I've been watching since '80 and I just noticed this.

In the opening credits when TM pulls up in the Ferrari and looks at the camera after removing the targa top he peals out onto the road. As he's entering the road a car is coming in the opposite direction and you can see Selleck look to his left quickly as the car goes by and then looks back straight ahead. 28 years of watching the show and I just now noticed this. Amazing.

I'm confused, too. Are you saying that there shouldn't have been an oncoming car, and it's a good thing TS happened to see it?

No, I'm saying I never noticed the car coming at all in that sequence.

Here it is, 0:16 - 0:20 of the opening.

I just never noticed that other car before, I was always looking at the 308 tearing up the grass.

Okay, so I had to watch the opening clip 3 (yes, 3) times to even see the other car

Coops, what can I say, you've got good eyes!! :)

Of course, for 28 years, all I have been looking at is the 308!

LMAO, "good eyes"! Meanwhile, 28 years later...

Speaking of cars on a road, in A Novel Connection, when TM is leaving the hotel the first time after intentionally knocking on the wrong door looking for Amy, he pulls onto the road and sits there for a few seconds looking in the rear view mirror at the hired gunman. He is in the right hand lane, yet you can see another car pass him on the right. That car would have had to be on the dirt and would have had to hit a light pole in order to have passed him. That scene must have been shot somewhere else other than that road.

One of my customers is a stunt man & stunt driver for movies and TV shows. He said in most feature films all of the roads are blocked off and any vehicle you see is part of the production. I know this cannot be true for MPI because there were just too many cars on the roads and the budget for the show was not that big.

I'm not sure I see what you are talking about in the opening but I will continue to study it. I cannot believe they would film while regular traffice is that close to the star, however. Maybe its another flub.

It's much, much easier to see on the DVD than it is on the youtube clip.

Since I'm already posting screen caps I'll post a few more here, if that's cool.

Car passes in the opposite direction (left side of the road)...

A second or less after that Magnum looks to his left. I have noticed this before but I've never been sure if Magnum looks to the left because of the car passing or to make sure a car isn't coming at him in the right lane. I'd guess the latter. Even though the crew must have stopped the cars coming from behind in the right lane, it's a natural reflex reaction to look and see if it's clear. And if he didn't look we might think he's a poor driver. :)

I'm wondering though why the license plate isn't Robin 1. Were there no vanity plates for the cars in the first episodes?

Yup, that is exactly it! It's also from the pilot episode so no Robin 1 license plate at that time. Thanks for the screenies!

That's what I was thinking. It's a natural reflex to look to look to your left(for right side of the road driving) when pulling out onto a road.

When I was there I totally forgot to get a photo of that spot across from the entrance to the Estate:( I'm making a list next time of all these little things.

Yesterday night I rewatched this little scene several times - my husband sat next to me like a living questionmark!! I tried to explain, but now he is sure I am crazed completely :D He said, yes there is a car passing by, haven`t you noticed before?!

Yes, IF the road is open and traffic will be on it. Like others I assumed the road would be closed for filming and if you notice Tom doesn't look left until the car passes and when he does look left he's already well into the power slide. There's no reason for the other car to be there during the filming. I think the other car really surprised him.

I think you're probably right on that actually now looking at it closely.
