Current shows
I know there was a "current shows" thread (or something like that) at some point, but I didn't find it.
Anyway, are there any good current-run detective shows on TV today? What other shows -- even if they are older, as long as they can be streamed -- do you enjoy today?
For me, I enjoy Water Rats; someone on here pointed me to that show. I'm going through Magnum, p.i. My current run shows are Chicago Fire & The Rookie. I'd love another detective show.

Good onya, Eagle, "Water Rats" is a bonzer TV series. It's about the Sydney Harbour Water Police, both the rank and file and the detectives, set around one of the most beautiful
harbors in the world, with first rate actors and writing. A few years back one of the networks was running it out of order which caused confusion to one of the posters here after I
recommended it.
Usually available on You Tube and other sites. The Australian Television Information Archive is the best place online for info on Down Under TV series, complete with
episode breakdowns.
I would recommend reading it's episode guide as you watch each Water Rats, both to make sure you are watching in the correct order and for the background information.
Water Rats, like Magnum, builds on previous episodes and relationships.
Unlike many of the much heralded Brit cop series such as "Happy Valley" which I just watched on ACORN(season 1 only, I couldn't take any more), they don't paint every character as flawed and
unlikable and seemingly without any set of principles or humor! Everything in the UK is dark and a horror and corrupt, in their view. John Ford knew better, that's why he'd inject humor in his
films to alleviate the darkness, even in The Searchers.
Well to hell with that, these Aussie cops are likable and crack jokes, the sun is shining - Sydney's Bondi Beach! - and they have comradeship and fun along with the drama and dark moments.
Series lead and babe Catherine Clements usually got the best lines - "There's no future in the past."
In one of the last episodes the cops host a wake for their dead buddy in their local bar, singing John Williamson's "True Blue", a great tune, almost Aussie soul music, a celebration of
the people, it's the epitome of Fair Dinkum.
So if you are tired of seeing Toronto fill in for NYC or other metros in our crime dramas, or the 10,000th episode of Law and Order, check out something different
with scenes of people/places you have never seen before, while learning to appreciate another country and it's culture. Plus it's cracking good entertainment.

Re: Current shows
Hi guys,
The complete series of two 1970's detective tv shows, Vegas (starring Robert Urich) and Harry O (David Janssen) are available on youtube.
For a new "detective" show try "Bad Monkey" starring Vince Vaughn (back to his best). Available for streaming and set in Florida. Enjoy.

Harry O is my second favorite show after The Rockford Files, then MPI. I bought the DVD’s quite a few years ago and have run through the series several times. There are also two different pilots, Such Dust as Dreams are Made On and Smile Jenny, You’re Dead.terryfromkerry wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 12:09 pm Hi guys,

I’ve brought up the show a few times here on the forum in discussion, but know one has ever seen it. If they had, it was many years ago and they had fuzzy memories of it, though most remembered it fondly. Maybe the availability on YouTube will change that.
Have you watched the whole series?

Harry O the series can be watched here, the two TV movie pilots are on You Tube. Later on in the series proper one of the TV movies was recut/edited/scenes added to, to create a regular episode.
One of the pilots was so-so, hence they made another one.

If memory serves there are two Harry O threads on Magnum Mania.

Re: Current shows
This is one of my favorite scenes from the first pilot as Harry visits Occidental College to find some clues about his client. He talks to a young co-ed in an office about said client and responds to her flirting thusly:
Harry Orwell: How old are you?
Girl Clerk: 19
Harry Orwell: You ever go fishing?
Girl Clerk: I'd love to.
Harry Orwell: Sometimes when you go fishing you catch a little fish.
Girl Clerk: Hmmm
Harry Orwell: You can't keep those; you gotta throw 'em back.
[pauses]
Harry Orwell: If they're too young.
Girl Clerk: You have to?
Harry Orwell: [Nods slightly] It's a pity.

I am 6 episodes into Season 2. The series is completely new to me. It only became available on youtube quite recently. Like you I rate the show very highly. I am delighted of course to find a "new" show from that era. I have been reading some trivia about the show on IMDB. David Janssen seems to have been a really nice decent man who like Garner and Selleck knew how important it was to have a good relationship on set with cast and crew.

My wife and I are watching "Elementary" a current day take on Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. Set in NYC Holmes is a recovering drug addict and consultant to NYPD. I didn't think I'd like it, but it is very entertaining.

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I was inspired to go back and watch the first pilot again yesterday. I may watch the first episode today, Gertrude. The episode was nominated for an Emmy in the writing category. Anthony Zerbe won an Emmy for supporting actor in the second season.terryfromkerry wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 6:39 pmHi Pahonu,Pahonu wrote: ↑Wed Nov 27, 2024 3:47 pmHarry O is my second favorite show after The Rockford Files, then MPI. I’m interested in your thoughts on the show. Any favorite episodes that stand out to you? How about alll the changes made halfway through season one and then more at the beginning of season two? The network higher ups kept tinkering with it and even as it grew a larger audience then cancelled it. Janssen was apparently very disillusioned by the decision and vowed not to do another TV series.
I really like how they used the voiceover in the show, particularly early on. It didn’t advance the plot like so many do, but rather clues you in on Harry’s thoughts and feelings. The mystery writer Max Allan Collins calls it the best use of voiceover in TV history. I don’t disagree. The opening of Gertrude is a great example of it.

Re: Current shows
Please excuse my delayed reply. My favourite episode is one of the pilot episodes. Smile Jenny, You're Dead. I viewed it a second time a few weeks ago . Interesting to see the 25 year old Andrea Marcovicci who would later co-star in 2 MPI episodes and of course a very young Jodie Foster. John Anderson and Clu Gulager also among the co-stars. This is part of the fun for me watching old movies or tv shows. I mean of course recognising the actors who went on to fame or went on to have a long (or indeed short in some cases) career in film or tv. I noted the changes you mention but I would watch David Janssen painting a fence. I have been a fan since watching The Fugitive weekly as a kid in the '60s. So I weathered the changes. Now,where I am in the second season I have accepted Anthony Zerbe's character replacing Henry Darrow's. The repartee between Harry and Zerbe's Lt. Trench is a welcome and enjoyable dynamic. I did not realise until you mentioned Zerbe won an emmy on this show.Pahonu wrote: ↑Thu Nov 28, 2024 9:22 pmI’m glad you’re enjoying it! Re: Current shows
Hi again Pahonu,
I do not want to reveal any spoilers to any magnum mania members who might intend to view the series. Hence I will take care. I am always impressed with the script writing. Tonight I watched S2 E8 Tender Killing Care. Consistently the writing is pitch perfect on any aspect, the drama, the tragedy and or the humour. One example.
Harry's mechanic is in a prison cell. Its a serious offence. Harry visits.
Mechanic Vance: Harry .....you ..... you can get me out of this ?
Harry: I'll have to, you're the only mechanic that will work on my car !
Harry is reassuring his friend with reluctant humour. Its not that Harry is convinced he can but he'll do his damned best. The humour hides his doubts but reassures.

It’s a very good episode about a little depicted problem at the time, elder abuse. The writing in the series is nothing short of outstanding. I don’t want to spoil anything for you either about the relationship with his mechanic Spencer, but it is very well done in season two. This is his third mechanic after Roy Bardello in San Diego and Clarence in the early episodes of the LA episodes.terryfromkerry wrote: ↑Sun Dec 01, 2024 10:53 pm Hi again Pahonu,
