I know there was a "current shows" thread (or something like that) at some point, but I didn't find it.
Anyway, are there any good current-run detective shows on TV today? What other shows -- even if they are older, as long as they can be streamed -- do you enjoy today?
For me, I enjoy Water Rats; someone on here pointed me to that show. I'm going through Magnum, p.i. My current run shows are Chicago Fire & The Rookie. I'd love another detective show.
Hi Eagle,
Good onya, Eagle, "Water Rats" is a bonzer TV series. It's about the Sydney Harbour Water Police, both the rank and file and the detectives, set around one of the most beautiful
harbors in the world, with first rate actors and writing. A few years back one of the networks was running it out of order which caused confusion to one of the posters here after I
recommended it.
Usually available on You Tube and other sites. The
Australian Television Information Archive is the best place online for info on Down Under TV series, complete with
episode breakdowns.
I would recommend reading it's episode guide as you watch each Water Rats, both to make sure you are watching in the correct order and for the background information.
Water Rats, like Magnum, builds on previous episodes and relationships.
Unlike many of the much heralded Brit cop series such as "Happy Valley" which I just watched on ACORN(season 1 only, I couldn't take any more), they don't paint every character as flawed and
unlikable and seemingly without any set of principles or humor! Everything in the UK is dark and a horror and corrupt, in their view. John Ford knew better, that's why he'd inject humor in his
films to alleviate the darkness, even in The Searchers.
Well to hell with that, these Aussie cops are likable and crack jokes, the sun is shining - Sydney's Bondi Beach! - and they have comradeship and fun along with the drama and dark moments.
Series lead and babe Catherine Clements usually got the best lines - "There's no future in the past."
In one of the last episodes the cops host a wake for their dead buddy in their local bar, singing John Williamson's "True Blue", a great tune, almost Aussie soul music, a celebration of
the people, it's the epitome of Fair Dinkum.
So if you are tired of seeing Toronto fill in for NYC or other metros in our crime dramas, or the 10,000th episode of Law and Order, check out something different
with scenes of people/places you have never seen before, while learning to appreciate another country and it's culture. Plus it's cracking good entertainment.
