TQ, I was looking for this episode to stream and realized you’re only about a dozen episodes from one that has several scenes at Pahonu. It’s called Cloth of Gold and you get to see two of the three upstairs bedrooms in the main house.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Yep, Lenny the shrink. Any episode that had some sort of nut or weirdo you could expect Fred Sadoff as Lenny to spout off some psychological mumbo-jumbo as to why the perp is doing what he's doing. Actually I'm sure they got this from HFO because it did this ALL the time! Except HFO didn't have a "regular" shrink on staff but different ones rotating, from Danny Kamekona to Linda Ryan to others. Usually local stock actors played those parts.Pahonu wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 1:36 amI’m not recalling this episode at all?!?!? I must have missed it somehow. I’ve never done a start to finish run through of the series, but over the years I watched it a LOT. I’ve missed a few it seems, and some good ones. Burns’ character was totally a creeper in Act of Duty. Fred Sadoff always made an appearance as the psychologist in episodes like that one. Brenda Vaccaro was also good as the rookie cop. I want to see the H5O episode now! Is it streaming anywhere?IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:25 amYep it's FANTASTIC!!! For a while it was my absolute favorite until an even better one came along a few episodes later. You'll get to it!![]()
Anyway apparently this episode was deemed too violent to broadcast again (as a summer repeat, I think) so they actually sort-of "redid" this episode the following season (as "Little Girl Blue") with a new story and actors but the same premise about being holed up in a Diamond Head bunker and shooting at the cops below. I suppose that one was a little less violent (maybe?) but I didn't see a reason to do this personally. Actually I saw "Little Girl Blue" first and loved it right away!! It was later that I saw "Candy and a Gun" and realized that this one came first and actually has a harder edge to it. Michael Burns playing the sniper was a total wacko! He also played a creepy serial rapist in an episode of STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO called "Act of Duty" (one of my favorites) - I'm sure Pahonu remembers.![]()
Yep, the ending was pretty powerful. Sounds like he had a mother fixation. All he wanted was attention from her and to be loved. But she was a real cold B.
Found it for two bucks on Amazon Prime. I’ll check it out soon, I think.
Definitely check out ...And I Want Some Candy and a Gun That Shoots! It's superb!
And yes "Cloth of Gold" is another great one! Very mysterious until the end.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
T.Q., you're on season 4 now and I just realized that I never gave my ranking for any of these episodes. A few years back us Five-O fans decided to rank the episodes for each season, from best to worst. It wasn't an easy task for sure. It's easy for me to come up with my top 5 for each season, but actually ranking all the episodes in a season wasn't so easy. However, I managed to come up with a list for each season and saved it. I'll post the first 3 seasons and then I'll post the rest as you proceed.
Season 1
----------
1. The Box
2. Deathwatch
3. Yesterday Died and Tomorrow Won't Be Born
4. Tiger by the Tail
5. One for the Money
6. Full Fathom Five
7. King of the Hill
8. Cocoon
9. Strangers in Our Own Land
10. Six Kilos (McGarrett undercover)
11. And They Painted Daisies on His Coffin
12. Pray Love Remember, Pray Love Remember
13. The Ways of Love (McGarrett undercover - first time)
14. Samurai
15. Twenty-Four Karat Kill
16. Along Came Joey
17. Up Tight
18. The Big Kahuna
19. By the Numbers
20. Face of the Dragon
21. Once Upon a Time (Parts 1 & 2)
22. No Blue Skies
23. Not That Much Different
Mind you, these aren't set in stone. The top few are pretty firm, as are the bottom few. But it's always those in the middle that are hardest to rank. They're the good ones that aren't quite great, so you end up comparing one good one vs. another good one vs. yet another good one.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Thanks for the list.
Two episode working out yesterday.
Air Cargo - Dial for Murder
Was an okay episode. Bit slow. Wish the bad guys had blown up at the end in dramatic fashion. Too risky for the early 70s?
We see Mrs. Cunningham again, aiyyyy.

Magnum Sighting: James Hong.
For a Million... Why Not?
Enjoyed this one quite a bit.
I like the caper episodes and it was executed really well with the getaway.
Good ending too.
Would you do it again Danno?.
"For $182.50 a week take-home, 'Why Not?'"
Magnum sighting: Doc Ibold AGAIN!

