Enjoyed both.

The $100,000 Nickel

Fun episode.

The sleight of hand scene was great. Yep, the stocking would have got me too.

Chasing that dang nickel around was entertaining.

Arnie (Eugene Troobnick) did a fine job.

The Flip Side Is Death

I always like heist stories when done well.

Hiding the loot in the 8-track tapes. Good idea.

And all the betrayal between the crooks. Good stuff.

Turtle Bay? Think so. Enjoyed the filming location.

Don Stroud. An actor instantly recognizable. Of course, with my memory, no clue from where (in case it's famous movies don't get mad at me people).
The $100,000 Nickel
Yep, I always liked this one. The chase after the nickel gets more and more harried. You mentioned Eugene Troobnick as Arnie (he's good) but the real scene stealer is Victor Buono as Eric Damian! He's always great in everything he turns up in. Hammy perhaps but that's his trademark. Doesn't McGarrett call him a "fat cat"? To me he's part fat cat, part sly fox. His scenes with McGarrett are priceless! He's so oily and transparent that McGarrett can't even keep a straight face talking to him. The ending with the coin hidden behind the ear was perhaps a bit forced (how did McGarrett know?) but it was fun, in keeping with the episode. This featured the second music score by Bruce Broughton (after "The Finishing Touch") and he was actually Emmy nominated for this one! Season 6 actually had a record 3 nominations for best score - this one, Don Ray's "Nightmare in Blue", and of course Morton Steven's "Hookman" which won the Emmy.

The Flip Side Is Death
Yep, this is another great heist episode. Love the military convoy setup and with the 4 guys wearing those gas masks they looked kinda creepy, especially at the very start. Did you notice Morton Stevens' score from "Hookman" playing all throughout this episode? Especially during the convoy scenes at the start. Just love that theme! It actually has this cool militaristic sound so it fit those scenes like a glove! The 8-track tapes scheme and the crooks double-crossing each other were all great ideas. Loved that it was shot on the North Shore at Turtle Bay.

Don Stroud (who was actually born in Honolulu and was a surfer in his youth) is of course a very recognizable character actor who appeared in pretty much every detective, cop, action, adventure show of the 70s and 80s, including 3 times on FIVE-O. His best episode is yet to come!! :) He was in a few films with Clint Eastwood (COOGAN'S BLUFF, JOE KIDD) always playing the baddie, THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY with Gary Busey, the Timothy Dalton Bond adventure LICENCE TO KILL, and other films. He lost an eye in the 90s after coming to the aid of someone getting mugged in NYC - he got stabbed ten times but survived. The last thing I saw him in was a small part in DJANGO UNCHAINED. He's the sheriff who's really an outlaw with a bounty on his head who gets shot by Christoph Waltz near the start.

In one of the reviews of The Flip Side.
In keeping with the music theme it should be noted that this episode was directed by Paul Stanley. I wonder if he ever directed Jean Simmons in anything?
Paul Stanley directed quite a few Five-O's including my personal fave - "Rest in Peace, Somebody". And actually yes he did direct Jean Simmons in season 10's "The Cop on the Cover". :D

The Banzai Pipeline

Just an okay episode.

Loved the locations and the surfing scenes.

Perry King did a good job. I had to look up the 80s show he was in. Forgot the name. Riptide. Remember liking it as a young teeny bopper but I didn't see many episodes.

MPI: Jack Hogan, Josie Over

I watched Riptide as a teen also and enjoyed it. I have all three seasons on DVD. It had two pretty solid seasons that hold up reasonably well, but it was tinkered with constantly. By season three it was pretty mundane and facing the juggernaut that was Moonlighting. It was canceled thereafter, but not before making a pretty good episode that spoofed the new series. The reason I returned to the series, having almost completely forgotten about it, is explained below.

Somewhere on this forum I posted pictures of the actual boat Riptide, a 53 foot ELCO motor yacht from the 30’s. Quite a few summers ago I woke up to see the boat tied up to the guest dock by our place. She was with about a dozen other wooden boats on a cruise of the SoCal coast. I walked over to see her and talked to the owner. He gave me a tour and some background on her. At the time she was slipped in Wilmington nearby, but now operates out of Puget Sound somewhere. Such a beautiful boat… but the maintenance!!!

The other brother, the surfer, was Nicholas Hammond, one of the Von Trapp children and Spider-Man from the 70’s live-action TV series.

It's an episode I like more and more each time I watch it. The surfing action and those waves are obviously a big selling point with this episode but I really like it when they get away from Honolulu once in a while. Here, like in "The Flip Side is Death", the action is almost exclusively on the North Shore - at the Pipe. Well, at least the surfing footage is supposed to be at the Pipeline. But the rest of the locations are almost all near beaches and water and brush area and then there's the shack where the 2 brothers live. I like all these out-of-the-way spots. I like to think most of this was shot on the North Shore. It also has a pretty grim ending which always gets me (a common theme with a lot of season 6) when the 2 brothers don't make it. You don't expect both of them to die like that. Usually the good guys win and the bad guys lose, right? Well, not here. It really gives you a jolt.

You mentioned Josie Over. Did you mean Elissa Dulce? The girlfriend of the big ape Andrew Koa.

Yep, and that's another MPI tie-in T.Q. missed. Hammond played the Troubshaws' son in "Foiled Again". :)

Josie Over listed as Jewelry Clerk.

Can't believe I missed Nicholas Hammond.

I was doing my weights and I watch in between sets and listen/glance over when doing them.

