Yeah it's an episode that I initially didn't care for but it's kinda grown on me. I don't care for the whole hippie drug culture thing (though I do love that late 60's time capsule) but there's something unique about all those psychedelic effects when they're "hopped to the gills with speed" (do they say that in this episode?) and it's certainly the only time on this show that we'll see something like that. So it's kinda unique and weird at the same time. But it drives the point home about how dangerous this was, especially back in the day. I do love the cliff scenes at the beginning and the end along Kalanianaole Hwy.
Dude.

Chop chop on the Magnum watching.

Do I have to stop my Hawaii Five-0 until you pick up your Magnum viewing? :P

Johnny Wells: Limited Engagement Season 4.

Johnny Wells was lobbing a softball pitch to Ivan compared to Leon Platt.

That was a great scene with the baseball card though.
Leon Platt was a toughy.

Yes, the baseball card scene.

I really love the Limited Engagement episode. Fun.

A Sense of Debt... not so much.

Hehe!

I'm actually finishing up my rewatch of MPI season 3 whenever I find the time. Then I'll get to season 4. I promise!

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned some of the other MPI guests. "Deathwatch" had 2 of them - Nehemiah Persoff (Torah, Torah, Torah) and James Shigeta (Forty Years from Sand Island). You might also remember him (everyone does) as Mr. Takagi, the head of Nakatomi Plaza, in DIE HARD!

Oh yeah that was a great one! Very tense and Yaphet Kotto gave an Emmy-worthy gut-wrenching performance as the shell-shocked marine lance corporal. I loved how McGarrett was able to play to his hallucinations and pretend to be a part of the rescue mission at the end to end the whole standoff. Well done! You may have noticed that they filmed at the Castle Memorial Hospital (today called Adventist Health Castle) in Kailua, same hospital where they filmed MPI's "Heal Thyself" - http://magnum-mania.com/images/3_12_w_full.jpg and http://magnum-mania.com/images/3_12_n_full.jpg. I took a few pics of this place during my last visit there.
What did you think of "Deathwatch"? One of the very best. I love it more and more each time I watch it! Nehemiah Persoff and James Shigeta really nail their roles as the hoods Harry Cardonus and Joe Matsukino. You can see how disgusted McGarrett is at having to protect this creep who ordered the hit on McGarrett's friend but he has no choice because he wants to nail the bigger fish Matsukino! Fantastic episode! I love those episodes where they have to protect someone long enough so they can testify. They did a few of these.
Darn you Ivan, T.Q. etc,
You guys got me jonesing so bad for this great series I might have to go out and buy it. I just can't understand why it isn't shown more when crud like Barnaby
Jones with Buddy Ebsen sleep walking thru the title role goes on and on. I might have mentioned it somewhere on Magnum Mania before but 2 years ago when
MeTV ran Hawaii 5-0 for a few months(I hadn't seen it in 30 years) I was astounded by the quality of season one.
Simon Oakland in particular was brilliant as an WW 2 vet, it might have been the best thing he ever did.
Ivan, you mentioned James Shigeta, for my money he was one of the top character actors. When he was on a Burkes Law, whose every episode teemed with
great old actors trying to out ham each other, he stole the show. That's another reason to appreciate 5-0, all the great guest stars, big and not so big.

Hey Dobie,

Simon Oakland did guest star in the first season, playing a native Hawaiian named Benny Kalua in "Strangers in Our Own Land", but the one you're talking about where he played a crippled WWII vet (or was it Korean War vet??) was season 3's "The Reunion". I love that episode and I agree that it's his best acting on the show. You really feel for him there! He made a total of 5 appearances on the show. But I'm also reminded of his 2 appearances on BONANZA where both times he played a particularly unsettling serial killer, first in season 4's "Thunder Man" (a real highlight!!) and then in season 9's "Justice Deferred" where he plays dual roles. In both episodes he preys on women and can't control himself. Sexual assault is implied. Pretty rank stuff for a show like BONANZA. Kinda pops the balloon of those who like to dismiss BONANZA as mindless fluff, contrasting it to GUNSMOKE for instance. Who can forget Lee Marvin in full psychotic mode in the classic episode "The Crucible"? The result was Pernell Roberts giving what is no doubt the best performance of his career! It's no easy task holding your own against someone like Lee Marvin. But I digressed.... sorry :)

Hey T.Q.