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
For a Million... Why Not? is definitely the better of the two. Five-O was very good with its heist episodes and this one delivers! And again Al Harrington as a baddie (remember "No Bottles"?
). And yes Doc Ibold too!
Poor guy gets a bullet in the gut for his troubles.
That said, "Air Cargo" is very good too. I especially love the beginning in the teaser where the poor guy gets those heavy crates dumped on him. And I love how his terrified scream trails on even as the opening wave of the title sequence begins to roll. Really cool how they did that. That whole sequence is very suspenseful! The main plot with the cargo thefts I'm not too crazy about but it's the parallel plot where the poor guy desperately tries to get medicine for his dying wife that's really good. Heartbreaking when she dies and you know it could have been prevented if Mrs. C from Happy Days didn't purposely divert that shipment. Marion Ross was again very good here and especially at the end when she breaks down after McG grills her real good. Yep I wish the bad guys got theirs in the end too! I'm trying to remember if the bad guy's house at the end isn't the one at Hanapepe Loop (or is it Place?) that's seen in other Five-O episodes and on MPI too (in "All Roads Lead to Floyd" for instance, as well as the pilot of the reboot) that has a cliff and beach behind it. I was there, you know. Ok, I'm starting to sound like Higgy-baby.

I've been a big Five-O fan for years and I own all twelve seasons on DVD. My favorite seasons are the first four.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
You must be a Kono fan then.

One thing I really do like about the first 4 seasons is that they had the teaser (or cold open) at the start before the title sequence, which really worked well to grab the viewer's attention. Starting with season 5 the show would kick off with the title sequence, no teaser. I guess that became the norm in the 70s and then the 80s. But then in the 90s most shows reverted to the cold open style again, even until today. The teaser/cold open first became popular in the 60s and then for whatever reason it mostly disappeared for the next 2 decades, before making a return.
Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
You're right about that. I always wished that Zulu had a little bit more to do on the show and also would have never had to leave after four seasons.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Hi Ivan,
The house used in the ending is located on Hanapepe PL however that isn't the same house used in.. All Roads Lead to Floyd.. The Floyd house is on Poipu PL. One block away.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
You're probably aware of the fact that Zulu was fired after 4 seasons and that's why he had to be replaced. It's funny because Jack Lord didn't like Al Harrington who replaced him (as Ben) but it was producer Leonard Freeman's call so Jack was overruled on that. But as soon as Freeman died and Lord took over the show poor Al was gone. From Al's recollections Lord didn't like that Al was too tall - I guess Lord didn't want anyone to upstage him. But then Zulu and Lord didn't get along either, which partially led to his firing in the first place.
Anyway I liked Ben and later Duke too, but I liked Kono better. I just liked that Big Hawaiian.

Ah ok, got it. Those loops look familiar. I was at Hanapepe Place and went behind the house that has those whales on the white fence on either side of its driveway. Behind the house is a small public beach with a cliff face and rocks and surf crashing against the rocks. Cool spot! I'm guessing that's where McGarrett threw that bomb over the cliff behind that house and it exploded on those rocks below.
Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Welcome Kee.
The Burning Ice today.
Was okay.
Bit dragged out and somewhat predictable.
Kinda knew it was the good ol’ doctor [spoiler alert].

Always like the McGarrett AH-HA moments.
Magnum sightings: Tommy Fujiwara as the "ice" fence and Linda Ryan as the murdered wife.

Is that a young Jackie Cooper? Yep I kinda knew he was the culprit too. Still, it was an interesting mystery episode. The thing with the "boring" of the gun barrel was pretty cool.

Holy Mackerel, not cluing in to Tommy Fujiwara is pretty bad.IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Fri Feb 05, 2021 9:19 pm Is that a young Jackie Cooper? Yep I kinda knew he was the culprit too. Still, it was an interesting mystery episode. The thing with the "boring" of the gun barrel was pretty cool.

I recognized him but didn't click with specific MPI episodes so didn't really register.
I have adjusted my post to make it appear I'm not a total braindead loser. Leave me alone. I'm 50.

Would have totally missed Linda Ryan though anyway.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
It's ok. I know you're FIFTY.
Linda Ryan always had a bit of an English accent in her performances I thought. No idea where she was born. I'm sure she lived in Hawaii because she appeared in all the Hawaii-based shows. She was in "The Big Blow" on MPI. Wasn't she the eventual culprit who wanted to knock off Robin Masters? Spoiler?
