A Hawaiian Nightmare

James Olson and Sheree North—a goddess if there ever was one—make welcome appearances in this atmospheric-as-hell episode, and an episode I’ve grown to appreciate a lot more in recent years, as I find myself immersed in the rainy, moody, Hilo environment…I just love it.

I also dig Bernie and Doris Brown’s modernistic pad. Felice Orlandi, who also appears in this episode as the scummy Vince, appeared with Sheree North in The Outfit (1973), a cracking good crime drama that starred Robert Duval and Robert Ryan; I highly recommend the film.

On an amusing note, Chin wears the rust-colored necktie, soon to give way to the omnipresent blue tie he would wear for seemingly the entire seventh season.

Yep, I definitely dig the rainy moody opening with Bernie and his cohorts planting the bombs. Especially accompanied by a catchy Morton Stevens score! Felice Orlandi was a fixture in 70s TV crime dramas. Love his name by the way. You almost expect him to speak with a strong Italiano accent, like he just stepped off the boat or something. I mean with a name like that. Instead he speaks with a normal 'American' accent. :D He was also the protected witness who gets wasted in BULLITT, whose murder Steve McQueen is investigating.

Steal Now - Pay Later

Excellent job by Casey Kasem.

All-in-all pretty average episode though.

Loved the ending (last scene). They always nail the endings.
Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

A surpisingly good performance from Casey Kasem as Larry Swift, although his hair and clothes should have made even the gaudiest of ‘70s denizens cringe! Ray Danton (and his sunglasses) were also excellent. I like that Danton’s character, Ron Colby, had a different woman on his arm in nearly every scene. His annoyance at Swift causes Colby to angrily brush away one of the girls.

I always get a kick out of those super Hawaiian bars, restaurants, and lounges seen on the show and in this episode in particular. I remember there being places like that where I live when I was a kid. Sadly, they are no longer in such abundance.

McGarrett’s last line had me laughing out loud.

Fun episode.

Ray Danton’s sunglasses and ladies are pretty impressive in Cloth of Gold too!

We have a handful of tiki bars/restaurants around still in SoCal. Ironically, more authentic Hawaiian food has become available today with the L&L Hawaiian chain and a few other independent restaurants, plus the popularity of poke now. The tiki craze in the past, while fun, was a bit of tropical fantasy more than anything else.

…and it’s that fun Tiki craze of the past that I want! I’m fortunate to live just a few miles from the storied and celebrated Mai Kai in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which has been closed since last November. However, I’ve purchased their famous drinks to go, which will have to tide me over until their reopening, should it ever happen.

Tiki is a lot of fun. We lost Trader Vic’s several years ago and Don the Beachcomber’s not too long before the pandemic. The original Don’s started in Hollywood right after Prohibition ended in 1933! We had one just a couple of miles down PCH from us and they would also host reggae shows on the weekends. We saw some pretty good acts over the years. They moved the shows to a place almost right across PCH from us but I missed the tiki drinks and atmosphere. My wife and I are hoping the shows come back when things get back to normal.

Bomb, Bomb, Who’s Got the Bomb?

Such is my love for this season that I would give this less-than-a-masterpiece a 7/10. I like it more for its very “Hawaii Five-0-ness” more than the story. There are many Five-0 “stock actors” who appear in this episode, making it an “all hands on deck” episode: Lynne Ellen Hollinger, Danny Kamekona, Winston Char, Seth Sakai, Linda Ryan, Electra Gallas, and Beau Vanden Ecker. Linda Ryan plays a psychiatrist again and speaks in “sophisticated” tones.

The great William Windom is a legend of ‘65-‘75 television, so his role here is a welcome one. Marc “Alternate Universe Luke Skywalker” Singer is also in this, though hus finest Five-0 role would be in season 8’s Target? The Lady.

McGarrett is grammatically incorrect when he says “…that It didn't stop whomever it was who killed Miss Evans.” McGarrett also says “case-ette” again.

I dig the casual Five-0 clothes the team wears, especially Danno’s blue-and-green shirt. McGarrett sports his “cozy” navy blue cardigan.
Senator Harlan (William Windom) wears a crazy long-sleeve brown-and-white Hawaiian shirt in one scene.

The impressive and incredibly atmospheric musical score by Jerrold Immel is especially effective during the bomb defusing scene at the 18 minute mark. There is another impressive and funky cue heard around the 39 minute mark, when the team is in pursuit of the senator.

Yep, I agree that this one is average. Never cared much for it. But I understand that it has its share of fans, which I always found quite perplexing. Outside of a good Richard Shores score (which goes back to season 4) there's not much there to really grab you. Okay, Ray Danton in his last of 3 appearances is cool sporting those sunglasses and Casey Kasem gets a bigger role this time around. But I don't really care too much about the stolen merchandise story. In some ways it's similar to season 4's "Air Cargo -- Dial for Murder" which also dealt with thefts of shipments but that one was more interesting because it had the added bonus of a secondary story that involved a man desperately waiting for medication to arrive to save his dying wife, which of course was purposely diverted by the receptionist (Marion Ross) working for the hijacking ring. Of course the medication didn't arrive in time and the wife died, which led the husband to seek revenge against the leader of the ring. But there's nothing that interesting in this story. Coincidentally, I believe it's the same Richard Shores score in both episodes!

Yes, the ending with the tape recorder was great! :D

P.S. Kam Fong's son Dennis Chun plays one of the hijackers.

Hey, so does this mean I have 2 reviewers to reply to now? You and T.Q.? As if I didn't already have too little time on my hands. :? But it's nice to read more Five-O reviews. :) Anyway I love this episode and don't care what the nay-sayers say! It's probably my #3 for the whole season. It's tense throughout, especially that elevator finale!! William Windom really was in *EVERY* TV show at the time, drama or sitcom. Isn't Melody Patterson (Mrs. James MacArthur) also in this one? Her third and final time? I agree about the Jerrold Immel score - while I don't remember much about it I do remember it sounding tense and suspenseful during the bomb defusing at the house.

So now we wait for T.Q.'s review? For once I'm ahead of him?????????

A couple of “Bomb, Bomb” thoughts I forgot to mention:

Five-0 stock performer Norman Dupont appears as Harlan Henderson’s father in the flashback scenes.

Jerrold Immel employs a funky drummer cue as the radio/bomb is hoisted away by the helicopter which segues nicely into a slowed-down, “heroic” arrangement of the Five-0 theme; excellent use of music!

Bomb, Bomb, Who’s Got the Bomb?

Good episode.

I liked it.

Young Marc Singer was a surprise 10 years before "V".

Guess he's older than I thought.

Looks like we're all caught up with T.Q. here. :D Glad you enjoyed this one! And you missed William Windom as an MPI connection. I of course already posted my thoughts on this episode above.

Yep.

Staring right at him and didn't clue in.

That's what 12 years and 42 lbs. does to all of us.

Yeah, I really don't know what happened to Windom. Too many donuts I guess. He went from an average looking guy in the 70s (Five-O, Streets of San Fran, Columbo) to a really pudgy guy with several chins in about a decade. Check out his recurring role in MURDER, SHE WROTE where he only got pudgier and pudgier. Until he was downright fat. :?
