Season 2 Episode 10

#46 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

This episode is based on a novel written by scifi/mystery author Howard Browne. It's a little darker than usual. Rick's ex-girlfriend is on her 2nd marriage to a drunk and she's having an affair. She is unfairly arrested for the murder of her husband on some pretty thin speculative hearsay from the next door neighbor. Janet has to intervene to put her daughter into the Simons' care. Meanwhile, Rick and AJ get mixed up with an organized crime syndicate as well as the FBI. They really shoot it out in this one with AJ getting a gunshot wound to the arm and at one point the brothers start thinking they might not make it out of this one. All in all a good episode.

Season 2 Episode 11 Murder Between the Lines

#47 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Oh no, a mostly dream episode! That said, it's actually pretty entertaining. The revelation that the next person to die in the book is a YOUNG p.i. is greatly disturbing to A.J.! Good guest starring roles of the diabolical author and his creepy housekeeper. Overall, not a bad episode

Key Supporting Characters: 3 Janet, Cecilia, Myron

Rick's Hats: 1
A.J. Playing Sports: 0

Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 3 Lot of good back-and-forth about Rick taking off while A.J. works the case, Rick not worrying about A.J. being the next target, and A.J. getting the check written to him

Season 2: Episode 13/14 Pirate's Key

#51 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

A strong double episode that is the series pilot overlayed with a current hearing to revoke the Simons license. We learn a ton of backstory in this one: AJ and Janet's relationship, AJ working with Myron, the brothers in Florida, etc. Janet has a big role in this and she is a strong character. Myron has a good scene in the hearing. This leaves me wondering what might have been if these characters remained on the show. Tons to like in the story and action in this one.

I remember watching this one as a kid and it stuck with me and really takes things to a greater depth. In my view, this is one of the best episodes of the series.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 1 Eddie Albert (Witch Mt)
Key Supporting Characters: 2 Janet, Myron
Contacts: 0.5 "Spud" an off-camera Rick referrel contact
Rick's Hats: 4 1 worn cowboy hat, 1 cowboy hat, 1 worn captain's hat, 1 captain's hat
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 1 A.J. as restaurant valet
Gadgets: 1 hidden camera
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 1 thief/murderer with rifle exchanging fire w/ both Simons, he's killed by IRS from chopper
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0 although they nearly escape a boat explosion
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 1 Rick wants AJ's help, but not initially a cut of $
Total: 11.5

Season 2: Episode 15 The Club Murder Vacation

#54 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Cecilia Simon is at a Club Meade destination and she (along with Rick driving AJ crazy while trying to read a Michener book) entices AJ to join her. AJ's inquisitive nature gets in the way of r&r as he photographs the disposal of a body and tries to get a do-nothing sheriff to take some action. Ultimately Rick joins the investigation at first doubting AJ's imagination, but is brought in full throttle when he meets the wife of the deceased. There are some funny moments with Cecilia's suitor witnessing AJ brandishing a gun, returning from an all-night stakeout, and the Simons along with there corner friend, Jerry, performing a crash autopsy in the room. This one plays out a bit predictability, but its definitely a character building episode for all the Simons.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 2 Guy Stockwell (notable musical, film, and TV actor) and Greg Sierra (Barney Miller det.)
Key Supporting Characters: 1 Cecilia
Contacts: 1 Jerry Reiner, coroner (again)
Rick's Hats: 1
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 0
Gadgets: 0
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 1 sheriff fires gun in final melee
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 0 (but Rick's antics drive AJ crazy while trying to read his book)
Total: 6.0

Season 2: Episode 16 It's Only A Game

#55 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Jerry Reiner, the Simons' coroner friend, is back and he drops off a package containing a video game with a hidden secret that needs to be delivered to Vegas. Some hitmen shoot up AJ's bedroom and eventually capture Rick. Meanwhile, AJ falls quickly for a US spy. In a good closing scene, on location at Hoover dam, the Simons with help from the agent and Jerry prevail. AJ considers sending one of Rick's captors on a permanent vacation . This was a fast-moving episode with a lot of action, gunplay, espionage, and Vegas scenes. A good one.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 0 You can make an argument for Tricia O'Neil, but I had to look her up
Key Supporting Characters: 0.5 AJ talks to Janet on the phone, but she is off-screen
Contacts: 1 Jerry Reiner, coroner (again -- second consecutive episode)
Rick's Hats: 2 camo and cowboy
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 0 (although Jerrry and the lady spy wear costumes)
Gadgets: 0 (but A.J. does hide the a military micro chip in a good spot)
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 3 goons shoot up AJ's bedroom, a Vegas dummy with an automatic weapon and the goons exchange fire, more shots fired by the agent in final scene
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0 (Rick is roughed up pretty good while captured)
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 1 Rick is blasting music and cutting wood on AJ's designer sheets in the middle of the night!

