How does Magnum originally get the job working at Robin's Nest as head of security? How did he get hooked up with Robin Masters?

Somehow, either Magnum contacts Robin, or Robin contacts Magnum (more likely) to run security checks on the estate, and part of the bargain is that he gets to live there rent free, for an unlimited amount of time.

It's never REALLY explained outside the first episode and is really only mentioned when Higgins and Magnum get into some sort of argument.

Know its not much of an answer, but its pretty much all we've got to answer it.

somewhere somehow during the 8 seasons you are also lead to believe that at a post war period of Higgins life he is enticed by Mr Masters to work and live on the estate as well... although neither of the two would admit it this parallel in their lives....

I still hold onto the idea that Thomas helped Robin in some way and Robin is repaying a debt.

That's what makes the Higgins/Robin thing such a problem storyline to me. I was watching "The Big Blow" the other night and in the end Thomas and Robin are standing together (Robin in shadows, of course) confronting the would be killer.

Thomas and Robin know each other. I think Thomas may actually be playing with Higgins the whole time he brings up that Higgins is Robin and Robin is an actor.

Conch Rep,

TM knows there is a person named Robin. His question to Higgins is whether Higgins really owns everything and uses 'Robin" as a shield to deflect publicity. In other words, TM believes that Robin is an actor hired by Higgins to play a role. Higgins is the real writer and owner of the estate.

It would be quite an elaborate charade but I suppose a Brit might go to such lengths to protect one's privacy (British pronunciation assumed).

I hope this helps.

Speaking of Robin Masters, I have always wondered if a writer of "pulp novels" would aquire the kind of wealth that Robin Masters had. The Estate was supposedly 200 acres, plus he had expensive properties all over the globe and a private jet. Do writers make that kind of money????

The lady who wrote the Harry Potter series has made a mint. The authors of the Left Behind series made more money than the GDP of many small countries. Rick Warren made a fortune from Purpose Driven.

Yea, writers of pulp and other material can make boocoos of bucks.

It seemed to me that Robin wasted a great deal of his money. I wonder how long he would have manitained his wealth if that situation had been real.

Luther, out...

So many times I have watched an episiode and thought there was no way Higgins could have been Robin Masters. Then in others, the thought enters the mind that maybe he could. Wouldnt it have been nice in Resolutions 2, if we could have found out for sure?!

Television writers purposely write in that manner, so we will do the very thing we are doing now! (Talking about it!) My husband has taken many screenwriting courses, written a few movie scripts. (Submitted a few and sold none!!)

Yes, the final episode was indeed left as a guessing game! IN my heart of hearts I like to believe that Higgins was Robin Masters!

You bet they can. Take Danielle Steele for example. This woman used to date convicts before she turned her experiences into novels.

I tend to agree with ConchRepublican that Magnum and Robin crossed paths somehow, most likely by chance, and that Magnum pulled Robin's bacon out of the fire and Robin not only feels indebted to Magnum, but also recognizes Magnum's skill as a private investigator, ex-Navy Seal, ex-intelligence officer and what an asset Magnum could be to him in various endeavors including estate securtity, rescuing damsels from distress (Italian Ice), etc.

As I have mentioned before the "Big Blow" (mentioned by CR) is one of the episodes along with "J. Digger Doyle," "Birdman of Budapest" and "Squeeze Play" which I think really negates the possibility of Higgins being Robin Masters for a variety of reasons. One such reason is that after Candice attempts to shoot Robin, she reveals that her hatred for Robin goes back to 1957. In 1957, Higgins was still in the British Army, and it would have been unlikely that he would have been in the position to hire an actor to portray Robin Masters. Another reason is that Higgins was not even aware Robin was at the estate. Only Magnum knew. If Higgins was really Robin Masters, he would have obviously known this. Candice's hatred for Robin going back to 1957 is inconsistent with what Buzz Benoit says to Robin while they are playing poker in Beverly Hills in "Squeeze Play." When Robin asks Buzz to give him a break, Buzz says something like "I did give you a break 22 years ago when I was the first one to publish one of your stories in my magazine." 22 years before would have been in 1961, four years after Candice's hatred for Robin began.

Thanks for laying out in detail what my little voice was telling me. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I knew it was out there.

Also in [/i]The Treasure of Kalaniopu'u Magnum mentions escorting Robin around the island scouting locations for the novel.

Guys,

There are two schools of thought around the Higgins/Robin thing. One says there was no real Robin Masters; it was all Higgins. The other says that there was a real Robin but he was an actor hired to play a part in order for Higgns to live in obscurity or 'privacy' (with a British pronunciation).

The first is easy to debunk. There were several occurances like the ones IH mentioned where TM and others are with 'Robin". The second is much more plausible but still a little too hard for me to believe. Higgins did all of the writing and used Robin's name. This guy named Robin flew around the world wasting Higgins' money living like a playboy all so Higgins would not be hounded by press in Hawaii.

I don't buy it but I suppose it's possible...I prefer to think that Robin did all of the writing and hired Higgins and Magnum to oversee his stuff.

The fun of it all is that we can disagree and come to our own conclusions without hurting anyone else's MPI fantasy...

Cheers!
