OK, so with these quotes from the article:

"Even guest star Chuck Mangione isn't immune to the mania."

"Although this week he has finished one Magnum episode with [Carol] Burnett, started another with Leslie Uggams."

It looks like we're in early shooting on Paradise Blues.

When we throw in this info:

"Shooting at a beach location, he ambles over to the roped-off onlookers and lets them snap close-up photos. With his hands snug in beige shorts, the obligatory Detroit Tigers baseball cap and the distinctive saunter, he is the essence of nonchalance."

...can anyone do some investigating and get a screen cap of the scene the reporter is sitting on the sidelines of?

Also, I noted this quote:

"He changes his shirt in the parking lot, slides into his sports car, and goes back to work."

Another quote from the story:

He must have picked up a sports car after the Jeep was totaled.

They went off the top of a three-story parking garage! And lived!?!?

I recall that happening back in the day, but was not clear on the circumstances. Wow! I am glad they both got thru it okay.

Wow, what a great article! All kinds of interesting nuggets of information. The big guy earned 50K an episode! Peanuts compared to what the Seinfeld and Friends cast made, but still, a nice chunk of change!

I guess that's what can happen when you let a 15 year old (probably 14 at the time) take the wheel. I wonder what happened? Maybe it was backed into a spot and he threw it in reverse and floored it. Sounds pretty crazy!

I can't even imagine how that could happen. Every top level of a parking garage that I've ever seen is surrounded by a 3-4 foot wall. How did the car plow through, or over, the wall? Or are there top floors of parking garages that don't have a wall? That would be a pretty darn dangerous design if you ask me!

I think it happened at the Outrigger Canoe Club?

You can see from Google Streetview that the top floor of the carpark has a rather frail looking fence around it rather than a wall. It's likely in the 1980s this was an even lower barrier that was easily broken through by a teenager at the wheel of a Jeep!

You're right Dan. That does make it easier to visualize and imagine how it could happen.

By the way, I found the scene(s) from Paradise Blues that Scot Haller (the People magazine interviewer) was able to sit in on. Both are at the KKC beach bar.

Here's the description again:

The first takes place with the guys chatting at a table on the beach just before Magnum and TC get in a rumble with the bad guys who are looking for Alexis Carter.



The second takes place just after the rumble when Magnum asks Rick to trace a gun one of the bad guys dropped.



These are the only beach scenes from the episode where TS is in beige shorts and Tigers cap. Although the two scenes are separate, they were undoubtedly shot at the same time.

In related news, I looked up Scot Haller on the 'net and it seems he died at the age of 35 in 1990. That would have been a pretty big interview for a 29 year old writer.

A jeep could easily plow through a chain link fence. It must have a been a case of having the jeep in the wrong gear (i.e. 1st instead of reverse!). God, that must have been absolutely terrifying for both of them!