I saw him briefly, recognized him, but didn't really clue in it was Friedrich/Troubshaw.

Pahonu, was Riptide popular before Moonlighting or just average?

I always liked this one for the beach locations and surfing too. Nice change of pace.

It was a mid season replacement that got picked up the following season after a solid start. It was no big hit but it was entertaining and reasonably popular. Lots of action and adventure on the water and at the marina with boats, helicopters, and car chases. They filmed a lot in King Harbor nearby where the boat was slipped. The Queen Mary here in Long Beach makes an appearance and they also filmed at Santa Catalina Island of the coast. The third season brought some significant changes as they tried to compete with Moonlighting, but to no avail.

It has tie-ins to MPI also. In the third season the police detective that would harass the guys, Lt. Quinlin, was changed to a more pleasant character who actually helped them out sometimes. She was played by June Chadwick of This is Spinal Tap fame, but also was in Echoes of the Mind as a stewardess and The Case of the Red-Faced Thespian as the Lady Cynthia Warrington Stout. Marta Dubois, Cyndi Pickett, and Kay Lenz also appeared. Probably a lot more than that as so many 80’s TV character actors appeared as was common.

There was also an episode with two female detectives that was an attempt at a spin-off. One of them was Stepfanie Kramer, later of Hunter.

I also enjoyed two different episodes with Cesar Romero as a sort of Italian Jacques Cousteau type.

One Born Every Minute

Very good.

Wasn't too sure first 4 or 5 minutes but very good. I liked it.

The entire set-up and execution of the scam of Harry Maguire was very well done.

Poor Harry. Can't believe he jumped.

And Connors' reaction was so narcissistic. I thought he would feel bad but nope. Don't remember the line but something about "me" or "I" as if old Harry was inconsequential to anything but his own plans.

Ed Flanders was good. Lynnette Mettey was good. Knew her from M*A*S*H.

McGarrett's last line was epic. The dumb cop thing was a bit strange considering Connor called him super smart earlier.

MPI: Bunch we've seen before.

Indeed. An excellent scam episode! After the first couple is scammed and we shift to Harry it really takes off and we're hooked, just as Harry is. What unfolds is a very interesting tale, something we never saw before or will see again on this show. When poor Harry jumped to his death that was gut-wrenching. Hated his nagging wife - total lack of sympathy. There's also a great scene before he jumps - he runs out of the restaurant with they key dangling on his finger. You can almost sense his heart racing. Total despair moment for poor Harry. That moment always stuck with me. Ed Flanders played a real scumbag here - total narcissist. He can't believe Harry jumped but there's zero sympathy. At the end he can't believe he got nailed by a "dumb cop". Hope McGarrett got him for murder!

Lots of stock actors here - Tommy Fujiwara, Jimmy Borges, Douglas Mossman, John Stalker, Patricia Herman, etc.

Hey Ivan, I just learned an interesting story about two of our favorite shows, H5-O and Rockford. The Rockford Files debuted on Fridays at 9:00 in 1974 and finished the season ranked 12th overall behind H5-O on Tuesdays at 9:00 in 10th. CBS was dominating the ratings at the time with eight of the top ten shows and decided to challenge NBC’s Rockford by moving H5-O from its lead in MASH, to the same Friday time slot as Rockford. Both shows’ ratings dropped dramatically as they cannibalized each other’s audiences. Rockford dropped to 32nd and H5-O to 39th. ABC moved the initially low performing Six-Million Dollar Man out of Friday and it’s ratings started improving. They replaced it with the ABC Friday Night Movie which finished better, just behind H5-O at 40th! Before the season ended, CBS moved H5-O to Thursdays at 9:00.

Secret Witness

Pretty good episode.

The opening hit and chase was well done.

Mark Lenard did a great job. Creepy bad guy.

Another great scene in McGarrett's office. A lot of great dialogue happens in McGarrett's office.

Liked the heartless hitman character. I think he would have put a few extra in the kid in the apartment.

Got a kick out of:

Today's Special: Chicken Fried Steak $1.75

Time's change.

William Smith, who played Detective James "Kimo" Carew on Hawaii 5-0 passed away on July 5. He was one of those character actors you immediately recognized but might have trouble
recalling his name. Known for his muscular body, he was best known for his time on the Western "Laredo". I loved that series when I was young but I saw again it on the INSP network and
it wasn't very good, or rather it's obvious it was made to appeal to teens or even younger folk.
Smith was terrific playing bad guys, in the Rockford Files pilot he memorably got beat up in the mens room of a sleazy theater by Rockford after Jim soaped up the floor and Smith slipped
and wound up helpless on his back. When Rockford ties him up and threatens to leave him there for the perverts unless he coughs up some info, the look on Smith's face is priceless.
Though the PC police now usually bleep out some of the dialog.
He was also known for his role in Any Which Way You Can with Clint Eastwood. Smith was an Air Force vet and was it's weightlifting champion.
RIP Big Guy.

He was a prolific actor to say the least with excellent guest appearances in more 70’s and 80’s TV series than I can count. You’re absolutely right the he’s recognizable from all that work... even if the name isn’t remembered. He seemed to be in a lot more low budget productions from the 90’s on, unfortunately.

That Rockford scene you described so well was the pilot episode with Lindsay Wagner. He appeared in an episode of Kolchak: The Night Stalker that I enjoy. He’s not a baddie, but an interesting none-stereotypical Native American with information about folklore that Kolchak uses to reveal the “monster” of the episode.
