For those interested, here's a 1989 thesis on Magnum-Mania's favorite TV series, The Rockford Files:
A Social Historical Exploration of the Popularity of The Rockford Files

Ok, come on, fess up now, Garwood. You wrote that dissertation.Little Garwood wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 1:39 pm For those interested, here's a 1989 thesis on Magnum-Mania's favorite TV series, The Rockford Files:

I haven't had a chance to read it yet but it looks fascinating. Well deserved for the 10th best TV show of all time!

I definitely didn't write it; she talks about The A-Team and other '80s bilge.
I would have discussed the show much in the same dryly academic way as I have in this very thread!

I don't think I like this dissertation anymore.

I got your back Garwood. The A-Team doesn’t hold up as well today as other TV series.

Re: The Rockford Files
I've read some more of the Rockford thesis, which imo is pretty poorly written. I think you, Pahonu, or even I could have put together a superior thesis with whatever angle we chose to take on The Rockford Files, a series worthy of a graduate thesis.ZelenskyTheValiant (Ivan) wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 8:06 pm80s bilge?Little Garwood wrote: ↑Sat Jul 02, 2022 7:40 pm I definitely didn't write it; she talks about The A-Team and other '80s bilge.![]()

Re: The Rockford Files
I haven’t finished the third part yet but I generally agree. It’s written in a scholarly way for a thesis so style is absent. The real problem is she only viewed 32 episodes selected fairly randomly. That’s only about a quarter, and simply not enough in my view. That said, in 1989 it was much more difficult to come by information about… well just about anything really being pre-internet, so for it’s era I think it’s reasonably thorough, if dull.Little Garwood wrote: ↑Mon Jul 04, 2022 8:18 pmI've read some more of the Rockford thesis, which imo is pretty poorly written. Backlash of the Hunter
And, believe or else, this is the first Rockford Files episode I have ever seen.
Thought it was pretty good.
Wasn’t any Don’t Eat The Snow or Cocoon though. Sorry lads.

Knocking my rubber chicken or my sloppy habits is within the rules, but you're attacking my character. I would like to think you don't mean that.

Re: The Rockford Files
And we’re off!

I’m not a huge fan of this one myself because the actor who plays Rocky isn’t’ Noah Beery Jr. He will play the role with great warmth and charm for the entire series. Lindsay Wagner is also very good in this episode and returns for another.
It’s definitely not a pilot that exploded onto the airwaves. I know MPI’s and Miami Vice’s pilots did so. I remember there was immediate buzz around them. I don’t know about the response to Cocoon, as I wasn’t around in 1968. I like that pilot but wouldn’t place it on par with the other two I mentioned.
No shoutout for MPI alum Joe Santos, Noah Beery, and Ted Gehring? I kid! No pressure. The last two actually appeared together on the MPI episode By It’s Cover.
Seriously, I’m glad you enjoyed it and there is much better to come.
Edit:
I forgot to ask, which version did you see? There’s the longer 90 minute original cut, and a syndicated version edited to fit a 60 minute slot.

There were tons on MPI alums. Just still not sure I’m doing the whole episode thing again.Pahonu wrote: ↑Wed Jul 06, 2022 11:46 pmAnd we’re off!

Saw the 90 min.
The airplane takedown was the highlight.

I think it was Stuart Margolin and Ted Gehring who were in "By Its Cover", right? Coincidentally, wasn't Margolin in this one too? Noah Beery certainly wasn't.

Agreed that the airplane takedown at the end in the desert (there we go - I love me some desert!

I'd say it's about on par with "Don't Eat the Snow" and "Cocoon".