That's Al Harrington! You'll see him a few more times (usually as a bad guy) before he becomes good guy and Five-O member Ben Kokua in season 5 (replacing Zulu as Kono). Yeah, "The Box" is a crackerjack of an episode - my favorite of the season! McGarrett vs. Big Chicken is the highlight for me!! The seething hatred between the 2 is really palpable!! Gavin MacLeod knocks it out of the park as Chicken (surpassing his earlier performance) - they should have given him the Emmy for this one! And I think this is probably my favorite Jack Lord performance on the show too! He absolutely despises the criminal element in tropical Hawaii. I don't think there was ever a character on TV who was more married to his job and more dedicated to eradicating crime than McGarrett!

But hey, you missed a Magnum alum in "Face of the Dragon"! :x How did you miss Michelle Hue's husband?????????????????????

Nice post, Ivan! "The Reunion", yes, just outstanding. Oakland's whistling absolutely creeped me out in "Justice Deferred".
It's silly but I never quite trusted him after that, I wanted to tell Carl Kolchak to watch it when around him as the two serial killer parts you cited come
to mind whenever I see him. Now that's acting.
I am chuffed you talked about the Lee Marvin episode! I think you are right, Pernell probably took it as a professional challenge to not just keep up but outdo
Marvin, and Lee must have felt the same way. Two pros circling each other like wolves, no quarter given and the viewers were the winners.
I am surprised nobody has started a Bonanza thread as yet on Magnum Mania. It's still a huge hit around the world.
But you are right, we digress, Conch will have Dan-o escort us out of this thread.

We're back in business, T.Q.! Thanks to good buddy Conch!

Yep, One for the Money is a great one! The first TRUE "psycho" episode of the series! There would be many more of them in the years to come. And yeah Along Came Joey was a lesser episode.

And to reward you for your Five-O viewing I have started season 4 of MPI. :D

- Home From the Sea - great episode of course. I've seen this one before a few years back.
- Luther Gillis: File #521 - Eugene Roche as Luther makes this one for me! He's the reason to watch it.
- Smaller Than Life - pretty silly but not too bad. Ok I guess. Waldo certainly had a unique looking face. But what the heck was that with the karate fight at the end? One of the most bizarre things I've seen on this show! It almost seemed like an outtake or blooper real. Too silly to be part of an actual story.
- Distant Relative - great episode! Full of emotion, excellent acting all around. I like the episodes with darker themes. Rick going Rambo mode at the end somehow works! LOL. And the iconic shot of him diving through the shack window as seen in the later season opening titles. Great heli aerials at the end too as they pursue the baddies!

Awesome.

I'm into season 2.

Watching episode 3 for work-out today. The return of Wo Fat. Oooooh. :D

P.S. Always look for actors and actresses I know. Found it funny both "Hot Lips" (from M*A*S*H movie then series) were in back-to-back episodes. Sally Kellerman and Loretta Swit.

That's great! :) The show only gets better and better! Yep, 2 back-to-back Hot Lipses (lol). Loretta Swit comes back 2 more times - in bigger roles! What did you think of the season opener "A Thousand Pardons -- You're Dead!"? It's a great episode and James Hong's death outside the Diamond Head tunnel entrance is particularly unsettling, when Harry Guardino runs circles around him in his jeep! The music score by Morton Stevens for that episode won an Emmy!

How about "To Hell with Babe Ruth"? It's widely considered to be among the very worst, if not the worst, of the entire series. I disagree that it's the very worst (that comes during the show's final season) but Mark Lenard as the confused ninja is absolutely terrible with his incessant ranting and raving and crazy jerky movements. Man, I hate every time he's on screen! I don't even care that the actor is not Japanese and that his makeup is pretty bad. It's every time that he opens his mouth I want to press the MUTE button on my remote. Uggghh!

I'll get back to MPI but for now I'm in mourning over the passing of the great Sir Sean Connery.      Will need to watch GOLDFINGER or YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE in tribute. I actually watched DR. NO not too long ago.