Season 2 Episode 17 Design for Killing

#56 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

Another dark episode. This one is set in the fashion industry including multiple betrayals, theft, infidelity, and murder. Some funny moments between the Simons and the modeling agency's chief secretary:
To both:
"Neither one of you are really the Tom Selleck type though are you? Oh well, you’ll have to do."
To: A.J.
"You’ll be perfect for our post-preppy collection. We may have to cut your hair a bit, though."
To: Rick
"Uhhh. Huhhh. I really didn’t want the Country & Western look. Where did you get that hat? It’s absolutely Neanderthal."
YInteresting scene where Rick just can't shoot a guy, even though he'd be within his rights to do so. Also, the Simons have a good moment of outsmarting the thieves -- leading their client to call them both "brilliant".

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 0 Tons of recognizable TV stars, but nobody I'd consider famous
Key Supporting Characters: 0 Seems like the writing was on the wall at this point for Janet and Myron
Contacts: 0
Rick's Hats: 1 cowboy
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 0
Gadgets: 0
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 0 Rick draws a gun, but decides to fight rather than fire
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0 (Rick is roughed up a little bit in a fight w/ an ex-Mr. Universe)
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 0
Total: 1.0 (lowest score ever, but still a decent episode)

Season 2 Episode 18 The List

#57 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

A controversial publicist is killed before publishing of his annual 10 sexiest women of San Diego piece. The Simons' client who was to be included on the list is the #1 suspect and A.J. falls for her fast. Rick isn't sold and the brothers have some friction in this one. We also see Janet for the first time since Pirate's Key and find out she's on the list! The Simons, led by Rick, conduct a brisk investigation enduring encounters with a tawdry photographer and some sinister socialites. Another pretty good episode.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 1 Tons of recognizable TV stars again, I'll give a nod to Richard Anderson for his roles in 6 Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman (not to mention Fields of Glory)
Key Supporting Characters:1 Janet (made the list!)
Contacts: 2 Rick's offscreen contacts include Lynetta (centerfold) and a woman at the phone company
Rick's Hats: 1 cowboy
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 2 AJ as judge's clerk (again) and Rick as undercover agent Boyer (again)

Season 2 Episode 19 What's in a Gnome

#58 Post by Magnum Simon P.I. »

A Vietnam vet is sabotaging a theme park before its grand opening in order to expose its owner a corrupt ex-marine who rationalized taking out some marines via friendly fire. Rick is emotionally tied to this one and we learn just a little more about him Vietnam service, A.J.'s involvement in protesting the war from college, and the brothers' tension over the war. Great shoot out scenes and pursuit under an old wooden roller coaster. A top echelon episode for sure.

Famous Guest Stars (To Me): 1 Ed Lauter I'll give him a nod for his role in Longest Yard and an honorable mention for the hard-nose naval officer role in the Magnum X-Mas special (tons more TV actors many of which also appeared in Magnum)
Key Supporting Characters:0
Contacts: 1 Rick's disabled military researcher/historian
Rick's Hats: 2 cowboy, Marine dress uniform
A.J. Playing Sports: 0
Disguises [actual costumes, not just personas]: 2 AJ as park maintenance, Rick as a park gnome mascot (some funny scenes)
Gadgets: 0
Gun Play [shots actually fired]: 2 the "phantom" takes a ton of shots at Rick and AJ, but he's not trying to hit, the Colonel's men put the Simons and the phantom under heavy fire
Body Count [killed by Simons]: 0
Bullet Wounds [taken by Simons]: 0
Simon South of the Border Trips: 0
Brothers Squabbles: 2 Some emotional conflicts between Rick and AJ on Vietnam -- Rick is very tough on AJ's role as a "campus warrior"
Total: 10.0
