I don't remember seeing this episode before but it is outstanding.
The always excellent William Watson and beautiful Beth Brickell shine.
Watson is one of those actors you have seen a million times but have no idea what his name is.
I like the unusual set up of almost all the action occurring in Carol's(Brickell) apartment, just her and McGarrett and the story unfolding as the truth slowly emerges.
The ending is one of those great twist endings that Hawaii 5-0 did better than anybody.
I would also point out that once again they reused the footage of Chin at the phone company as the tech traces a phone call.
This has to be at least the third time during the last month I have seen this bit.
You Hawaii 5-0 mavens have no doubt already caught this.
Or have you? I am always hoping to find some goodie you guys haven't already noticed, maybe this time I scored!

Yep, this one had a heck of a twist at the end! That's what really makes the episode. There are some long patches of just Lord and Brickell going back and forth over her story again and again, with her becoming more agitated and unfocused as time progresses. We think she's unraveling because she's fearing for her life (love how she "sees" Watson getting closer and closer through her eyes) but as we find out at the end it's also because she killed the old man and McGarrett is finding cracks in her story. It all culminates in a great twist - maybe the best in the entire series! Of course it loses something on repeat watches because you already know the twist so all you're left with is a lot of talky scenes. But on first watch it's pretty outstanding!
And yes we have all noticed Chin tracing the phone lines being reused many times. So...

Five-O Mavens: 2
:D
What a gyp, it's back to the minors for me, facing the likes of the Gashouse Gorillas. I should have known I was out of my league playing you guys.

William Watson retired from acting in the 1980's and settled in Hawaii, and was the owner of something called Luana of Hawaii. He died at 59 in 1997.

A Very Personal Matter

Thought this one was okay. At least semi-interesting if not exciting at all.

Came together nicely at the end when you learn the same thing happened to Dr. Danworth as it did Tom and he thought he was helping.

6/10

MPI: Fritz Weaver, Cameron Mitchell, Simone Griffeth, George Groves, Tommy Fujiwara, Krash Kealoha, Don Pomes

This one is better as you get older. As a kid it was boooring. Drug overdose? Who cares. Leave that for an episode of ER. But watching it as a grown-up it's a pretty solid story, with some good performances. A serious subject matter. A very personal matter. So yeah, I don't have much to say but it's not a bad episode. McG is more personally involved here because of his friend (Cameron Mitchell) and I remember some folks were laying it on pretty hard on McG for basically declaring the doctor (Fritz Weaver) guilty without any proof. Even going so far as to say McG tried to frame the doctor because he wanted him to be guilty so badly.

Also, is this the first time where all 3 of the main guest stars also appeared on MPI???

I'm burned out.

I might do Rockford Files after this.

Was before my time and never appeared on re-runs where I grew up.

Never seen a single episode.

I’ve not actually seen an episode of Rockford Files, either...although it was on in reruns when I was growing up (can’t remember what year it went off the air...I might have been born and a toddler during its last couple seasons). I’ve always meant to check that show out! :D

When I eventually start (after H50) I'll be doing 3 episodes a week.

Should join me for the first couple weeks. Give it 6 episodes.

Oh boy, you guys make me feel like I "remember the Alamo" when it happened. Okay, so I did chuck a rock at Santa Anna once.

I envy you guys having the Rockford Files as a new experience. Beware the butchering of a key scene in the 2 hour pilot movie.
When Rockford confronts bad guy William Smith(excellent turn as a looney bad guy) in a bathroom in a seedy neighborhood, it is a tension packed, riveting scene ending in humor.
As Rockford leaves the bathroom, telling Smith,(hogtied on the floor) that he is leaving him for the local pervs to toy with, the look on Smith's face is priceless, especially as
Rockford had previously suggested Smith's swaggering was a cover for playing on the other team.
Much of this was edited out the last few times I have seen the episode.
Lindsay Wagner guest stars, I think it was the best thing she ever did. The actor playing Rockford's father was miscast, and was never seen again after the pilot aired.
I would suggest checking out Little Garwood's insights on the Rockford Files thread. I recall one, that Rockford is "better than he wants to be",
which explains the sometimes grumpy knight errant helping people out against his better judgement and protests.

The Skyline Killer

Good liked it.

Pretty risqué opening for the early 80s.

Some IMDb folks ripping this one as per. I don't get why. Can't please them now.

Serial killer on the lose, journalist and his daughter involved, blown arrest in the bar, set-up. All pretty decent entertainment.

McGarrett rockin' the 80s zebra print was cute 80s.

The buiding/crane scene at the end was pretty cool.

MPI: Walt Davis, Walter Robles, Ernest Chan

That's a good one to try next! :) Especially since it's a predecessor of sorts to MPI. I think you'll enjoy it. I liked the earlier seasons more than the later ones though. But I haven't seen the later seasons in a long time so maybe if I saw them again I would change my mind.

Without a doubt THE BEST episode of season 11 and the last truly GREAT episode of this fantastic show!! I probably haven't used the word "great" or "classic" to describe an episode since season 9, which I consider to be the last GREAT season. Having said that, this is a GREAT episode! My favorite episode from season 10 was "Tsunami" but I'm not sure I could call that one great. At least not on the same level of greatness as this one. It's also one that I have a long-standing memory of. Probably one of my earliest memories of the show. All the crane action at the end always gave me the willies! Obviously all that was second-unit work and in fact you will note that the director of this episode was Beau Van Den Ecker, the stunt coordinator (and sometime actor) on the show. So he was the perfect man to direct this more action/stunt oriented episode. The guy doing all the hair-raising stunts up on the crane at the end was Five-O stuntman Chuck Couch. Good on him! That was some scary stuff - especially where he seemingly loses his footing and ends up hanging upside down off the crane! :o I read somewhere that there was some kind of knee/leg brace placed on that crane where he was able to insert his leg into and then just swing upside down from it. You couldn't pay me enough to do something like that!! You can see Danno's shocked reaction to that part.

Anyway it was a very suspenseful episode. A psycho climbing tall buildings and murdering young women. As you say, the opening shower scene was pretty risqué for late 70s (you said early 80s). The creepy score by Dick DeBenedictis (his 3rd and last) was outstanding!!! Also I hope you took note that Charles Cioffi's (the journalist) daughter was Mrs. Tom Hanks herself - Rita Wilson!

Don't pay attention to the yahoos on IMDB who diss this episode. There's no hope for them. At this point they will knock every episode. Or they will praise something dull like "Small Potatoes" which is inexplicable to me.

Also I really think this episode should have been the series finale! Would have been an excellent high (no pun intended) to go out on. There's even some kind of finality about the final shot of Jack Lord standing on top of the crane (or building) looking out towards Diamond Head as the Five-O theme swells and the camera pans over to Diamond Head and then freeze frames. Perfect finale!

Thought we were into the 80s already this season.

Guess season 12 was 1980?
