character, beyond stupid. And having heavily armed and geared up CIA agents storm a house when they aren't allowed to
operate on US soil, the FBI insisted that was it's exclusive turf when the CIA was founded.
But I still watched if only to make fun and to see beautiful Hawaii. But I was wrong.
I went in angry from the get go because it wasn't our classic Magnum, from the casting on down to everything else. I wasn't being fair, firstly because there is only one Tom Selleck
and stars like him are special and just can't be replicated, like a Duke Wayne or Eastwood or Sidney Poitier.

It's 40 years!!! on from when classic Magnum started, and as noted in an above post the target audience is much different and the times have moved on.
After watching the whole series again - 5 episodes every Friday night on the ION network - it is better than I originally thought, once I divorced any connection in my mind with the original.
The cast is always in there pitching - Perdita is an excellent actress - and whatever Jay's short comings he is a likable actor and respects the material. The new Rick is a much better actor
than Larry, no question(though I prefer Larry because he was the original). I think the new TC was just grabbing a check the 1st season, but after the series was renewed he did display his
acting chops.
With Lenkov sent packing, seasons 4 and 5 were far better with Jay giving his 2 cents behind the scenes and very effectively directing/producing a number of episodes.
Pretty Perdita also upgraded with extremely successful cosmetic surgery, top and bottom, wow. I guess it's not PC to notice that but if she decided it was a good thing to do
I'm not going to argue the point.
Also, the last seasons featured much more Magnum as PI, plus charming wind up scenes in Rick's bar, many times with local bands performing(shades of Hawaiian Eye).
Also much more humor, Higgins and Magnum undercover in chicken costumes was hilarious!
My opinion is it's a fair Friday night adventure show, with a likable cast, perfect for unwinding after a hard day at work.
