Daniel Boone

#1 Post by Frodoleader »

Whenever I can, I like to catch an episode of the Daniel Boone show, starring Fess Parker that aired from 1964-1970. This was one of my favorite shows growing up as a kid. I won't try to go into the particulars about the show - there are a number of websites dedicated to it: although none as good as Magnum Mania!
The show featured Parker as Boone. Parker made his name playing Davy Crockett for Disney in the '50's. His sidekicks were Mingo, Yadkin, his wfie Rebecca and his two children.
Daniel Boone (the TV show) to me is an excellent example of how Hollywood changes history to fit entertainment needs. For a start, the Mingo character, played by Ed Ames. An Oxford educated Cherokee in colonial era America? Possible, but not very likely. My contention is that due to racial predujice of the era, Mingo would not have lasted too long. Secondly, Rebecca is played (by Patricia Blair) as a typical suburban housewife. As for his family, Boone had ten children, but only two are in the show. The daughter, played by Veronica Cartwright, disappears from the series during the second season, with no explanation.
But the final straw for me is if you watch the second season on, when it was shot in color, Boonsborough is located in a southwestern US desert area, with real live mesas in the background!
Oh well. I still like the show and overlook these idiosyncracies. I don't get to watch it much now. Our RTV affiliate airs it at 7 am, after I have left for work. It is still fun though.

That does bring back memories. I watched the show occasionally as so many of us "boomers" watched Fess Parker in Davy Crockett on The Wonderfull World Of Disney and even went around wearing coon skin caps. I forgot he was in the movie Old Yeller and, who didn't cry at the end of Old Yeller......Come on, admit it.........

Darby Hinton played Daniel Boone's son on the show. Years later he appeared in Magnum P.I.'s "Beauty Knows No Pain" as Marcia Wallace's fiance.

I feel a new Magnum P.I. version of the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon coming on!

I have a feeling we could certainly link any actor to MPI in six steps or less.

Anyone have a photo or screen capture of Darby Hinton?

BTW, you could gather from my original post that I don't like Daniel Boone (the tv show). I do, its just after so many years and being a bit more cynical, I am harder to convince when it comes to historic accuracy and the such.

Sorry, Darby Hinton didn't play Marcia Wallace's fiance Roger (that was Jim Westin). Darby played Buddy Moran, the mafia hitman who was chasing Roger. My bad.

R.I.P.

Fess Parker lived in my hometown for many years, until he passed on. It's too bad I never got the chance to meet him, though.
I just don't give a damn!

I got within about 3 feet of him one time....he was a guest at chapel on the campus of Abilene Christian University when I was a student there...he was on the floor of the coliseum visiting with any and all who wanted to come by...extremely nice....BIG, BIG man....that would have been '85, '86 or '87. Can't remember.
