Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?

The Cooke House was used in a third episode..
And there were TV appearances. “When we moved in, Hawai‘i Five-0 asked if they could come and film,” Cooke says. Three episodes were filmed with Jack Lord, including “Highest Castle, Deepest Grave,” which aired in 1971, “The Diamond That Nobody Stole” in 1973 and “Ring of Life” in 1975.

Ivan,
I rewatched No Bottles... No Cans... No People.
Sometimes I’m not really paying as much attention as I should and that was the case with that episode.
Still didn’t like it that much.
Sorry...
Please don’t shoot me in the femoral artery.

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

More school boy tricks, T.Q.? You just might suffer the same fate as Cookie. Now go and watch "No Bottles" a third time.

3,000 Crooked Miles to Honolulu
Great episode.
Do they even have travelers cheques anymore?
Lots of familiar faces.
Buddy Epsen was good.
Magnum sighting. Ibold again (you said he’s in a lot until he becomes a regular) and actor Tommy Fujiwara (lots of roles).

That's Ebsen. Jed Clampett, Barnaby Jones. There. Fixed it for you. Now I don't have to shoot you in the femoral artery.

Yep it's a very good episode, one I enjoy more and more. The travelers cheques scheme here always fascinated me, probably because I don't know much about them. Before my time I'm sure. But it sounds like something you would carry with you (in lieu of cash), I'm guessing like a credit card, primarily when traveling, and there was a certain amount on that cheque that you could spend up to. In any case a very good scheme. This group of criminals (all looking like wholesome mainland travelers/vacationers) just out shopping all over the islands using these stolen cheques was a pretty original and clever idea. I also really liked Tommy Fujiwara in this one - maybe my favorite of his roles on the show. He really sells the pain and sorrow when he finds out his secretary was murdered. In fact that poor girl's death somehow always affects me. We don't spend too much time with her to get to know her, yet somehow her death has a real impact. It doesn't help that her body is found in a trash bin after a long search.

But are you REALLY sure you like this one more than "No Bottles..."?

Bring up No Bottles again and I'm gonna have to sneak T.C. some laced gum and get him to 'KILL IVAN!'.IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Wed Jan 27, 2021 6:37 pm

Two Doves and Mr. Heron
Pretty decent episode.
Jack Tripper! Took me a minute to recognize him because of his voice.
Vic Morrow was good. And he was my Magnum sighting.
The homosexual angle was interesting thinking of the time period. Couldn’t get away with that these days (no I don’t want to start a debate
)
I loved seeing the old International Bazaar. Was a great place when I was a kid.
Loved Koko's line: "That's a lot of fish and poi Bruddah"

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
You're really gonna love me now, T.Q. but does that mean you like "Two Doves" more than "No Bottles"????
Honestly this one is probably one of the lesser episodes of the season. I mean it's still quite good but the season overall is so strong that even the good episodes end up at the bottom compared to others that are much better. And yes, "No Bottles" is much better!
I recall very clearly the International Marketplace in Waikiki in this episode. I can still see the image of Vic Morrow standing in front of it, looking around trying to find John Ritter. This stands out in my memory because I had just come back from Hawaii in the summer of 2008 and as soon as I got back home I ordered season 4 on DVD (I already had seasons 1-3 DVDs at that point) to get my Five-O fix.
Anyway I watched this episode and of course saw the International Marketplace, which was very fresh in my mind as I had just been there and walked all around there. Plus it was still EXACTLY the same in 1971 as I saw it in 2008. Now, having visited there again in 2018 (10 years later) it looks completely different. Sure, it's more modern but I feel sad about the loss of the original iconic look. Some things are difficult to replace - Robin's Nest being a prime example. I heard they also want to tear down the War Natatorium in Waikiki, which of course is also such an iconic image there. It doesn't matter that the pool there hasn't been used in decades, I still love it being there. Even if it's just idling. Call me sentimental. You'll see it used soon in a season 4 episode - at the end of "A Matter of Mutual Concern".

Yes.
The International Marketplace* is now a Vegas type mall.
Was sad for me.
And the news about the Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial also sad.
I’m the same with tradition.
* We have an “International Bazaar” where I live so I had another brain fart.

...And I Want Some Candy and a Gun That Shoots
Great episode with a lot of firepower.
Like the helicopter scenes. And good ol’ Danno got him in the end.
Neat ending. Did that mean it was all meant for her or he thought he did it for her?

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
Yep it's FANTASTIC!!! For a while it was my absolute favorite until an even better one came along a few episodes later. You'll get to it!

Anyway apparently this episode was deemed too violent to broadcast again (as a summer repeat, I think) so they actually sort-of "redid" this episode the following season (as "Little Girl Blue") with a new story and actors but the same premise about being holed up in a Diamond Head bunker and shooting at the cops below. I suppose that one was a little less violent (maybe?) but I didn't see a reason to do this personally. Actually I saw "Little Girl Blue" first and loved it right away!! It was later that I saw "Candy and a Gun" and realized that this one came first and actually has a harder edge to it. Michael Burns playing the sniper was a total wacko! He also played a creepy serial rapist in an episode of STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO called "Act of Duty" (one of my favorites) - I'm sure Pahonu remembers.

Yep, the ending was pretty powerful. Sounds like he had a mother fixation. All he wanted was attention from her and to be loved. But she was a real cold B.

Re: Hawaii Five-O: Any Fans?
I’m not recalling this episode at all?!?!? I must have missed it somehow. I’ve never done a start to finish run through of the series, but over the years I watched it a LOT. I’ve missed a few it seems, and some good ones. Burns’ character was totally a creeper in Act of Duty. Fred Sadoff always made an appearance as the psychologist in episodes like that one. Brenda Vaccaro was also good as the rookie cop. I want to see the H5O episode now! Is it streaming anywhere?IvanTheTerrible wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 12:25 amYep it's FANTASTIC!!! Found it for two bucks on Amazon Prime. I’ll check it out soon, I think.
